In the dark recesses of your mind...

I've read through the thread relating to the upcoming price increase and it seems that people here on dakka are split over how much it effects/doesn't effect their hobby. Personally, I could live with most of the minor price increases, but some of them just seem so strange that it almost feels offensive to me, like the price of the land raider and storm raven. I feel in a way that GW is very distant or detached from it's customer base. That isn't to say that I think everyone should feel the way I do about the increase, but it is my personal opinion.
Couple this increase in price with the problems I have had dealing with finecast models this last year and I am to the point where I don't really want to spend much more money with GW. I had planned to expand my necrons with some of the new wraiths, canoptek spiders, and night scythes, but I don't think I'll be doing that now. I won't say that I'm not ever spending another dollar with them, because I know I will be picking up an ork bomma and the new edition rulebook, and maybe a few odds and ends now and then, I'll also continue reading Black Library books, but I'm done with major purchases. I planned to start a chaos marine army in the winter, and that is definitely out of the question now.
I will continue to play 40k and fantasy. I have three 40k armies and one fantasy army that will serve me just fine in that regard. So what will I do with my hobby budget now that it won't be getting spent on 40k?
I've been looking for an excuse to try out many different games. I have about 35 points of Khador models sitting on the shelf that need to be assembled and painted. I'll likely expand upon that force. I have a Lilith starter crew unopened on the shelf as well. I'll be sinking money into expanding my Neverborn. I also ordered the Infinity rulebook and an Aleph starter pack. I'm most excited by this right now, and will probably get to painting them as soon as they arrive. There is not really an Infinity presence at my FLGS, but I really am into the models so much that I think I'll enjoy just painting and dispaying them.
Beyond those systems that I have already made some investment into, there are two other games I am itching try, and that I think, because of their low cost of entry, will be ideal for talking others into playing. Brushfire is the first. I don't know much about the game at all, but have admired the models for quite some time. The other is Blackwater Gulch, which I really love the idea of the American old west setting. I've already been looking at a few miniature companies to find cool western style models.
I can not say that I am thankful for this current price increase, but coupled with the problems I have experienced with finecast models, a door has opened for me, which has expanded my desire to play other wargames systems. I'm excited at the prospect of painting models from many different lines, and maybe meeting some new players outside of the warhammer group I play with.

40k stuff probably. I've just built up a big Valhallan army, but it's all been secondhand and would be no more or less expensive before or after the price hike. I might start an Eldar army when they get a new codex and I finish these Valhallans, but it's something way the hell out there for me. I live alone and have a good job so I can afford $3 more on a Rhino or whatever. Even so, it doesn't invalidate the piles of models I have already.
I am, however, going to be picking up some Defiance Games stuff. I like their "harder" sci-fi models, and look forward to them getting a more comprehensive range of models. I've also got an interest in Dust, but I feel like I'll be WW2'd out after I finish my Valhallans.

I've really got enough GW stuff to keep me going for, well, if I'm honest then I'll probably never even finish painting the many hundreds of unpainted models in my collection. I'll still pick up the odd model or two here and there, but I've finally got a large army that plays well and has a paint job that I'm happy with, so I doubt I'll be starting a new force any time soon.
However, I've just dipped my toes into the oceans of Dystopian Wars and I'm loving the hell out of it. I expect that most of my gaming budget will be given to Spartan Games over the next few months

I doubt my habits will change massively. I will continue buying Mantic whenever they produce something cool that I want, Red Box if I feel like something really pretty, Hordes for my gaming fix and I will buy the odd thing for my Warhammer collections when GW release plastics that are nice enough to justify it.
I find the hobby generally pretty pricey, so I shy away from spending on a "full army" unless I can work out a way to make it pretty cheap. Warmachine seems to be an exception to this, as the modular nature of the purchases makes it "feel" like less money, even though it's as expensive (or more expensive) in some places.

The remainder of 2012's budget is going toward 6th edition 40k and a new 4x4 game board in post (zombie) apocalypse theme. Trying to decide if I want to make a display board for my GK in the next month for the Armies on Parade... probably not. I have 4 armies I like and only need to add to them, never had any interest in xeno armies so when new CSM comes around is when I will first feel the new prices. By then I will be so rabid for new CSM it won't matter (and GW know that!).

