I like it, very simple colour scheme with some cool details (love that green on his back)
never really liked the look of Nids, but these are very cool, subtle yet awesome

I'm really pleased with how these turned out, I think your choices of very understated colours have paid dividends and your patterning on the carapace was a good decision as it added a point of interest and contrast to large areas of plain colour.

Very proud of you.

He probably has, but :
- What he said is true ;
- What he said is a proof to the overall world of Dakka that he loves her ;
- What he said is a reminder to the overall world of Dakka that Mrs.Stompa DOES relate to MeanGreenStompa ;
- What he said bumped her thread, so helped people see her good job on those, thus garnering more comments!

That's four good reasons, no?

Enough talk on MGS, let's focus on the matter at hand.

If these are really first-time paintjobs (and not first-time decent-enough-to-be-posted), these are really amazing!!!

The colour choice is quite unusual, focused on a purpl-ish tones camaieu, with nice contrasts between the light & dark ones.
The use of washes can be improved of course, but helps shading the minis in a simple manner.
On the other hand, the small, brownish "dots" on the back add a great & efficient way to make the models stand out.

I can still see some tiny mould lines if I'm on a nitpicking mood, but far less noticeable than from more experienced hobbyists...

Maybe, Mrs. Stompa, if you could add a few lines about why you chose those colours, or what led you to the brown dots, it'd give a few things to comment on!

A promising start!!

the names not give it away?

anyways, very nice start, bit of practise to neaten it up a bit and they're even nicer. Not sure on the colours, but thats just personal preference, can see why you chose it, just doesn't float my boat. Bravo to you on a fine job anyhow.

I'd like to see the same flecks on the little fella too, though maybe only near his head and neck instead of all the way along his back.

Very nice look there though.

I like the colours chosen, not a colour combo I've seen much for Tyranids, almost seem albino, but in a sinister way.

Would be interesting to see a big fella with this scheme, a Carni or Tyragon.

Also, damn thats impressive for your first figs, your eye for detail is very good for a beginner.

Lookin goodo Mrs.Stompa, especially for your first go! I think as a next step you will find an overall wash with very thinned brown/purple will really making things pop.

Thanks for the comments! MGS will tell you, I was a little hesitant to post these - I didn't want him to get a ribbing for his Mrs.'s shoddy paintmanship!

@ Yggdrasil These are indeed my first. The spotty fellow is the fourth figure I've done. I painted a genestealer as well and another of the little guys with a gun, but after looking at the closeup pictures I thought "Wow. I missed a whole lot there...we'll skip that one."

Anyhow, the images come across as a little purple/bluish but they aren't intended to be - I'm just lame with a camera. The look I was going for is a very organic looking, "old rended flesh and bone" feel with sinewy bits here and there. The skin is just a stone colored undercoat with Devlan mud wash and the armor/carapace parts are done in bone with a bit of the wash. I just thought it would be interesting to go with a color scheme that wasn't as contrasted between the carapace and skin parts. The spotted pattern I just thought would be something good to make it more interesting and organic for the eye to look at.

And yes - I noticed the mold lines after I started painting!

@ Morathi's Darkest Sin I love the sinister albino idea. I have a Trygon but he'll be the last thing I paint - the very idea of it is terrifying to me at this point.

I like them! Very unique paint scheme, but definitely great work on the back armor of the one. The little "patches" of brown really give it some depth. I will second the wash of purple (or maybe Baal Red?) though, if you could do it on the flesh parts, it would really enhance the whole model, otherwise definitely great stuff!

Nice scheme you;ve got going on there, very creepy, maybe even a bit zombie like, and a new direction for nids painting that I would like to see more of. Wouldnt ever have guessed it was a first attempt either.

I actually think the purple/bluish tint would work with the colors you've got going on. It achieves an albinoism effect, but it also gives an 'alien' feeling.
On to the models themselves!
I'm not sure what color primer you used for these guys, but I'd suggest if you're going to do a lighter tone like this to go with a grey or white primer coat. It adds a bit of 'warmth' to the model's colors, and what's more if that 'warmth' feels too overpowering, it will be effectively balanced out by the wash of Devlan Mud/Badab Black that you'll use later when doing an overall wash of the model proper.

The speckles on the Warrior's carapace are a good idea, but they look too...'regular', if that makes sense. It, to my eyes at least, looks like it's been painted on to the carapace as an afterthought rather than a natural part of the critter.
If you have any, I'd suggest something like a needle or the stick from a small lollipop. Put a watered down bit of brown on there, and apply it while the carapace is still wet with paint. The two colors will blend together and give a far more 'natural' appearance.

Other than the speckles(which may just be bothering to me as a personal thing or just be looking bad because of the camera angle), they do look good for a series of first attempts. There's a learning curve involved with painting, and with Tyranids it can be slightly unforgiving if you're doing them in lighter shades, simply due to the slightest misstep being readily visible on the models.

And yes - I noticed the mold lines after I started painting!

That's when you will, without fail, always notice them.

One thing that I've found helpful (in regards to moldlines at least) is I do a heavily watered down wash on every model I'm working on before I actually prime. It accomplishes two things:
1) It shows me if there's any moldlines I missed, meaning I don't have to carve up the primer coat.
2) It also lets you know, prior to actually starting to paint, how the washes will pool up on the model once you actually do start painting.

@ Morathi's Darkest Sin I love the sinister albino idea. I have a Trygon but he'll be the last thing I paint - the very idea of it is terrifying to me at this point.

With a big enough brush--nothing is terrifying!

One thing you'll want to have handy for that big guy is a few of the spongey bits you get from blister packs. They work wonderfully for ensuring that washes spread out well over large surfaces.

Very nice ! reminds me of a snow leopard..
i would sugest useing some black lineing on the joins of the carapice just to make them seem a bit more solid ,

also it mite be usefull to use a torn up sponge to add the dapples on the carapice as it will give a nice random effect..

look forward to seeing more

Ok here is my attempt number 5. I changed my approach on this little guy after watching some paitning video. I just undercoated him white and used a devlan mud wash for the skin rather than pigment painting. I think it turned out ok, but man. Close up photos are so unforgiving and flaw revealing..i still have miles to go on steadying my hand it seems.

PS, I suck at photography.

I wouldn't worry too much about those 'close-up flaws'.

One thing that will help in the photos is get some black cloth or backdrop the white is making your color fade a little.
