They seem to be okay when I just do http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/user/profile/20079.page <---that, but when I do Gorechild <---that it brings up the error.

Any ideas why this might be happening? I'm certain I'm doing it right ( [ url = www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/user/profile/20079.page [ / url ] Gorechild [ / url ] (without the spaces)) and I've been able to do this in the past, but now its just swearing at me each time I do it :(

You have an extra {/URL} tag in there.

Format should be:

{url=http://www.google.com} Google {/url}

Like that (with square brackets instead of curly)

Your example should read:

[ url = http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/user/profile/20079.page ] Gorechild [ / url ]

Edit: It seems you have to put the http:// in as well otherwsie it isn't recognised as a valid URL
