Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

Hey folks!

So I have a 40k room at home. Two folding tables come together to make a 6x4 table with 6" of clearance marked off with electrical tape at either end - a handy area for you to put your army pre-deployment. I have a Zuzzy Mat (rollable 6x4 terrain board) that goes into the middle, handily covering up the depression between the two tables. There's a chair at either end of the table, a bookshelf to the side with all my WIPs, a closet full of army cases and cardboard boxes full of 40k model boxes that I haven't done anything with yet....

Three steps down the hallway is a clean bathroom that doesn't smell like 50 gamers took a leak on the floor and wiped their boogers on the wall with toilet paper that isn't made out of single-ply recycled newspaper. Through the living room and into the kitchen is a fridge full of Sprite, some sugar-free Cherry Kool-Aid look-alike, a bottle of Jagermeister, one of Tequila, and one of Seagram's 7 (for the Sprite of course), not to mention being stocked full of food.

Tomorrow, a friend of mine is coming over to get an introduction to 40k - the models, how to move and shoot and play them; he's an artist in real life, so I'll probably need to show him my airbrushed battlewagon, the paint collection, talk about painting too....

He'll follow me home from work, come in, and we'll go to the back of the house to my 40k room and stay there for a couple hours, then my wife and I will take him out to dinner, we'll have a sociable evening, and that'll be the night.

So here I sit at 11:09 PM, sweaty and tired because I've had to spend the evening cleaning the house. My nearest FLGS is two hours away, but I'm pretty sure that I would rather have driven it on a weekday night than have spent my evening cleaning the house for a guest whose focus is a single room. Anyone else with a wife who shades your nerdy obsession with her own requirements?

I can definitely relate to that. I have the RoB table which is pretty handy. I used to play all over the place, on the living room floor, on the dining room table. My wife finally got sick of it and gave me sole ownership of our shared office on the condition that I don't leave any of my 40k stuff lying around the house. Let's just say I got the better end of that deal . I went out and bought to 2.5x6 folding tables which I'm sure are very similar to yours. I find it to be a very enjoyable game, when I have the opportunity to play...

The major downside to playing 40k at home is that of the friends I have, only a couple ever play 40k, and only one regularly. Pretty much if my one friend who plays regularly doesn't feel like playing for 3 months, then I don't play for 3 months. It's a pain in the arsenal if you ask me. I have a FLGS closer to my house than you do, but I don't really like starting a game with people I haven't met. My army isn't fully painted, and I still proxy some stuff, and I don't want to get any flack for that.

Ehh it's my wifes fault really, I orginally stuck to the office to paint, then she started painting her Necrons in the living room. Slowly my entire guard force ended up out there, covering the table, the pony wall and even making it's way to the kitchen (I was stripping models, honest )she finally had to crack down on "the spread" but it does make it a PITA when I have folks come over to game as I gotta clear off the paint and what not.

And I feel ya on having to clean the house first, I have a German Shepard and Welsh Corgi, both are shedding, it's like a furacolypse in my home right now... as soon as I talk to the old lady into it, going to be buying a busted up Pooltable from cracklist to turn into a gaming board and sticking it in the garage... once I clean the garage.

You think you've got it bad I've had to move my stuff out of our office so my wife could turn it into a third bedroom (with a z-bed of all things) and a room for drying clothes.

All my moddeling stuff is currently at my Nans house in a make shift work room in the loft until I can refit our concrete shed into a workroom. This I can unfortuanatly see very quickly turning into a utility room! As my plans for the refit keep getting changed because the wife "dosn't want to to stay in this house longer than 5 years" and she can't see that doing it up as a general work room will add value the the house .

You should have lived in Orlando.

I havent had much of that problem since the closest FLGS is 15-20 min drive. It sucks your closest store is a 2 hour drive. My GF requires Sundays and Mondays together and lets the rest of the week for me to do whatever I feel like. So usually sunday events are a no-go for me.

I hear your pain completely. I have a similair set up to you, in that i have fold away tables and battlemats with terrain etc. Don't get me wrong, my buddies dont trash the place, but in order to get the tables out, I have to re-arrange most of the living room to do it. THen after everyone leaves, I have to fold away the tables, move the living room back to where it was, clean up 2000 beer cans, hoover, wash any dishes that have been used....

It's a pain. But as much of a pain as it is, I still prefer being at home, as i'm much more comfortable gaming at home, than in the shop with kids with sticky fingers. Plus we can do Jaegerbombs when Mephiston gets killed!

In order to talk me into buying our house, my wife gave me complete control of the basement which includes a bar. I have a 4'x8' table set up down there permanently. She also built me a 6'x10' table topper from wood to use for big games (her hobbies include carpentry and home improvement). I'm very lucky she supports my hobby.

I only ever game at home or at a friends since a bad experience at my local GW where in which a child shoved my open army case onto the floor then ran away crying.

I'm lucky that I only game with the same 4 people and I have a dedicated room that is just for warhammer. I don't have to worry about it being a mess (the ony stuff that gets left around is mini's) because its my room just for that purpose.

I could play a game at my house, but no one ever visits my home. I have a few buddies who have tables set up at their houses. The best benefit of playing at home is the terrain possibilities. They will not let me build terrain like this at the store:

I seem to be in the same boat as a lot of you guys. I just recently purchased a new home. The basement was given total control to me, so naturaly I turned it into a game room. So now I have this huge basement, with a TV, Couch, Loveseat, Chairs, 2 8x4 game tables, a painting area, shelves lined around the room to display miniatures, a giant bookshelf to house all of our codexes / rulebooks / gaming crap (We call it the black library), and a painting area, but alas....I have noone to enjoy it with.

