GW is trying to block them from using thier codexes. Lone Wolf put out a statement appologising for the inconvenience but said they are trying to resolve it.

No doubt the rules for army building had special characters unchecked. This is the 40K data file FAq as it comes up quite a lot.

You could always use a pen, paper and the codex. This ensures no errors are made. I've found armybuilder doesn't help you understand your codex and tends to have small errors in it.

Battlescribe ftw. Just verify that the information is correct or fill it out yourself as I did. Although I do like pen paper and codex it gets rather annoying when you cannot read what someone wrote or when they have no idea what organization is.

Nor should it help you understand your codex. That is not its purpose. Its sole function is help you calculate build costs. The data files are not created by Army Builder anyway. Theya re created by people who work for free. They are always updating and revising the files. If people are unhappy with the speed they do so, they can always revise the data files for free.

Thank you for yer replies, especially this one, for tau there are two lists under rules, tau empire and tau farsight. we had tau empire selected.

Under roster rules and "special characters". Ensure the box is ticked.
I don't use AB anymore though (more because I don't play any games that it supports).

Hear, hear. It's easy to cock up math when using pen and paper (even simple math). It's tough to fool a calculator.
Besides, with AB it's really nice not having to flick through pages and pages of codex to refresh your memory on what a piece of wargear does. It's not hard to flick through the book to find them, but some codices do have this habit of having this in the wargear section:
X Piece of Wargear - See page 37.

Amry builder is just a program, the data files are done independently and are available for free. So I dont understand how GW can stop AB from doing anything, since AB doesnt support the files....

It looks like Army Builder is just asking the folks that made the User Created files to host them elsewhere and then updating the links to them. Right?

That's pretty much all it would take, and presumably they can still download and import the datafiles manually
so in summary:
- Army Builder is unaffected
- The GW datafiles are unaffected
- Development continues on both, uninterrupted
- GW have taken no action against Lone Wolf/the 40K file maintainers/Armybuilder
- this all happened three weeks ago.
all that has changed is a single repository from which AB draws its automatic updates has been asked to remove the 40K files, so they won't appear until a new repository has been set up, you have to go grab them manually. there is no "Shutting down", there is no "Kicking Armybuilder in the crotch", there is no "Flexing of sphincters", there's just temporary mild irritation.
It's roughly equivalent to losing the TV remote down the back of the sofa. Now you have to get up to change the channel, but the TV is still there, the channels still exist, you just have to do a little more work to use them.

Games Workshop starts publishing Apple specific digital media that does not include Army Building tools.
Games Workshop then asks an army builder data file site to take down it's material.
Could be a random legal sweep--could be a sign of a GW specific Army Builder app/program to come. I'm inclined to believe this is a sign of a future product.

yes, GW had the IAL (decent piece of software, if a tad bloated) that they then split off into Armies of the Imperium/Enemies of the Imperium (horrible, closed pieces of software wholly reliant on GW for updates that stopped coming soon after release)

Honestly, I'm surprised this didn't happen years ago. I hope the reason is because they're making their own army builder app that won't suck (even though it'll cost $87.95).

Army building software adds great value to a game, IMO.
Privateer Press have the best approach, not only supporting free software, but also building their own War-room app and providing it for free as standard.
Great way to add a lot of value to a gaming system.

Thank god. Honestly I have seen so many mistakes with people using army builder and they get so anal that Army Builder is right that they refuse to check their book. Finally something is being done about it and I can enjoy games against legal lists.

Quite a leap of faith there in the assumption that a decrease in the use of AB will result in an increase of games with legal lists.
