Lovely! Nice, subtle coloration and excellent work on the gem.

I appreciate there may be one buried in the thread somewhere, weety, but would it be possible to go through how you get your gems to look like that at some point?

Really nice eldar! It's a good choice for sliding towards Infinity too.

Which Infinity factions do you prefer? I can give you some suggestions if you'd like. Also check out the Shae-Konnit thread in the sub forum, you might find a bargain.

He is very nice although I'm not 100% on the yellow - it's a bit samey. If I had any inifinity minis, I'd send you one! However, I do have brass etch jungle foliage, and will happily send some if you want?

Thanks Dr M and gitsplitta I'll tell you how I do it. Dysartes no I don't think I ever did do a tutorial.

Well I've got no pictures but basically I use the really viscous vallejo washes I've got, Hold the model upside-down, and then delicately paint on a droplet of the wash. Then gravity does its work sending the pigment to the top of the gem and giving a nice gradual fade. After its dry I tidy it up with smaller amounts of wash, add a darker tone to the very top of the gem and then find a spot for the white dot. Simples. The Upsidedown gem wash trick.

I think I like the sound of the aleph casy's law. They have less historical baggage than the others.

inmygravenimage If you can spare a few scraps and the price of the stamp I could definitely use a sample. The competition blurb mentions jungle and although Casy's law said it was ok to do any kind of environment so long as it looks hostile I'm not taking any chances with the fickle voting public - I have plans for greenstuff venus flytraps. Plans that will probably fall apart in the attempt.

If I had anything useful I'd send you it to help out but I just have bits and chopped up sections of bodies.

If Aleph is floating your boat then your in luck, I had a look and Shae has a lot of good stuff for about £5 each. P&P is 90p so you could get two nice minis delivered pretty quickly for under a tenner.

The greenstuff flytraps sound great. I don't think I've seen your sculpts before which means you are very subtle which is impressive or it's new territory which is awesome!

I have occasionally used greenstuff for repair on old, vandalised minis and you wouldn't have noticed it then I hope - the only real sculpting I've done is on my unfinished genestealer hybrid limo (main exhibit on my shelf of shame). I think I was getting quite good but then I got distracted. Here is a few pics to jog your memory

And thanks for the tip I will go have a look at that thread.

Oh yes! Thanks for the repost, I got really inspired by that at the time, you did a great job on it!

I hope you find something that works for you with Shae, he has quite a few cool Aleph models in there, Myrmidons and Devas stood out to me, Probots too which would be nice for a diorama type thing on a slightly larger base.

The main thing is to enjoy the challenge.

I'm still not decided what to paint for the comp.

But procrastination is good for getting other things done so I dug out some necromunda figures. Next to be painted is a goliath juve who I've converted a bit. And this is obviously an orlock juve - I've included a comparison pic of the last time I painted this figure so you can see the improvement in technique.

Nice way to give two copies of the same figure very different looks weety. Amazing what a change in skin tone will do, eh?

Thanks chaps I am pleased to get some feedback on the juve.

Gits - I like to think I changed more than the skin tone! The whole light/dark balance is changed. Also I have really been trying to pull the composition of the whole model together like a painting so that its more of a display piece. Come on, get with the programme gits!!! (I'm kidding of course)

Dr H yeah I debated whether to add a little lip colour or not but then I thought t'hell with it a good juve should look like private vasquez. Gets them them the ladies. Perhaps maybe I went overboard with the lippy on second thoughts.

Cheers Casey the fabric patterns are my favourite part of the model too. A lesson learned through practice I guess, I've painted a lot of orlocks. I'm trying to get a simplified feel of the classic crip/blood bandanna pattern I see in films.

Hey vallhalla I'm glad you loved the dino rider - I wasn't quite sure about him, the colour clash between the pale blue-white dinosaur and the sepia camo armour messes with my eyes a bit.

Ah weety, you're much too knowledgeable about art for me. I just see blue jeans, green coat, grey gun... OH look, the skin is a different color! Subtlety is lost on me. My idea of light/dark balance is a Black & Tan!

I had to google Black & Tan. I'm guessing you mean the drink and not the royal Irish constabulary. I like to mix my beer with cider so I will not criticize.

I've got a wonderful idea for the contest and ordered the figures for it, but I don't think there's any chance that I'm going to be able to finish in time (with having to manage the end of my own competition). Just bad timing. Too bad, I thought I had a really cool theme idea and would have been painting wayyyyy out of my comfort zone.

... and yes, I was referring to the drink.

Red bits on guns is the distilled essence of old school isn't it.

You have a comp gits? I'm probably too late but I will check it out.

It'll be fine Casey - I may even change my mind anyway as I'm having trouble buying (bloody e-cheques and flippin paypal)

Very nice weets! I'm playing about with a load of marine bits right now to try and get something very reminiscent of 3e art out of them. I'm going to be using a very similar pallet to the Juve but even more extreme, I'm throwing realism out the window. I'm banking him for inspiration if you don't mind!

You are an artist yeh? Have you ever been in a situation where you've had to compromise your vision? I'm feeling very down and frustrated about having to 'make do' right now to get a small army on the table and could use some advice from the experienced...

compromise my vision? No we usually wear safety goggles when using the dangerous chemicals... but joking aside I suppose my entire artistic education has been a process of compromise. I've been through years of changing my ideas to get the grades and sell the work. I'm fed up with it now which is why I only paint miniatures. Because I don't actually play wargames they are just for fun and I can do whatever I like. One day maybe I will return to painting and sculpting on a larger scale, when the market is more buoyant. I don't really mind painting and sculpting to order as there is money and an ego boost if the customer is pleased. Anyway enough rambling on about that. The thing is you can't always do your best work if you are under time pressure. You have just gotta paint and be damned.

Thankyou all for looking. Infinity soon.
