You know what I'm saying. 6th Ed. drops in a month, and suddenly, if you don't have a full FoC slot of fliers, and your opponent does, you are at a huge disadvantage.
Would this cause no end of rage? Or would you sullenly drag your butt, and your $150 bucks to GWs waiting hands and get three?

As a Necron player, this is almost a non-issue for me, as our Flier kit happens to double as our best Dedicated Transport option.

However, were that not the case, then the situation would irritate me. But it would be completely expected, and since 5th Ed. was completely dominated by mech (of which the Necrons generally had very little) I would love to see a meta where Fliers play an important role, just because SW, GK and BA do not have access to Fliers.

So I, for one, welcome our new Flier overlords.

...that being the case, however, Fliers will not be mandatory in order to compete, for the reason that I have underlined above.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

It will be interesting to see what units get upgraded with the AA special rule. IG with Hydras would probably be OK still, but I think armies at the back of the upgrade cycle will probably suffer from lack of fliers; I can certainly see them as being the "must have" item of 6th... since they are new and not many people will have them... so they can potentially sell a lot of them...

$150 to buy three? F-that, I'm spending $330 to get nine

On a more serious note, if they work close to the way pancake edition played, they will gain a fair amount of survivability, but be far more difficult to effectively employ every turn that you are utilizing their special moves...at least in a gunship role. Flier transports would become one of the best modes of transportation, as long as you didn't need to use the transport as a mobile pillbox.

In other words, I'm not overly worried about it. Of couse I do plan on finally putting together my scythespam list as soon as 6th hits, as long as they remain at least as good as they are now...so I might be a bit jaded

I don't really see how that could realistically happen.

It would be easy to make the Stormraven count as a Flyer meaning that GK and BA would have fliers, just as making the Valkyrie/Vendetta count as fliers for IG.

It would be a simple errata.

Leaving only SW on the ground.

Given GW's recent history of making the newest kit at least "very useful" if not "game breaking", I think expecting anything less is delusional.

Further, I expect at least one list to get some special character that fundementally "breaks" the basic rules that everyone else has to use for them.

Aye the only Marine Chapters who will be stuck when 6th launches will be BT, DA and SW. (Depending on what they classify Land Speeders as?)

I am quite positive that Storm Ravens will count as flyers for any new Flyer section in the next 40K book.

Given that the rules for the StormTalon and the Ork Bommas don't mention the word "flier" either (they are all just Fast Skimmers), they would also need such an errata, surely?

And Tyranids.

They'll have to go one of two ways - accept that all things with Wings are Fliers - opening it up for Hive Tyrants, Shrikes, Gargoyles, Skyslashers and Harpies and giving 'nids a Flying Circus option....

Or none will count - leaving 'nids in the same boat as the puppies.

Not quite the same boat... I think the SW will continue to do just fine as they are.

If fliers become mandatory to compete... then 40k will be just like it is now, with certain armies being leaps and bounds better than others.

More than likely, the flier rules will be triggered off of the "supersonic" rule. Easy erratta for the valks and stormravens would be all that's required.

Where would Daemons get a flier from? A daemony harpy esque type of thing? I seriously doubt that this would happen.

You seriously think updating anything for the daemons codex has even crossed their mind yet? Heck we'll be lucky if it even occurs to them at this point.

Aye, after with what happened with 8th Fantasy I am expecting a big FAQ errata around the release of 6th.

No, I'm saying the opposite. I probably should have put an '[/sarcasm]' after the second question mark.

I should note that despite my snarkiness at GW for their crap policies re codex updates, I don't think fliers will become "mandatory" in 6th ed,, save perhaps in the possible case where they're great transport options and meching up remains mandatory in 6th.

I'm assuming that's going to be the case. GW's got to make their money somehow after all... They went the tank route... planes are the next logical step in the progression.

Maybe it could be something along the lines of the Blight Drone or FW's current range of Daemon Engines, posessed bio(daemono?)-mechanical things.

And yes, Daemons should get an update on 6th ed, probably need it even more than 'nids. Like Sisters, they're becoming a rare sight lately. It's kinda sad.

Space Wolves have access to Stormeagles, so it's just a matter of whether GW officially makes Forge World kosher. And I imagine they'd upgrade Stormravens to Fliers for GK/BA. And for those speaking against Tyranids, Harpies are probably going to be upgraded to fliers too (although they kind of suck in my experience).

My question is, why do you need a SM in PA flying a plane?

As a Tyranid player I would be pissed. Yes the Harpy could be considered a flyer, but still the harpy wouldn't be able to hold up to the other flyers.