I have just about everything I would ever need for my Chaos Space Marines, Chaos Demons, Orks and IG. I will need a bit of new stuff with the New Chaos on the horizon, but ill pick it all up on release day, regardless of cost. I am not going give up on 40k / Years of work + 1000's of dollars over a price increase. I can't even imagine how many price increases we have lived through up to this point.
After all the new GW, my budget will be going towards finishing up my Farrow up to 50 point and then 50 points of Seaforge Dwarves (Since GW won't bring back Squats)
I am also expanding my Malifaux, but we will see how far that goes. The model quality is a little lacking for my tastes.

GW products. I will be buying 3 Fightas, I will probably get at least one Stormtalon to loot for my orks and then when 6th edition drops, I will buy whatever bitz/models I need to convert to whatever new weapon options I don't already have.
Then I will go back to purchasing random FW or 3rd party models/bitz for whatever project I am working on at the time, until GW releases new Greenskin codex or models for me to buy.
I will not be buying any 3rd party parts which do not fit in with the scale and look of nelson-orks. This means yes to Pupperwars, Kromlech, Forgeworld, Maxmini and so on and not a dime to mantic ever.
I may be getting some PP to convert to 40k orks as I have seen some warjack limbs to ork cybork conversions which really work. I also like the Hordes models for the swamp creatures like gators and turtles which may end up as a bloodbowl team or just fun display models.
Oh, and if Bloodbowl shows up this year, I will be giving GW a fist full of money too.
So basically nothing will change because the price increase is not at all unreasonable or even a blip on my radar. 2/3rds of GW's customers never play the game and buy GW explicitly for the models because I like how they look so if they release a model I want, I buy it. I don't find GW's prices at all out of line with the other model companies I buy from. All the ones who make models which look good enough to be justified to be bought cost similar prices per model or per bit.

$300 a month? That's a new army every 2 months, even with the latest price increase. Personally, the price change isn't going to affect me. I've got a few things I'll buy from GW, but no new armies planned. Some Empire stuff, another Arachnarok, maybe some Mk IV armor from FW, but that's about it. My Warriors of Chaos army is going to be almost entirely 3rd party. Just need to find some marauders...

After last years GW price rise I more or less said 'no' to buying a new GW army. I wrote this article on it.....
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/390346.page
So now where am I? I'm playing Dust Tactics every week. This for me is by far the best, the most tactically challenging game I've ever played and we love it. I cannot recommend this enough. If you actually want something that really tests you, but is a fun game, then this is for you. I liken it to Space Hulk; easy to learn but difficult to master.
Firestorm Armada; a great skirmish game from Spartan Games. Very cheap to get into, a rule book and starter fleet is less than 45 GBP. Well supported and although not as good as Dust Tactics, still a great game.
Sedation Wars. I've always been a huge fan of Mike Mcvey since his early GW days. His Space Hulk Diorama from the early 1990's is still my favourite. I've just pledged $100 on the Kickstarter page to get a copy of this game.
On the GW front, I luckily bought all my Orks when they came out and 3 years on I'm still putting them together, although I'm aiming to finish them by summer end. I'll buy new things to keep my armies updated, but won't be investing in a new army. The prices for me are now just too much.

Dropzone Commander looks pretty enticing, but I'll probably flesh out my Brushfire Scyzantines.
I picked up Freeblades at Adepticon and wouldn't mind getting into it a little more.
GW's getting an extended break from my money, which honestly doesn't change much. The only GW I've bought recently was actually Forgeworld except for some 2nd hand stuff I nabbed at Adepticon's Gamer Flea Market.

