A couple months back, when I'd just started 40k, I played against a marines player who was running dreadnought swarm. He was drop podding them all in. The last time I was there, it was before blood angels came out, and they had the codex on display. He let me put together a sanguinary guard, so he's forever in my favor. I drive the extra 20 miles to go to that store now.
hmm...I know that guy...met him while that crew was between stores at my local GW. Frankly I think he was one of the worst red shirts I've ever run across. I could give multiple specific incidents that really grated on me about him, but ultimatly I think it was mostly personality conflict. I stopped going to that games workshop for about 3 months until they opened up their new store.

My worst experience is their store hours. They are never open. We used to have 2 people staffed there at all times now there is only 1 dude running the store. GW cut way back on people. It stinks! How can one dude handle the gaming going on, the painting (and academy) the register and the Q and A coming from noobs?! I went today at 1 during lunch and they don't open till 3? I was going to drop like 100 bucks but when they were closed went to Game stop and bought 100 worth of games my kids wanted. Good day for them, bad day for dad.

My GW is pretty awesome. My only disappointment was when it moved form the close mall (5 minute drive) to down to another mall which is about 40 minutes but hey, I am lucky enough to have two in a close radius. The one I go to in springfield, the manager is really cool. He lets you used custom models on one condition, they have to look good.

He plays runescape, so I think he is under 18. (Which doesn't mean you should be any more lenient.)

The answer to that should be self evident!
Personally I can't understand this "he was a jerk so I stole from him lol" mentality, surely if the guy really was that bad it's better to be the better person and do the right thing.
I guess the whole point of this being a hobby which generates a sense of fair play and community has been lost on the "Dawn of War generation", who seem to think that it's OK to be rude and ill mannered towards other players.

I just want to say, this thread has put me off ever going into a games-workshop store and playing strangers.
I'll stick to just playing my brother and his friends.
My regular is Warhammer World, so I don't have any bad stories~ amazing terrain, always free tables, Bugmans next door~ literally perfect. The only two negatives are they have no craters anywhere, so we always have a small trauma with vehicle wrecks, and the staff never remember who I am and so ask me the same questions every time I am in there, neither are particularly troublesome though! ^^

A new store opened up fairly close to where I used to live - I called to sign my wife up for a league, and the owner denied me permission to participate. He said, "I've heard about you - you're too competitive and I don't want you beating up on my players and scaring them away from the hobby."

Wow that sucks. Being denied entry due to... wanting to win? I understand different aspects of the hobby but it's still a league (and they usually want to win no?).

Don't be put off by it, if a thread is of all the bad in FLGSs and GWs, of course some horror stories are going to pop up.
There is a thread about the good, though it isn't as flashy and what not.
----------------
Samus_Aran, if I were to shoot you in the thigh, and wait a week, would it be O.K.?
@Dashofpepper, they knew you played competitively, so they wouldn't let your wife play?
Did you announce yourself over the phone as "Hello! Dashofpepper here!..."? I wonder how you got it through to him that you were Dashofpepper, not Justin~. I personally would have just said "my wife wants to sign up... [rest of conversation]"... That might be the problem right there.

My local GW is the Glen burnie Battle bunker in Maryland USA. The manager on duty that day was I can't say his name but he is marrying a co worker he got a job for. Very creepy very weird. That’s a story for another day. My club was starting a Blood bowl league allot of fun. I've never played before and I mainly play armies that aren’t played that much, so I started Ogres. <---- "If this football team is played allot please don't rip my head off I don't know".
I haven't even decided on this team yet but I said “I think I'm going to convert and paint my own ogre team” you know take some pride in it. Once he heard me say this he got me, a box of knoblars a box of bulls black primer and glue. About 150 dollars in product a real : cheese: dick if you ask me.
Needless to say he is a really big : bleep:Hat of a guy who killed the bunker, and now he killed another one in Memphis What a winner. I could go on and on about this guy and so could pretty much anyone who knows him.
Wait, this is bad? He offered you a solution... I don't think he physically forced you to buy the stuff, did he? It's a bit "aggressive salesmanship", but it's not like he said you were a horrible painter and should die or something. He just... tried to help you.
I'm assuming the guy did some other annoying things, but this example doesn't sound that bad unless there's something I'm missing.