I got 1 buddy who is really into 40K with me, and there are a couple other guys in the area who play, but for the most part it is like pulling teeth to get anyone in this area into miniature wargaming.

Probably work

Playing at home is awesome. My roommate and I have the "game room" that we use for painting, 40k, and D&D. We've got a table I made from 3/4" thick OSB, 2'x4's, and metal brackets. We can play and abruptly walk away to smoke or cook some food. We don't need to worry about forgetting anything and having to buy it at the store/drive home to get it. The minifridge for beer is nice as well. It's really convenient.

Cleanup (before and after) is a pain though. My friends have an unfortunate knack for making quite a mess afterwards, and then there is always the post-game terrain/mat teardown, which is generally rough on a worknight.

From my point of view (single life), having an entire room dedicated to "little action figures" is somewhat of a, shall we say, conversational roadblock. There's really no good way to brace a prospective mate for the nerd room.

As I think I've mentioned before, the last time I experienced the latter downside was when an old (female) friend of mine came back with me from a wedding. She had drank too much and was getting, well, lets call it "interested", during the car ride. When we got back to my place, she wandered around the apartment, and happened to look in the nerd room. I got a very awkward and embarrassing, "Oh my God Brad, what have you done?"

Needless to say, it kind of killed things. Oh well, such is life. :(

I've got two 8x4 tables in my basement, one of which is on coasters so they can join together for bigger games. There's a keg of beer in a refrigerator, shelving for the 80k points of dudes, a couple of glass display cases, and forgeworld posters on the walls (the ones that come with the ia books).

So yeah, I got a gaming room

But my wife is a geek too, she has an army, and a bloodbowl team, and likes playing from time to time. And because it's all in the basement, she doesn't feel like it takes over the house - she can have her non-geeky friends drop by whenever and not have to worry about toys on the floor.

I think that's the key, really. Most women are tolerant of whatever their men want to do, as long as it doesn't take over all their space. My mom, 40 years later, still complains about how my dad rebuilt the engine to a car on the kitchen table...

See, this is the approach is what I was thinking. Im getting married in june, and while my wife tolerates my gaming interest, I don't think she would appreciate me going out 4 or 5 times a month to play the game. Im trying to get her involved, and she loves arts and crafts, she's even helped me paint some models before. So i was thinking of getting a home thing going as well.

Sometimes I feel bad about it, I don't mean to nerd her out all the time, and sometimes she rolls her eyes (well, everytime she does). But she is a gem, so she always plays along and tries to support it anyway.

I am also lucky enough to have a gaming room. I have a walk-out basement with two 8x4 gaming tables and a bathroom. This last is an absolute luxury. During the summer, we can open the doorwall and wheel the gaming table right out to the deck. Gaming outside is kinda weird (er, all that fresh air and stuff...), but we usually BBQ as well.

Two gaming tables are awesome if you can swing it. We've never had two games going at once though. Most of the time the second table is full of folks who'd rather paint and BS than game.

I am also very thankful that I have a dedicated group of gaming friends who, when invited into my home, treat my stuff with as much care as I could hope for. This is the most important piece of any gaming room imho.

My husband got me into the hobby, so that helps.

We also bought a house with a living room withenough "free" space to have at least 1 full 6x4 table set up, and we can add another width ways if we need a larger surface.

Yeah, I feel for ya.

In many places in the States basements are non-existent as well. Luckily, I grew up in the mid-west where I think they're a bit more common.

My basement in particular is a walk-out which really isn't a basement at all. More like a 'lower level'. Hard to explain I guess by a person who thinks of basements as rather dark cement or cinder block walled caves which is what I grew up with.

There are "finished" and "unfinished" basements. I would say most people here are talking about a "finished" basement which means its really just another room in the house that you walk downstairs to. It can also be referred to as a "Man Cave".

My wife gets frustrated at how long games take and how loud me and my opponent can get. I am forced to box all models up when not playing a game and that means I can't really own any models I can't sore easily so that limits my Monstrous creatures for my Tyranids. Compared to how she used to be it has gotten a lot better, lol.

When my brother split up with his ex, I got the six foot long extendable table that was going to be thrown.

My two mdf boards sit on it nicely, although look an awful sickly pale green compared to my painted and flocked terrain.

Due to the fact I, Aurelia and the eldest game, its not really an issue. I have a mate round several times a year, but it just requires setting up the table to full size and slapping the boards down.

I would like a dedicated gaming room mind, and totally agree with the lack of basements in the UK.

It must be more than just not bothering though, as I live in a US constructed flat (part of the defense personal housing.) On a former US airforce base and still none of them or even the former homes of officers have them.

They are the biggest rooms I've ever seen mind. My old one bed flat in Cornwall would almost fit into the living room of this one.

Same Arizona has ground that is far to hard for basements. I did find one place, but it was built in the 40's. Was an amazing place but they were wanting way to much for a place that would have needed another $40k USD in upgrades, ohh and was surrounded by tweakers. Just not worth it.

I did get one of the spare bedrooms all to my self, but turned it into a workshop/reloading area for my guns, I think the garage will be fine with a bit of work though, just ungodly hot during the summer.
