Well kudos to GW trying something new! Although I'm not able to buy it, I hope it's a success and we get more variety beyond the 'big 3' (well, big 2 and one shrivelled corpse ) in the future!

It has nothing to do with that for me, it's simply the price and limited availability that kill it for me. $115 is too much for a board game, and definitely too much for an impulse buy. $60-70 would have been more "appropriate" compared to other board games, and would have also been low enough for me to say "screw it" and buy it right away.

In my opinion GW is just being greedy again and they're going to lose sales because of it. eBay scalpers rejoice though, you have yet another item to charge 2-3 times the retail price for because it's "LIMITED RUN OOP MINT COLLECTIBLE!"...

You know, I've been wanting to get Castle Ravenloft for a while, maybe I'll just get that instead.

That's fair, but as CaptJake points out, what you get in the box makes a lot of sense for the price, and I don't personally think you could get that level of very Large ship models, peripheral models (very small ships and some sea monsters), islands, gaming mat, and the color book and cards for less elsewhere.

CaptJake wrote:It comes with a 5 x 3.5 printed fabric game mat. Not a lot of board games available for 60 bucks include that. In fact, a Sea Mat from someplace like Monday Knight costs over 35 bucks. The 3d islands for Pirates from GF9 are 30 bucks a set, and though painted are not quite as big or detailed as these look to be.

Add in the ships, cards and rules and other stuff and I can see how the price got to be where it is.

In fact, among miniature companies probably only GW could do something of this nature for this price, due to economies of scale... particularly to make the molds for the plastic models.

It doesn't really matter though, because even if I did want it I don't have $115 to blow on a board game right now, and it'll be unavailable when I do have it in a week or two.

How does this work? I've seen reference to it elsewhere on Dakka. It seems rather odd.

He exchanged unopened boxes/blisters for credit and then put that credit toward his DF pre-order.

yeah, I got that much. I was unaware that GW just took unopened product back for credit. I assume you need a receipt? Especially with so many discount etailers etc around. That's why it seemed a bit odd the way it was written.

@ Sidstyler- Yeah, I agree about that part...

Does anyone know, from the video/description/etc, what warhammer race this ship is from, if any?

The others, to fill out Kroothawk's original list:

Heldenhammer (Empire, taken by pirates)
Bloody Reaver (Vampire Counts)
Swordfish (?)
Curse Zandri (Khemri)
Scimitar (?)
Shadewraith (?)
Grimnir's Thunder (Dwarfs)
Black Kraken (Chaos Dwarfs)
Seadrake (High Elves)
Skabrus (Skaven)

I think the Swordfish and Shadewraith are also undead / vampire counts, so I'm really just wondering about the elemental one.

What is Araby?

@ scipio.au- Sorry, I missed your post! I'd bought the boxes from the same store recently, so he knew I hadn't gotten them elsewhere. I did have at least a few of the receipts but they weren't needed.

The Swordfish is pirates, I think, the Scimitar is Araby, and the Shadwraith is some kinda ghost ship undead.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Araby is the equivalent of the Golden Age of Islam in the Middle East, essentially, which lasted from roughly... Ugh, I can't remember. Something like the 9th century to the 15th? And all the mythology therein, IE, Djinn, magic carpets, etc.

I always wished they made more background, so far only a handful of models have been made for them (and of course rules for a magic carpet)

Araby has received a little fluff from time to time in different WHF rules editions. Araby has it's own Warmaster faction though. The ship in question definitely has an Araby feel to it with the djinn looking thing on the prow.

Urgh, $220NZD. I guess I won't be getting it. Which is a pity because I really do like the look of it. I'd probably even have bought it had I had a month or two to save for it, but $220 is way beyond my impulse buying ability.

The largest ships are the size of chariot bases. The cheapest chariot base models ASFAIK are the TK chariots which are 3 for $35. So right there you can already see that the 10 ships alone should run along $60-70 themselves + the cards + the gaming mat + the scenery. The Aussie price sucks though.

I think people are jaded due to Space Hulk being PRICED TOO LOW because GW knew it would sell like hotcakes. What was it 12-13 exquisitely detailed Ternimators + 30 good genestealers (only about 20 could really be used though). The models alone were worth something like $200 and I got the game for $100.

