Hi guys,

So a couple of months ago I decided to take a plunge and buy a few materials, tools and start having a go at modelling. I started way back when I was 11 but I gave it up around age 14. I am now 23 and I have a lot more patience than I ever did back then, so I thought I'd get back into it as a hobby.

I kicked started that with a diorama.

I am pretty pleased with the results, but I'll let you guys be the judge.

If you want to see more pictures or a "making of" please see my blog at: http://www.gearboxfilms.co.uk/rustyrobot

For those that have PM'ed asking, I have now put up a "Subscribe" button on my blog at the bottom. Thanks!

Thanks!

I'm pleased with your results! This is a stunning piece with lots of atmosphere.

I like the use of the more proportioned marine. The pulse rifle looks like it could be a standard weapon for sentinel pilots if all goes horribly wrong.

I'm particularly fond of this shot from your blog.

Very nice.

Very nice. I'd almost be tempted to say you've not used the space, but the fact it *is* empty really gives it a desolate, slightly chilling feel. Excellent composition.

Thank you so much. Your comments are awesome. I spent a great deal of time trying to find a pilot that would suit and, like you, fell in love with the gun and it's connotations. Your thought of "if it all goes horribly wrong" is exactly what I thought too.

It came out a little grittier than I originally planned in my mind's eye, but I like that fact it did. Glad you do too. Thanks!

Really chuffed you got this. I read Stutcinkas' Forgeworld "Model Masterclass Vol 1" a lot. He mentions to never have dead space in a diorama, that at every part should be something pleasing to the eye so I was a little... anxious, if you like... if I could convincingly use the dead space in the exact way you perceived it. So, thanks. Mission accomplished!

Thanks! I'm feeling the love right now.

I spent a long time on the weathering, it really pulled the whole piece together. Thanks for your awesome comments. The model is from Hasslefree Miniatures, an independant company here in the UK. It's called "Ken (C)" - the "C" part being the version. It really is a great model - a great company too.

I watched "Saving Private Ryan" when I was making it. I think the drabness seeped into the design.

It could just be me seeing things but I love your attention to detail regarding the subtle sentinel footprints!

You really captured a lost, desolate feel to the diorama. Just looking at it makes me want to hear the story behind it and know how it ends. Very well done.

I'm really glad people are digging the atmosphere. It's a character I put a lot of effort into.

I love that , thanks. I considered for a while about the scope of the piece. I wanted to make it grand, but I don't have a lot of experience so I didn't want to punch above my weight. I made a aesthetic compromise, but this makes me happy that said compromise was successful.

A perfect review for a diorama. Thank you

I kind of reminds me of the stories you'd hear about Vietnam and the soldiers having to go into these tunnel systems to try and extricate the North Vietnamese hidden within. Apparently it was horrific duty... crawling through the pitch blackness never knowing if the next step would be in to a booby-trap or an enemy soldier's sights...

Absolutely. I'm still to watch the Uwe Boll film about that. Tunnel Rats, if I recall.

Don't fear the dark. Fear those that lurk within it.

The marine's "on guard" posture is what sold the model for me. Glad it's working for you too.

Man, that's how it all started for me. Go for it. Get some paper, roughly sketch out an idea and take the plunge! Would love to see your results.

Thanks alarmingrick. I really appreciate that. The ominous bunker/mine does beg the question of what lurks inside.

Really good, the detail on it is excellent. When I first read the subject matter I thought "Oh no! The poor Dude has lost his first ever diorama!" glad to be pleasantly suprised.

Very cool diorama.

Great painting and modeling.

I like that it's got suspense and narrative in equal measure.
