Hello everyone.
I can't say i am new to the game as i tried to pick it up several times over the past few years. But I am guilty of putting it away for almost 2 years now.
I am new to this site though. And i do have a big project that i want to undertake. I am still in the process of deciding which army i will start with.
My choice has now been narrowed down to:
- Tau
- Necrons
- Imperial guard
- Witch hunters
And my project is going to consist of me building up my army to 5,000 points. (painted and ready to go) And i hope to do it in 5 months. By end of August i suppose.
Thanks.

I suggest then you go IG. They are powerhouse army if used correctly and similar to humanity. You can have great fun with them. Personally Im a Tau guy but I think you would get a better use out of IG. Necrons are hard to use these days and win unless you keep to set lists (or are a skilled player) and WH are expensive. EDIT: I forgot to say hi and welcome.

Welcome!
You've picked three extremely uncompetitive codexes, and one competitive one (depending on what you build out of it), so there's honestly no choice but to answer IG.

Thank you.
Actually I hope cost is not going to be an issue. As I have been putting away some money for my 40k Fund.
Besides I am building the army to fairly slowly at first. But your points definitely make sense.
Thanks again.

Hey, Welcome to Dakka!
I voted IG because the other three have pretty poor books. Athough if you realistically want 5000 points made and painted in that time necrons would be most easy to do

Welcome to Dakka! Paint scheme-wise, Necrons would probably be the easiest to set up as they're almost monotone.
But for play, I'd have to say IG as well! The cool Tau suits are all on forgeworld and pretty pricey.
Whichever you pick, you're sure to get a lot of inspiration from this place- lots of Tau, IG, and a few notables ramping up with the GK release. Necrons... not sure. Seen a few to be sure.

I personally have started Tau as my second army and am really enjoying them as they are great for painting and modelling, however I am yet to play a game with them competitively so I'm not sure how they would do in a battle.

Dont judge them till you have had a few battles under your belt. My Tau are not afraid or orks, blood ravens or tyranids...when they really should be. It is just the people I play I guess.

Thank you so much for this very warm welcome.
I have actually gone to GW today after work to get some inspiration. I have talked with the guys there about my grand scheme plan as well. The obvious choice they recommended was IG or Tau.
So i've decided to start picking out items in the store to get my army started. But then a whole bunch of players came in (Duh! Thursdays are 40k nights). So i watched a few games with different armies. And thats when it hit me IG lists require enormous number of models painted.
That definitely makes my goal almost impossible as it is very hard for me to find large chunks of time to complete these big sized squads. Slightly disappointed, but not yet defeated. Thats when I moved over to check out some Tau. And they have really cool looking infantry as well as transport and tanks. But then the battle suits that everyone so much recommended in the store, really did not appeal to me. Necrons appeared to be very limited with the model variety as well. Thats when i turned to the army that I very much started the whole thing years back. Wichhunters. Actually i saw one of the guys play with his sisters army, and that reminded me my own hidden somewhere in the boxes (my army is no army at all just a few models i stared painting and never completed).
Now what caught my eye with this army is the detail he put into painting his models. Each individual looked amazing. And then when he played all these Faith point tricks that he had up his sleeve. So sneaky but yet so heroic. LOL. I think my heart now lies with Sisters.
Again i do thank everyone for their feedback. And I am not really overlooking your suggestions, as I will start one of the other armies when i finish this one.
So I am typing this as i am dusting off a few models that i had in the past and am sitting here trying to come up with a first list. (so that i can get right models.)

Well, I'd stick with Tau
I started with them and have had some decent luck the past couple years
Plus, most of my friend play Marines or Chaos Marines, so those Crisis Plasma rifles and railguns really put a hurt on them
Really, the best tip for Tau, in my opinion, is deploying and being as flexible as possible since they're not the toughest army

As sumone who has just started as well i run a c:sm chapter of white scars but i know people who run both and have played against IG.
IG can be very tough with all the tanks and artillery.
From wat i've heard is tau are dangerous at range as my friend bragged after picking up a new rail gun for his tau. however tau cant do much in close combat
also to save you money GW is really over priced, id suggest looking at getting model from the war store or the broken forge

Hi, welcome to Dakka.
I'd suggest IG since they have a pretty solid codex and unlike necrons and Witch Hunters, probably aren't going to change anytime soon.
Tau could also work, but they are more difficult to master. And might be harder to start with. You will however learn more of a tactical game with them.

Hello everyone again and thank you for your support again.
I have now began my challenge: Road to Inquisitor Purgatus of the Witch Hunters (Sisters of Battle)
Chose an army, although not the one that has been suggested here, but definitely for good reasons. It was chosen purely by its looks and now I am on my 1st week of 25 to completing this challenge.
Wish me good luck and join me in it if you like.

Best of luck with your project, my friend. I would have suggested Necrons just because the point cost per model is high and so you would reach 5000 faster. They are hard to play with now, but they are bound to come out with a new and better Dex SOON.
Witchhunters I can't comment on since I know little about them. But if this is your inspiration, you must go with it! Tau and Guard are low-point cost and would each require MANY models.
If you love playing, one last bit of advice. Try to play games with your army as you finish units. Eg: once you hit 500 points painted, try to play some games with it! Have fun with it! For me, this inspires me to paint MOAR. And you will learn early if you have chosen well based on your enjoyment of the game and your army. It may also give you hints re: what to add to your army next.
I will keep an eye on your progress. If you post any pics of the army as it is coming along, please consider PMing me because I'd love to see.
Good luck!

IG are the most powerful of the bunch, but if you want a 5k force fully painted, it's a no-no unless you take lots of tanks and veteran squads instead of platoons.
sisters are decent once you get used to them, and they have the advantage of lots of detail. This also comes with a disadvantage- they chip, break easier and are harder to glue.
tau aren't that good in my experience, but are good for models and rumour has it that C:Tau is in the pipeline. Just speculation, though. They also have a lot of leeway in terms of paint schemes.
necrons are good to paint and collect quick, but very limited options and rules.

I'm tempted to recommend WH just because they're cool and almost no one I play with plays them so they seem foreign and exciting to me. But people are telling the truth when they say it may be a tough first army to play. And I'm always scared they're just one step away from being unsupported...
A tip for your 5000 goal. Awesome, bold. Just make sure you focus on getting a playable force first. Even if it's just your first 1000 or 1500. If you can't play once in a while with what you have while you're working on the rest, you may end up getting burnt out or feeling like it's an impossible goal.

Thank you again for all the warm support.
I have now finally completed my "first model" and now have posted the result in the discussion section of the article.
Although I am pleased with the result I just realized that the model that I painted is not part of the list that I put up.
So she is done strictly for show and i still have completed 0pts of my army.
But at least i know how the colors will look. (oh and i learned that some of my paints dried out after 2 years. must re-stalk soon.
