Here is WIP of the first section of the Realm of Battle Board I am painting for myself. I wanted to create a Winter Tundra more like a glacier than a snowy board. I will later add snow flock to the board, and also fill in the skull pits with resin tinted for ice. I had just washed the skull pit with Ogryn Flesh, still need to highlight them when its dry. I like the warm feeling they counter with the coolness of the board. C&C always welcome.



*Note* LOL. I do plan to cover the skulls with either resin or snow. I have not decided which yet lol.

Fill in the skulls with clay, make a pool of cold water. Will fit the thing better + easier to put models on. (I did it, never looked back.)

Amazing paint job thus far. I cannot wait to see the completed board.
Any chance on a break down of how you achieved the look of the ice?

Yeah I will work that out, tomorrow.. Right now I should get some sleep seeing I have a physics test in the morning lol.. It was really easy though..

Yeah it does look really good.

Bit torn on the skullz though, on one hand they add some different colour on the other hand they're skullz...... flipping thousands of them.....in a glacier?

But hey, it's a RoB board so no biggie. Good work mate.

If it were me, I would do as suggested above; smooth over the skulls with putty and then use some water effects to make like a 'frozen pond' type effect.

I plan on doing the frozen pond in them, but it will be almost totally opaque, with the color only slightly showing through. So have no fear about the skulls haunting my miniatures..

You could put some crushed glass and water effect over the top of the skulls? Would make it look like wet snow with just 'something' underneath...... ooh spooky

The way the realm of battle board makes the whole landscape appear to be filled with skulls just under the top soil does ruin the whole thing in my eye's. I know GW love skulls but that really does push it a bit far.

Covering the skulls and making it look like Ice pool would be advised.

Looking great by the way. The full 6"x4" will look fantastic I'm sure.

Got 2 more tiles done today. 3 more to go, then its adding snow flock and sealing. Will post pics here soon.

I love the overall look of your board, but will you be making some other snow/glacier themed terrain to use on it?

I currently have still on sprue a full city of death buildings. Plus I plan on making some of plateau pieces to block LOS and give some more dimension to the board.

But do you have any plans to make them 'Glacier' themed? Or will they just be regular pieces of terrain?

They will be glacier themed, along with the cities of death buildings will be wind blown with snow. Should be nice..

Wow, the tiles look amazing. It's a really inventive use of the Realm Of Battle board - I would have done it just as a rocky wasteland. Good thinking on the frozen pools as well.

Really good ice-glow effect, nice use of colours, well done mate.

I only stuck with grass because of most peoples bases I would be fighting on it and it adds a little grip on the slopes! Sick of marines racing down the hill on their arses!!!!

I totally understand about the issue with the figs moving around, but I am still going to add snow flock to give ti a grip.

Looks really good, but I agree with other people about the skulls, they look wrong.

Even some snow and ice effect on them would improve things for me.

The skulls only look wrong the way they are. Too exposed. Glaze them over with a frosted sheen of ice and you have a near perfect set.

Nice looking board. I think the skulls will look awesome once highlighted and resin added. Good work.

Couldn't you just make the skulls so they were under a patch of clear ice and just visible so it is like Im that scene of lotr where Frodo sam and golem are crossing the marsh wit the bodies in it. It would be an interesting poin for speculationas to why the whole battle field is covered in skulls under the snow. Maybe stick inan ancient ruin thingy from GW and that would be like an ancient temple.

Any luck with the break down of how you've achieved the look yet? I've been wanting to do a snow/ice board for ages and would love to be able to replicate this sort of feel.

Use the resin. It'd look a lot cooler than snow..

Yep, I subscribed. I'm also waiting for the rundown. I won't be building a RoB board, but the tutorial will be useful for my own table project anyway.

Is Ruff still doing this project? I'd love to see those skull patches under a few layers of blue-tinted Vallejo Water Effect.

Yeah I am still doing it.. I had to side track it a little while I was full time in school.. I still have 2 panels to paint up, but I am in the middle of writing the tutorial for the paint..

Take your time doing it. We're not looking for a poorly written tutorial
