I need more daemon auxiliaries, and Nurgle is far from cost efficient. Until something caught my eye: River Trolls and a herd of Skinks. With a little greenstuff, I save over 200 bucks. Only one question remains; are River Trolls big enough to be Great Unclean Ones?

no, but with enough work, you could probably get away with it if you used all three to make some form of horrible fish-man-blob-creature. good luck to you, it sounds like a great idea

Nowhere near, unfortunately.

I can't do much to make them taller, short of (pun!) drastic cutting and repositioning. However, I the sprues are ideally set-up to make them fatter. A lot fatter. Like an inch of green stuff between each piece, and even then they'll retain their shape. Could that work, or will I need to start cutting?

if you're nervous about height, put him on a raised feature base, thats what I did
but besides, he's still a large target so even if you can't see the model at eye level, the rules say you can so...don't think anyone would really care (its not like 40k with true line of sight)

(Actually I am planning to use them for 40k...)

I was planning on that originally too, but ended up going with the Hell Pit Abomination route

Not really cheaper :( but turned out pretty cool.. would definitely love to see the River Trolls conversion if you do it though!!!

Here's 30 minutes with MS Paint. The green lines are green stuff, the black are kit. The legs will be curled back and he'll be laying on his fat. He should end up half an inch taller, and an inch wider.

I see what you are getting at, i think you could get away with it, You could even just use alot of Greenstuff and have him sitting/lying on a huge distended roll of fat.
you could also have him sitting on some sort of floating or wheeled platorm too if you are worried about the height.

I intend to do both.

A good friend of mine used a River Troll for his Swarmlord.
Legs and arms are elongated and the body is widened too.
