hello to everyone on this site just new here been collecting warhammer for a while but never really got into it properly until now, i would like to get all the back knowledge on it ie the heresy and painting tips as my skills are not great so far, if anyone want to stop by say hello and just chat in general about it ll would be great, thanks J.Coops

Hey  Welcome to Dakka! For all of the fluff on the horus heresy I suggest checking out Lexicanum. For the painting tips, you won't find many better places than the painting and modeling section here on Dakka!

Chaos was my first army and I still have a special place in my heart for them, I really dislike their current book though. Recently I've really taken to Dark Eldar. What armies do you play?

i have always been into space wolves as the wolf is my favourite animal it seem a logical choice lol, but also got into imperial guard, dark angels, i have some chaos black legion, i used to buy this all when i was small not really knowing what i was buying now really want to build my armies properly. Some of the artwork here is amazing. Dark eldar i was reading a bit of the back story very cool stuff

For fluff, you can always ask questions on the 40k background section, or go to lexicanum, as for painting, the painting and modeling section is the best the internet has to offer

Welcome! I'm pretty new to modern wargaming too - only started collecting 40k in December 2010 - and I've found that in most cases the guys and girls who run and/or hang out at your friendly local gaming store can be VERY helpful.
Personally, if you're looking to play (for example) Space Marines or Chaos Space Marines, I'd highly suggest getting the 5th Ed Rulebook before you do anything else. Read it, decide if you want to be loyalist (Space Marine, Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Black Templars, etc) or Renegade (Chaos Space Marines)
THEN start looking at the codex you want. Picking up fluff on the 'net is great, but the stuff in hard copy you by from GW is the real canon of the game's storylines, so it's definitely better to start there. Again, this is just my opinion though.
