What's wrong with someone making a really unique model that doesn't look like Games Workshop designed it?

As mentioned, If I did something as awesome as some of the conversions here, I'd want people to think "Wow, that person really took the time and effort going out of their way to create something like this".

No, but thanks for trying to put words in my mouth. If you read it again, you'll see that I said it's best when they're GOOD enough to have come from a kit. That is, professional quality. I never said anything about Games Workshop, or any other miniatures company. It sounds to me like we're really agreeing here.

i agree with the baron, but i think when everyone says subtle, i think they mean something that looks realistic enough to be from the 40k world.. like that DKoK Ork, looks like a 40k ork, not like OMG ORK WITH GREENSTUFF COAT!!

I find that unless I've built one myself, I don't notice good, non-extreme, conversions. Things like better cloaks or loin cloths, weapon or arm swaps, leg position changes, etc. when done properly and painted look like they're SUPPOSED to be that way. It's not until you go over the top, or use a part that's recognisable to me from another kit, that I realize unique model is unique.

While i know we are trying to stay on topic, I just thought I'd chime in my two cents... I am personally on the side of the subtle, non-obvious conversions when I can pull them off...

No offense, but where is the fun in that? To me conversions are to make unigue models that stand out.
I convert alot. most of my gallery is conversions.

Its different to talk about a model rather than to argue about what someone said about it.
I dont mind derailed threads, however, so long as they come back at some point (which they usually do). You get the occasional that actually gets better too

Well the reason I joined Dakka Dakka was because of this tread, so I might as well contribute. This is my Swarmlord conversion. I have had him done since the release of the 5th ed. nid book, but I have never taken any pictures of him until now. This is by far my best conversion.

I love this conversion, but the black parts look sort of incomplete as far as paint job.

It looks a lot nicer in person. It is a shiny adamantine black. Also I used my phone camera, which isn't the greatest. Also because i field him a lot the paint on his swords chips or rubs off a little bit.

Some recent work of mine

Took the Succubus model from WoW and carefully cut her legs and rear off. Lots of green stuff later and some purple paint, the results, still need to give her a sword though.

And here we have a few My Little Pony blood crushers, still a WIP though.
