Disbeliever of the Greater Good

Hey everybody,

I'm relatively new to Warhammer 40k (and all of GW for that matter). I started off with Tau as my first army. Their cool and all, but I've only played a few casual games against some Orks. So, questions.

1. How do Tau tend to fare against Marines? Eldar? Nids? Etc.?

2. As I've never been to a tournament, I just need a bit of clarification before I go. Now, I know each store has a different policy on this, but what is the general rule for WYSIWYG?

Any feedback is appreciated.

First of all, welcome aboard!

1. The Tau are middle ground competitive, at best. Certain units have very obvious flaws. Some wargear/weapons/units are designed as counters/enhancers for rules that no longer exist. All in all, Tau players are pretty anxious for a new book, but a cunning Tau player can make do fairly well with what they currently have.

2. WYSUWYG is required at nearly all tournaments.

Hello!

Welcome to Dakka Dakka!

1. I think with the right unit selections you can fare pretty good against those opponents. I think keeping your distance is key.

2. Most tournaments follow it I believe. Personally I haven't played in one that does. But I think generally you have to have the specific gear mentioned except for things that might be default or understood like grenades.

EDIT:

I currently play Tau as my army and I'm finding my Infantry Spam is not something that will work too well. I think Railheads are a must.
