I just want to know. It seems that people are always giving the Ultramarines crap.

Because they're the Ultramarines! The bestest bluest marines that all the decent chapters want to aspire to. It just makes me feel ill.

They are the poster boys...
That and Matt Ward has made them into some kind of Daddy chapter that is in charge of all the other ones because their primarch was Guilliman.

I dislike them for three reasons, *starts rant *

1) They are bland, boring, goody goody two-shoes with no personality, flaws or flavor.

2) They think they're better then everyone else.

3) They get everything!!

They don't get the Stormraven...

To be truthful, I actually like them. Can't say that they are my favorite, but they rank up there.

THough not all smurfs are bad theres one good one, Uriel Ventris he is the only good smurf.

I have to agree, Uriel and Pasanius are the only UM I like thanks to Graham Mcneill

My loathing of the ultra's comes mainly from Guilleman, and his attitude towards my favorite legion -the alpha legion- who came up with way better tactics than he did during the great crusade and as soon as this was pointed out, Guilleman points to his legions records and says ha we're better than you, even though the alpha legion and alpharius had been going for a relatively short period of time.

I like Ultramarines, the only chapter that halted an entire Tyranid invasion...
But most people here like BT, and BT don't like very much Ultramarines as it can be seen by using codex Astartes as toilet paper.
People are just jealous at Ultramarines being so successful, just as Tau-fanboys are jealous at Imperium...

Besides, what is M.W. done to be hated by everyone?

Have you been paying attention to anything Matt Ward has done?
And also people aren't jealous of the Ultramarines they dislike them because according to the codex everyone wants to be like them.

They're horrible Mary Sues who are both a shade of blue that makes the eyes bleed to witness it and grossly incompetent despite all the praise lauded upon them. Calgar bungled the defense of Macragge, his marines fled into holes in the ground to die to no point, he led the naval assets under his command into a trap, got saved by the Imperial Navy at the last second, and returned to Macragge to mop up the remnants of the Tyranids, who'd been routed by the conventional forces after his meddling influence was removed. And then Calgar is credited with a victory he did everything in his power to prevent.

Nothing is wrong with Ultramarines. Sure, some of their fluff is...let's say exagerated, but other chapter's aren't better. At least they don't life in unhealthy relationships with canines or are still emo because their primarch got strangled by Horus ( or have an abomination like Draigo... )

I jut dislike a single chapter is seen as the greatest of all the Space Marines despite just being another Chapter out of 1,000.

I don't mind them, but the way they stand as the "greatest of them all" irks me, since they aren't special, they just had a primarch who, instead of fighting and dying, came up with some rules that really benefited a Legion at full strength, but not so much one who'd been fighting in the heresy. For example, Legions like the Imperial Fists and the Blood Angels lost a lot in the last battles, so splitting their survivors up into Chapters hurt them more than a Legion like the Ultramarines, who were at high strength.

The Roman motif is too awesome for people to deal with.

Stuff like this is more exaggerated than the fluff.

But the reason I don't like Ultramarines is because, like previously stated, they think they are the best. Hell, I hear all the time some gibberish about how space marines are the there to be the right hand of the emperor and will defend the universe from aliens and chaos, BUT the best among the space marines are the Ultramarines. It's stuff like that that really grinds my gears.

Their plot armor is kinda annoying.

Being "knights" of the imperium automatically makes them right in whatever case they get involved in.
Basically every other chapter is flawed in some way that makes them easier to identify with, or their so fanatical that they seem completely mad.
Ultras are bland to the extreme. even their politics (read fall of damnos) are so painfully boring that they made my eyes bleed.

But on the lighter side they are the ultimate authority figures. They have never been on the wrong side of anything. Just like the paladin that kicks down doors in the dungeon they are allways beyond morals, beyond reason, because they are simply right. This makes for a one sided chapter that are heroes, thereby appealing to those that get confused by shades of grey and want the "good guys".

So it seems that the biggest reason is that "they are in the Hall of Fame" or something like that. Well, what if the Ultramarines and Blood Angles switched places? As in completely. I am going to guess that you will come up with some derogatory name for them, complain about their bright red colors, and complain about their chapter master. And then you will go on to say that the Ultramarines are better in every way. Like "unlike those BA guys, Ultramarines are blue, and they have a way cooler chapter master".

In my local community, the Ultramarine haters are usually individuals who conform to the idea that they should be non-conformist and fight against anything popular (both in reality and in-universe.)

Honestly, 40k needs a chapters like the Ultramarines from a literary point of view because the contrast they provide helps make Space Wolves, Blood Angels, and other chapters more distinct.

You mean like how everyone calls them emos, twilight-marines, vampires, bloody Mcbloodbood, golden bat-nipples, and so on? How people insinuate SW have relationships with wolves? And how much these terms irritate me?

If you can back it up with the fluff, sure, I'm down for saying their bad-ass, but so many Chapters do so many equally heroic and valorous deeds that saying "they're the top dogs because they are" doesn't make sense. A chapter with the tragic hero archetype, or a flaw that doesn't always make them the shining knights, would make a better Chapter, as they are more alive and less beyond reproach, and rarely are the Ultramarines looked at by the Inquisition under any suspicious light.

But, the fact that they are really "The Template Space Marine", the most basic one that can most easily be described as a super-soldier in space with little supporting backstory, that's what makes them dull. Other Chapters have their own personality and distinct ideals/presentation (Dark Angels are secretive and hunt their Fallen brethren, Back Templars are valorous, yet zealous crusaders, SW are fierce Viking-influenced warriors, BA are the tragic declining chapter), and these flesh the Chapters out more and make them more likable. They also have with them, alongside their own stories, the characteristics of the UM, that of the super-soldier in space. So now the only trait of the UM is shared by other Chapters who have more fleshed out backstories and more interesting problems.

@Dshrike, very true, there are many who feel that way, I can understand the need for the template in order to make other distinct, but the fact that there are more distinct Chapters makes it harder to enjoy the UM.
