So I have been working on painting up my termicide squad.
Squad Pestilence is equipped with Streangth 5, 6 and 8 models so melee vrs a vehicle should be a breeze. Twin combi meltas ensure (hopefully) a nasty ap 1 hit to a vehicle the moment they deploy on the battlefield. The sargent with powerfist is pretty much finished, but the other two need to be clea rcoated and to have their bases touched up some.

questions and comments appreciated as always.

I really like the older models too. The only use that i can see for the new ones is to use them as palenquin. They are perfect for palenquin construction. I have never found nurglings to be terribly effective models, however they can be fun for stuff like tying up enemy thunderfire cannon and the like. Still on my plate for the next few days.

This conversion is one of the best i have seen. I have seen it on another blog too. In fact, this persons nurgle is a more asthetically pleasing version than the GS heavy versions that i often see. Just personal preference.

@ Skalk. Thanks for the props dude. , I have about five more dudes to paint, two of which i need to sculpt and or finish sculpting. I think getting ready for the next game is gonna be a pinch.

@ Moltar ~ Thanks. I have been waiting (procrastinating) on painting those for a couple o years now.

So.
One of my buddies here in the forums has been asking me how i sculpt the plaguemarines. In the interest of demonstration, i am going to be posting a pretty much complete how to for the Nurgle Lord on Bike that i have to have done in two weeks or so. Started in on it today.

Basically i begin by GS the model. Use small amounts of GS. I started off with about a BB sized piece of blue and a BB sized piece of yellow putty. ALSO, Its best to work on multiple different models at the same time so you can get alot done without rushing. This took me about a half an hour. The usual advice is applicable. Use clean sculpting tools that you keep wetting. Also, a warmer work space is pretty nice. Putty is easier to work with when its a bit warm. I work under a bright light that had a fair amount of ambient heat. Only cause it gets cold here though.

When you are smoothing out the putty i usually smooth it towards an edge so that any extra gets pushed to the lip of the edge. This coupled with careful application of pressure makes it easy to smooth it to where you cant see the edge where the putty meats the plastic.
[Thumb - 001.JPG]
apply a small amount of putty in the general area to be sculpted.

[Thumb - 002.JPG]
Smooth putty out with a flat object.

[Thumb - 003.JPG]
Texture with a automatic pencil. Less is more.

[Thumb - 004.JPG]

[Thumb - 005.JPG]
This is the tool that i use to flatten the putty. Smooth the edges

[Thumb - 006.JPG]

[Thumb - 007.JPG]
Texture by pressing small hardened balls of GS into the soft putty, and texture with a automatic pencil lead.

So... Tomorrow i am gonna be posting some updated pics of my soul grinder that i have been working on. I have almost finished one arm and have the other arm about twenty percent finished. Gotta finish the head too, but not to spoil anything.... there will be a really really large cleaver modeled.

Once i finish this and a few other projects, i am going to get rolling on Skalk Bloodax new terrain construction competition. Got a few ideas but i cant start gluing or modelling till the fifteenth of this month. Perfect since i have a huge amount of modelling due on the sixteenth and till then i am going to be struggling to keep up with my work load. Tomorrow, or rather in seven minutes plus, I promise a soul grinder update. Till then.

So as promised i am providing you a look at what may be one of the longer sculpts that i have engaged in. I'm not really happy with a few aspects of this project but its providing me with a lot of insight into how to do the next one.
I had intended to sculpt this for later recast but i am not happy with the way that the belly looks and the overall appearance of the skin. Either way i think it will look good on the table. The harvester gun coming along. Its really the first time that i have used brass in a conversion. The white on the left arm is a mix of 50/50 milliput and greenstuff. It is very easy to smooth with water yet it hardens up very hard. I "like" the mix, but it does change the properties to some degree. I can definitely see using this in the future for some very specific aspects of a larger sculpting project, but i like my GS for most things.

Without further adieu, the project.

That looks awesome. The gun arm in particular . I like the look of his elongated nipple head.

Jokes aside, this is coming along great. I love the tentacle legs.

Been working on my soul grinder of nurgle. The upcoming game i am playing in is going to be a pair of games, 750 and 1750. Since I have no aegis defence line and no real plans to add one (though i suppose i may be forced to by the prevalence of fliers), I must have my soulgrinder completed so i have some form of anti air for this game. Besides that, i have been working on this project on and off for about seven months and i need to get it off my work station

I have been sculpting in the greenstuff/milliputt blend and i have to say, it has good and bad qualities. Greenstuff is much harder to smooth and blend, however GS is also very sticky and firm which can be really beneficial for certain applications. Today i started on the hand and i think GS would have been a better choice. However, since this piece is a WIP and a bit of an experiment, the fact that i am struggling with the medium and not super happy with the results is Ok. I would have been horrified with my results if i was set on this being the be all end all of soul grinders, but since its my first and i plan on doing more, the time i am investing here feels well spent.