It's pretty neat looking. I think for the price point, most other companies would have supplied the models pre-painted. Sure, tell me I'm wrong, and then go look at Heroscape. That may be the big killer for this as a board game honestly. Simple paint jobs, a dip, some decals and a matte overlay and you increase the audience outside of the sacred "Hobby", and you grab a huge chunk of the board game crowd. Just my 2 cents. And again, before anyone starts screaming that you'd have to be INSANE to try and do all of that and still charge around 100 bucks, somehow Hasbro did it, and cheaper to boot (Half the price actually). According to a few folks on here, ONLY GW could have made this game so cheaply...so surely they could have matched that performance, right?

The steam powered hammer is pretty stupid IMNSHO. It seems out of place on the ship, even with the Empire's long history of the engineering school. Let me clarify: Fluff-wise I think it's fine. It just looks stupid tacked on to the front of a multi-decked Galleon-like monster.

Overall, really nice models though. I was expecting something a bit more basic, and GW did a nice job of exceeding my expectations with the majority of the sculpts.

Agreed, Amaya!

Also, the overextending (or attempt to) of IP goes both ways. A mechanical squid is not a new idea...

Agreed... also, what game by Hasbro are you referring to? People keep mentioning other games that have the same quality for cheaper, but I haven't seen it. The games I've seen compared to it so far are not of the same quality at all, although I'd love to be shown to be wrong in this...

I also agree with your assessment that if they could have done any small amount of prepainting, say even just colored plastic/sprues like in space hulk, they could have opened up their market (not that they seem to be trying to, with the exception of the internet guys talking about getting their relative (I think aunt? ) to play it).

Providing pre-painted models is is still something GW won't do on principle. Of course, most pre-painted models are average at best, but it's something that I think GW will have to accept eventually - look at the number of players who clearly don't want to spend time on painting models, and it's obvious that they would sell a lot more if it painting wasn't necessary.

I watched the video; I like the undead ships - there is obviously quite a lot of Pirates of the Caribbean in there. The models have a lot of character, which is what I'd expected, given where GW has got to with plastic design. It looks like a pretty good concept overall, but (as some have commented) you'd have to wonder at its longevity as a game. It's not that it's one-off - we've all become too conditioned to games 'needing' an endless supply of supplements and extras - the issue is going to be whether it's too repetitive, or has a couple of sure-fire paths to victory.

Just placed my pre order for this. I think it looks like a pretty good deal for the amount of stuff you get with it. Also, the 115 dollar pricetag isnt that bad if you go in with a friend and split the cost. Thats what we did. Cant wait to try it out!

I went to the GW store to preorder this evening, and there was a guy there doing the exact same thing... another 4 guys in the store that I know, and all were fairly positive about the game.

I would expect that guys hanging out in a GW store probably are "drinking the kool aid" don't you think?

Otherwise i wouldnt expect them to be hanging out there...

Do people that are down on GW hang out in GW stores? Would the staff allow them to if they vocally expressed displeasure toward GW?

I'm just sayin...

He says it's captained by the Grand Magus of Araby or something like that. Note the Djinn on the bow of the ship, and the scimitar on the sail.

Fair enough. I wasn't listening very closely - I was focusing on the toy boats.

Yeah, I thought the same thing when I saw the picture; that it was some generic wizard boat or, somehow, an elemental boat.

I'm personally pleased to see Araby and the Chaos Dwarfs get some attention in a release GW is actually hyping.

This kind of reasoning bums me out. If you hang out in a GW store, you're drinking the kool-aid and not able to vocally express displeasure toward GW? Of course they can, and do, from what I've seen... obviously, they play GW games, as do most people on these forums. I do, too, and I express displeasure about GW all the time. I also play other companies' games- just not while I'm in a GW store on their tables.

I also said "fairly" positive... not everyone was heading to the PC to preorder it. Just 2 of us, and I was going to be doing that almost no matter what just because I've been waiting for it and had those things to trade in, with nothing else needed for my fantasy army, and not wanting to start another army of GW's.

I like the ships, I'd love to have an art book for this game. There's some cool concepts and I like how they kept Blanche's distorted dimensions on the ships. Even the steam hammer looks decent enough.

But no, no interest in playing it.

I did chuckle a bit at the 'sea hulk' though. Why let a good name go to waste ay?