I've been more of a collector/painter since about 1983 or so. The majority of my collection is made up of GW but I do dip into other ranges as I become aware of them; this ranges from a single model to a squad or more. Late last year I became very bored with the arms race that I see GW has turned into; 'buy this or your army will never win!'. So I decided then that the finishing touches to my last 2 armies would be it for me and GW. Through Amazon I managed to get all the bits I wanted really cheap(otherwise I wouldn't have bothered). This year I've decided to just buy whatever ranges or single figures caught my eye. So far I've got figures from Denizen, Defiance, Anvil, Warforge,Foundry and Statuesque in Edinburgh. As I find new exciting stuff via the web and Dakka I'll buy even more!
I used to get angry about being priced out of the 'hobby'. Now I've realised that there are many many other avenues of the hobby to explore. GW can make us perhaps too insular;not any more!

I only model and paint, I don't really play 40k. My Space Marine army is mostly collected. I've bought a total of 5 new-on-sprue kits, and I've decided that is going to be it. The rest is second hand. I will probably buy a few more metal models and old-school rhinos off of ebay to flesh out the force, but I don't plan on giving GW another cent, and that includes their paint.
Reaper Miniatures will be getting more of my hobby budget, because their stuff is amazing.

I was originally introduced to the hobby late last year through the 40k videogames (specifically, Dawn of War 2: Retribution), the setting really interested me, and I thought "Maybe this is my chance to get into a more creative hobby", so I picked up the painting starter kit.
A couple hundred dollars and almost a year later, I realize I wasn't entirely sure what I was getting into. Between seeing how GW treats its customers and how much money you really have to spend to get a decent sized army, I got really disheartened about playing the game itself, though I still enjoyed painting the models (even if I'm not that good at it).
The price hikes really were the final straw for me. I admit at the moment my family is not that well off and I was already heavily digging into the small "stuff for fun" budget I already had and even feeling a bit guilty about it sometimes. Recently I've learned that when a company shows signs of really genuinely not caring about their customers and trying lots of cash grabbing schemes, it's better to drop them right then instead of sticking around only to be even more disappointed later on.
For now I'm getting into Warmachine and very interested in Infinity. I think Skirmish games are probably more my style anyway, because I'd prefer to collect small "armies" of multiple factions and play multiple, shorter games, than to throw hundreds and hundreds and only have one faction to play a game for hours and hours and hours, personally.
All of this is my own personal experience / feelings of course, I'm not putting down people who like army-sized games or still plan to support GW, it's just not my thing.

Since I have no need for the stormraven or land raiders or finecast dark elves I guess I'll spend the money on the normal stuff.
It is pretty absurd to raise some models by 25% but most stuff is just inflation (Although I disagree with that since inflation is currently at historic lows, but thats their justification
All products rise in price but the main difference is GW has no real direct competitors for the products they produce.. so they can do whatever they want I suppose.
I'll be buying new products but I don't need old stuff so we'll see what the price the new stuff at.

My money (what a joke ) will be going to people on E-bay with good deals for FW / IG / 3rd party items ( RSJake ) / new tau items. Otherwise besides the new Tau Codex (again E-bay, most likely) im gonna be looking into other games (NOT WARMACHINE ) and playing smaller games with what i got.
Lately, my group has been running small kill team games with 2-3 squads and keeping the plots and stories as a guide for upgrades and such. The games become a lot more exciting on a 4x4 when your not seeing 6x chimeras, 2 valks , melta everywhere and plasma
Honestly, we are burned out on the arms race that GW tried to make us a part of and we as a group decided we wanted no part of it. Keep your melta, plasma and APC's. Its the infantry that win wars anyway.
Some of our group did go WM/H but i refuse to believe that "its cheaper". PM me if you want to argue that but its only my honest opioion.
we've been making up new game modes:
Last stand (Like DOW:II's) on the table top
Kill Team with extra fluff / background
Zombie Escape!
and other ideas.
Its really whatever we want to do for the day. Thats the fun in gaming, not winning with your plastic army men against others plastic army men but having a good time.

Games-Workshop. I actually find it funny how much people complain about the price increases. If you were already into this hobby, you knew it was expensive and overpriced from the beginning. The price increases are just a drop in the bucket when you look at the overall of what you accepted to pay when you entered the hobby.

It wasn't that spendy a hobby to get into when I started in 1987
You could build your own tanks from deoderant containers and plastic toys, and they recommended only having a few models in your army
It is now
Of course my income is higher now too, and i'm too hooked to quit anytime soon