Not long ago i watched a documentary about how things tha tyou have seen can leave a subconcious imression on you. Specifically the documentary related to the fact that Disney had apparently copied the Lion King from a japanese cartoon. Disney denies this, but seeing the two characters side by side you cannot help but notice striking similarities. A psychologist explained that the Disney artists likely had seen clips or stills from the japanese cartoon in their youth and the impressions had carried over in their subconciouse and unknowingly influenced their work on the lion king. Looking at my soul grinder and the ultraforge greater demon, i cant help but feel that the same thing has happened to me. Although i reversed the arm that is wielding the cleaver, the weapon and the position it is being held in are nearly identical. Especially the shape of the cleavers blade. I was planning on casting this model for later re-sale if it turned out to my likeing, however this is not going to be happening. Clearly. I need to work on my human proportions as well as th overall feel of the model. However as all WIP go, its a process of discovery.

Questions and comments appreciated.

@ Yggdrasil ~ Appreciate the positive feed back. I really like the cleaver too but if i did decide to cast it I think IP violation letters might be coming my way from ultraforge. I feel like the overall feel is good too. NEXT time i do one of these i feel like i will be a lot better prepared to sculpt it.

@ Galorn ~ Nice to see you stopping by again. If you wanna loot any ideas i would be super stoked and if i can help in any way, just shoot me a PM.

Been working frantically now to get ahead on this. I have finished base coating one biker. He still needs to be dry brushed but for now i feel like i am making some progress. Working on the thumb now for the soul grinder and later today i am gonna try to finish the head. I might abort the horn and just go for a head that rises to a peak. we shall see.

Been working with the soul grinder. I have decieded that there is no way that i can finish three nurgle bikes (painting) and sculpt and paint a nurgle lord on bike plus the last plague marine and just finish the soul grinder. This mandated a change of my list in a pretty big way, but i have to finish this model because it is such a big part of both of the lists that i am running this saturday.
The game has a 750pt game and a 1750 pt game and the soul grinder is in both lists. Today despite the fact that i would really like to have had time to sculpt and finish those models like the bikes, i had to get this done.
I painted the soulgrinder so far by starting with it base coated white, i then washed it with a glaze of burnt umber liquitex paint. I then washed it again with a glaze of bubonic brown. Over this i wet blended dwarf flesh, and dry brushed bleached bone on top of the whole mess. Finally i washed it all with Ogryn Flesh. The cleaver is washed with just burnt umber and then glazed with a thin layer of boltgun metal.

I still have to pick out the details like the skin of the hood, the harvester in brass, and all of the cables, but its coming along.

Looking great all around!

As far as fliers go, punish them for joining the GW arms race by spamming them with Flakk missiles.

Thanks Skalk.

The fliers didn't even make a showing at our game. I faced a nasty space marine list with black templars fielding a grip of terminators and a bunch of drop pods. I did discover that loyalist terminator that are armed with powerswords are the best to challenge with your own term's. Especially when there is only a chaos champion left. I tied up a fairly large unit of loyalists this way. I also found that nurslings are pretty darn good against elder.

So .... I havent updated for a while. I am busy with my new job as a career councilor for youth. It takes up a ton of my time, but it has its rewards as well.
But, in my spare time i have been working on getting a nurgle biker squad up to snuff with a nurgle biker lord. The lord needs a lot of work, but the bikers are coming along. The biker with the ax has a magnet in the right shourlder. That way i can swap him between champion and a meltagun depending on the needs of the rest of the army. The lord has twin magnets in his shoulders that way i can send him out with the burning brand and the black mace.

THis is among some of my other projects which include a Khorn chosen squad and a Khorn assault squad. That way i have another legion that i can feild as black legion. Chosen as troops are an awesome assault objective squad. With mark of khorn they get five attacks on the charge which is pretty bomb and the fact that you can load up on plasma or other special weapons makes it even more attractive.

I have also begun working on skalk bloodax's junk pile contest. Tonight i cut the base which is 60mm out of some old plasticard. I have also begun walking around picking up bits of stuff that i can use to build up my junk pile. My secret debries pile manufacturing area here in my home town is the side of the railroad tracks. People always seem to take TV and other house hold items there to smash. With this in mind i went down there and collected a bag of potential stuff for the challenge. Next step is building up the base.

I need to find a junk pile area like that. My usual place to get random junk is in parking lots, gutters next to sidewalks, and sides of roads.

Nice work on the Nurgle bikers. That will be a hard squad to kill off.

I would love to have worked on it a bit more but things this holiday are crazy. working 50 hours a week and having to plan to meet the new inlaws takes up way to much time.
Ssss all worth it though.

I tried a few new weathering techniques. They did not work.
I also tried out the new corrosion paint from GW. Mixed results.