Tell him you're just trying to increase sales. Remind him about your open challenge to buy a battleforce for anyone who beats you! Every time you play at his shop is a chance he might sell a Battleforce.
See? YOu just gotta spin it right. : )
@Balance
I think you missed the point.
The employee heard him say he was going to play Ogres, so he went and grabbed $15o in product off of the shelves that he had no idea whether scooter wanted or not. He was trying to force a sale...

I have a new 'worst experience' GW story to add to the heap. After driving 90 minutes to Chiba city to go pick up some black primer and a magazine in English, I find the GW CLOSED FOREVER. This happened about a month ago. Now, if I want to go to a GW, I have to drag my a$$ into Tokyo and lug all my junk through Tokyo Station, which is a mission in itself. Driving into Megacity One is not an option in my whale of a car.
Whatever. Maelstrom is cheaper and it comes right to the door. Yellow Submarine in Chiba has some GW stuff, but they never have primer.

I personaly get tired of gamers who dont wash ever, it drives me mad. We also have a little kid who insists on picking up every model you are playing with or painting. Last time he did that it was a good job i had some super glue remover in my tool box as he stuck himself to my Forgeworld Marcharius. The staff member then had a go at me for using non GW producsts in the store, i told him it was either that or the kid go off to a and e and i loose my tank and who knows what the kids parents would do.
I seem to have gained the ability to block out annoying WAAG shouts and the general bad music they play. I hate to admit to it but if im painting i will have my MP3 player on so i cant hear it.
We also have one ex staff member who likes to bend every rule to the maximum and no one wants to play him but he cant work out why.

The only gw store I had gone too was the one in woodbridge, va years ago when I was stationed at fort belvoir, VA. The were rude, and down right nasty. Never went back.
The second was playing a gt best general winner in the late 90s at fayetteville, nc in his store. The man through a fit when my smurf marines destroyed all of his rhinos and land raiders on turn one with lucky lascannon shots. He yeld, screamed, threw his dice and said that I was cheating. I packed my stuff up and left the store. As I was getting in my car he came out of the store yelling that there was no way a novice could beat him, that I was banned from the store and he would call the cops on me if I returned.
The third was playing in a 500 point tourny. They would allow people to show up four hours late to play and say that it would reflect bad on my score if I didn't play even though I had already played three games already. Then when I played the guy he was still playing 4th edition even though 5th had been out for a year. I game that should have taken 45 minutes took 2 hours because he argued and screamed about every roll and move it made. Curbed stomped his army in four turns but never played a tourny in that store again.
The last was when I just got into fow. I wanted to learn the rules and the store owner hooked me up with a vet player. Well instead of showing me how to play he just said over abd over "look at how much better my army is".
I hate playing at most stores because the owners are to scared to police the because they are barely hold onto their profit margains anyways.

I think I would shut up equally if he took a permanent vacation from dakka.
Though seriously, you stole from someone who cheated slightly...
You stole a model he probably put multiple hours into to paint...
And you called him a d-bag over the internet. Internet tough guy!
Over 40,000... you stole... a model... from someone who played something (probably correctly) and you steal from him... steal from him...?
I don't get it...

How about this: we'll stop bitching when you return the model to its rightful owner, confess completely, and then beg like the dog you are for the owner not to permenantly ban you from his store.

Sadly GW dont do a Super Glue remover and its becoming harder and harder to find in the UK so it was lucky i had some on me. Its not the first time ive unstuck kids from models, the previous store staff didnt mind and where actualy greatfull i had some on me.
