Apparently they have shot it in 3D.

I don't want to watch it in 3D. I'm not interested in 3D.

Avatar gave me a headache.

Not only that, 3D is a convenient excuse for cinemas to charge an extra £10 or whatever it is on top of the ticket prices.

Does it have to be watched in 3D though?

Other 3D movies have been in 2D, and how do they expect to sell 3D only DVD's?

The 48 fps thing sounds more concerning imho.

The latest thing is to charge the same for 2D and 3D tickets, so I've heard.

What do you mean by concerning?

I'm curious about the effect it has, but I wouldn't say I'm concerned, to me that would be worry that it might cause siezures or something similar, which by all accounts it doesn't.

Nah It wont be, I had the option of 2D or 3D for the Avengers, I presume they will always give you the option, because at the end of the day our gripes seem very common. In fact it seems to me that generally, if you arent taking kids along, 3D isn't very popular with anyone over the age of 30.

I picked 2D obviously, not just because 3D was £5.60 and 2D was £3.60, but because I hate looking at it. I watched Avatar on IMAX 3D and I definitely preferred it at home on a 40" TV on Blueray. It just distracts me to the point where I find it iritating. Same goes for 3D smart phones and 3D gameboys.

I think its one step too far with technology for our primate brains! Surround sound and HD is bang on for me without gak needing to fly out the screen.

I added that quote after recalling it during a rant about work shy whiny people of my generation in another thread on Friday.

Yeah regards 3D, how old are you out of curiosity? I have a theory about it, cos it seems like younger people seem to handle the effects better. Are you the right side of 25?

I am 32 years old, in excellent physical condition (I ran 6 miles in 42:35 on a treadmill yesterday and topped it off with a set of 90 push ups ) and I left the IMAX theatre with the feeling that a tramp had been sucking my eyeballs during the interval. It made it really hard to concentrate, and at times I had to remove the glasses for a few minutes.

I guess ill just flop into my grave when I hit 35 eh?

I'd also like to point out that Avatar was filmed specifically for 3D, and I was able to see it in theaters in 2D, so I'd imagine that it'd be the same for the Hobbit.

So did I, I'm always slightly annoyed when my freinds insist that 3D is awful and if we're seeing a film it has to be in 2D, even when the film was shot in 3D (Avatar), or filmed with post-production conversion in mind (The Avengers).

I can understand complaining that "It'll be awful" if it was something that was filmed normally and then shoddily done post production after some producer suddenly thinks "oh! 3D will make more money!!" , but if it was done during production, and by all accounts, done well, stop complaining!

There are plenty of awful 3D films. It can be a great tool if it is used right to enhance a movie. Some good examples are the movie "Up" where it was used on old guys tweet jacket, making your brain really process it as having texture; The flight scenes in "How to Train your Dragon" where 3D was used to show that they have a long way to fly or short way to fall (to show depth, not closeness) are another good example.

Using 3D to make things jump out on you is stupid and gimmicky, and it only reminds you that the stuff on screen cannot get you and isn't real. Good 3D almost gets to the point where it isn't noticed but makes a movie feel 'right'.

I've never bothered going to see a 3D film, even Avatar. I went to see it with my parents, and my Dad is blind in his right eye, so he can't watch 3D films at all...

I suppose I've just never got the hype for it... And the glasses look stupid anyway

Only 3D film I've seen was Titanic and that was alright. Will probably see The Hobbit in 3D too, then 2D just for kicks.
I think the critics' main critisism was shooting at 40fps. That's pretty unpopular for some reason, but Jackson seems confident and he knows his stuff.

Nearly impossible to go to the movies anymore.

Go there more often than not parents bring their noisy kids to the theater and talk.... and talk.... and talk.

Went to see Titanic a couple of weeks ago and sat in front of a kid who kept on talking. It was bad enough I had to sit in a theater filled women who over use perfume, but the who kid talking mad it worse.

"Mom what's that"

"Mom can we go to McDonalds tomorrow"

"Mom why don't they just get a helicopter to save the people"

"ewww boobies"

Come the fahk on really?

Who lets their kid do that?

Asked nicely for the kid to be quite, apparently the female dog of a mother took offense that I was trying to "parent their kid"

No, I wanna watch the fahkin movie in a fahkin theater filled with women who over use perfume.

All in all, better experience than watching a Rock film.

Somewhere in south-central England.

Move to Texas where there is a cinema that throws out people who talk during the film.

I've seen a number of 3D films including Avatar, Tintin, and Up!

Avatar gave me a headache in I-Max though not in standard 3D for some reason.

Apart from the gimmick effect there was nothing that really added to the experience, though and gimmicks get boring really quickly. I mean, I was interested to see it but I didn't feel it was special apart from that fact that it was in 3D and it was interesting to see 3D for the first time.

On the downside, the 3D films tend to look quite dull because you are watching through what are in effect polaroid subglasses. Up! definitely suffered from that.

The fact is that lots of scenes just don't need 3D, while conversely there aren't any scenes which need 3D because cameramen have existing ways of suggesting 3D space by angles, movements, focus, recession, etc.

3D stops people making cam copies in the cinema. The 48fps will also cause a flicker on cam copies.
These things aren't really about the cinema experience, they more about market protection.

I'm concerned because many of the reviews said it looked terrible. Like a dodgy made for TV movie.
Increasing the frame rate often adds a weird 'hyper real' element where everything just looks 'off' for some reason.

Agreed on all counts. 3D can be excellent for comic moves, as denoted in How to train Your Dragon. That was the one time I thought 3D really helped the film, by adding to it, not becoming the point. Otherwise I forget its in 3D about 5 minutes in, other than dealing with the darkness aspects of it.

People said that about the Crytek engine for games when it was first introduced as well.

When you are used to one thing, introducing something new(even if it actually is better) will result in a lot of complaints of "off"-ness.
