If 5th edition was a sports season ending in a championship, who won?
My picks would be:
IG - Regular Season Winner
GK - Most Improved
Dark Eldar - Playoff Champion

Guess Black Templars and Tau win the "veterans" award, seeing as they're the two oldest Codices currently.
I'd nominate Orks for "aged well", that Codex is still going strong!

Of course the Grey Knights were most improved. They broke up with the Sisters and realized the relationship had only been holding them back from achieving their dreams. The dream of chasing down and slaughtering everybody, instead of just specializing and concentrating on daemons like they had in the fluff for 20 years.

Grey Knights take the league, with Space Wolves a close second, while Sisters of Battle are relegated, and Tau struggle to stay up.

Dark Eldar get my vote, they started the edition hardly ever being used, having next to no fluff and some truly awful models. Now they have a competitive codex that's full of cool backstory and they've got the best looking range of models games workshop have ever produced.

Simple, Grey Knights for their growth from Chaos Killers to Universe Devouring, God Killing, Corpse Raping, General Win Button levels of Over-Powered. (oh did I mention they seriously messed with the fluff? I mean come on... wearing SoB for decoration? Because they *NEED* extra protection from the Dark Gods...)

Orks have won. Aging like fine wine, they continue to hold their own as FoTM armies come and go. Watching empires rise and fall is indicative of winning, in my book at least.

While Grey Knights might be the popular choice due to the effectiveness of their codex, I'll have to vote Dark Eldar. They got a range with some of the best models GW has ever producted, an effective codex with lots of fluff, and managed to get their update after almost a decade without a peep. They went from quite possibly the least popular army in the game with the worst Gary Morley models to a beautiful army that, while not as common as some other armies, is pretty easy to find.

IMHO, The Imperial Guard. A great codex update, lots of fun, new units and improvements to some old ones. The addition of Lumbering Behemoth to the LR really boosted it's playability and the addition of so many special characters that effect Force Org added a some cool options.

The Grey Knights, Necrons, Imperial Guard, and Dark Eldar all went from easily bottom tier armies into mainstays of the current top tier meta. The big losers were the Eldar, Chaos, Tyranids, and Tau, who went from top tier in fourth edition to bottom of the pile in fifth.

I think Orks should atleast win a 'Sportsmanship award'. Fairly well balanced, fun to play with, fun to play against and some of the greatest (not in a powerful sense) units in the 40k universe!

I nominate Black Templars for the "Hard ol' Fart" competition for being one of the oldest and still able to go the distance when it comes to putting up an admirable fight.
I also nominate Orksfor the most fun to play against. No matter how bad you win or lose they have the capacity to be the killiest thing ever or fail with spectacular results.

I'm really inclined to agree, BT can be quite nasty, and orks, though problematic, have proven staying power.
Necrons really came out of left field, feels like a whole new would with them running about now, but GK really shook us all up.

ID agree with this. Although they do still have a few units that are top tier worthy anyways. Orks is a great army that aged rather well. So that means when they get updated, they will probably ruin Orks

What it seems orks need is not new units but the codex change from a focused eldar aspect feel back to the mob.
The continually get fun and effective units from forgeworld and now were the first to get a useful flier.

Totally agree. One of the older codex's now and still competitive and versatile without be cheesy.
And the most fun by far. And it's the fun that wins over all else

Or win half of our fights in this edition.

I won 5th edition! lol.
GK had a strong lead at the end, but were DQed when they failed their steroid test. Same for SW.
I've seen almost every army be competitive in the right hands. Looking back, the first half of 5th seemed like an almost different game for some reason. Less meq players, less mech spam.
If I had to pick one army, I'll probably go with Orks. They have managed to be just as good through the whole ed, and always put up a good fight when any of my friends or I play against them.
