Subject: October release: "Dread Fleet" - Fantasy naval game (pics and content list page 15 and 16)
When I described it to someone just now they said "Oh. Man of War"
From what I can tell looking at the pics and the nondescript description, it's an all enclosed board game, so not a collectible (I think) so no more outlay after you buy it.
And whilst it looks pretty and on par with a lot of all enclosed board games, it's about $40 more than a comparative board game.
But then....I thought FF did their board games. Hmm...Am I wrong - is it a collectible?

I saw this, headed over to the local GW to trade in some shrinkwrapped boxes I had (since I decided not to start 40k and stick to fantasy), and preordered it. Ended up only paying $2.50
Also got the book by Phil Kelly.
I think it looks marvelous. Thanks to Kroot for getting up the info so fast, as I only had an hour before the store closed and have a wedding to go to tomorrow!
I know most people on this board are 40k-mainly players, but this is just what I was looking for as a fantasy player. My next projects are finishing a Hordes army and then either Infinity or Firestorm Armada most likely. I didn't want to start a new system of GW's, so the one-off game is perfect .
Very, very psyched about this! Might even be able to get my wife to play it (long shot, but still).

I think the Prussian Sky Fortress is the best selling model of the game. The Antarticans will probably outstrip that pretty soon.
Apparently they announced the next factions coming up - France, Russia, and the Ottoman Empire.
I really like the French battleship from GenCon. I'm interested in seeing what they do for the Russians. But I really like the whole Jules Vern vibe I get from the CoA stuff.
OT: While DF isn't for me, I'd love for it to be really successful, in the hope that GW might consider resurrecting Man 'O War (long-shot, I know).

And, like Space Hulk, it's produced in "limited quantities"...because when you invest thousands of dollars into injection molds you only want to make enough money to pay the molds off and not a dime more.
$115 is way too damn much. I wouldn't mind getting it and trying it out, but not at that price and not when "quantities are limited". If it's now or never I'm afraid it'll be never for me.

How does this work? I've seen reference to it elsewhere on Dakka. It seems rather odd.

He exchanged unopened boxes/blisters for credit and then put that credit toward his DF pre-order.

Hm... anyone who's ever played anything produced by FFG? Probably would have been $60-$70, with possible expansion in the future. And the Australians could have gotten it for a reasonable price.
Guys, this is why people say there's so much internet negativity that doesn't reflect what most people really feel.
I went to the GW store to preorder this evening, and there was a guy there doing the exact same thing... another 4 guys in the store that I know, and all were fairly positive about the game.
The miniatures look great, the mat looks really good, the book and everything. There's a lot in there. I know people think it costs too much, but as I am now buying other companies' game systems, I have found them not to be any cheaper- if anything, more expensive per model (my privateer press army, trollbloods, Definitely is).
The largest ships are 100mm long- that's a chariot base. I.e., they're Big. I know the islands aren't ships, but I'm sure they'll make the game a lot more interesting, and I like that the mat and terrain and everything is in the box.
So, could we get back to talking about the actual contents of the game?
This video shows the ships really, really well (10 minutes long!).
Which doesn't matter, since everything you need to play is in the box!
Why people want expansion, I don't know... that means it's costing More money, than a one-time purchase that has everything you need. Imo, it's just a completely different thing.
Both are good, and this has a lot of merit. Some people were down on Space Hulk, too, when it came out. I certainly didn't jump on it. But looking back you see what a good deal it was. Imo, that's how this will be, too.

yes but the main place I play games won't let me play it there
I don't have enough people to play it with, outside (at other stores) to make it really worth it to me

Ah, that's not really why we're saying it's too expensive.
It's not a collectible. It's a board game. You can get a board game for much less, about AUD$40. From what I've been told by the veterans they're essentially re-releasing Man O' War so doing something they've done before and churching it up to be new and shiny.
FF normally do their board games and as someone else has already cited, if FF had done it, it would be cheaper and have expansions coming. FF have a set release formula most of the time.
After all, the Horus Heresy board game was nowhere near so expensive.
On another note, what are the ship miniatures made from? It doesn't say anywhere.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh - and why do people want expansions to a board game? It's really common. Otherwise you're play the same thing over and over and over again.

@ Lord Poison- Well, that's not really a related issue...
I might get a better feel for this in the fantasy section of the board, but I think part of the reason it's not drawing some of you is that you don't play in that universe and so all the connections to it are not as attractive.
But to me, this is really interesting and much more of a value than the recent Storm of Magic release. Basically, they went for it, and I think they did a pretty good job of it. With any vision this specific, everything's not going to please everybody- but I think it's pretty awesome how "fantasy" it is, rather than the more realistic ship games already out on the market, which do the expandable ship-to-ship combat much better than GW probably would, and which I'm glad they're not directly trying to compete with (and possibly hurt their business).

I stopped playing 40K I am a fantasy only player as of now, but its the point for me
I mean cost aside, thats the big issue for me, and I think its a valid one

I'm not sure why people keep saying this, other than the fact that there are ships involved. Man O' War wasn't a stand alone game, was it? It's like the difference between Space Hulk and 40k, right?
Also, the ships are plastic (to answer your other question).

The veterans you're listening to (or at least your interpretation of what they're saying) are wrong.
Man O'War was an entire line, essentially an "army building" system with ships.
This is not that. This is everything you require, with nothing extra, to play.
FF normally do their board games and as someone else has already cited, if FF had done it, it would be cheaper and have expansions coming. FF have a set release formula most of the time.
If you really think it would be cheaper, I suggest you think again. FFG is expensive.
After all, the Horus Heresy board game was nowhere near so expensive.
Uhhh...
Horus Heresy was $99.95USD.
That's not that far off the $115 mark that Dread Fleet here is retailing for.
On another note, what are the ship miniatures made from? It doesn't say anywhere.
Plastic, judging from the sprue shots. Finecast/resin is a lighter shade than plastic.

That mechanical squid is my favorite ship of the bunch, btw. Followed, surprisingly, by the high elf one (very well executed!), and then that weird elemental one.
And if you watch the video, the squid is captained by a Chaos Dwarf . Back with a vengeance, baby!

It comes with a 5 x 3.5 printed fabric game mat. Not a lot of board games available for 60 bucks include that. In fact, a Sea Mat from someplace like Monday Knight costs over 35 bucks. The 3d islands for Pirates from GF9 are 30 bucks a set, and though painted are not quite as big or detailed as these look to be.
Add in the ships, cards and rules and other stuff and I can see how the price got to be where it is.
