Hello everyone. Recently me and my friends were having a discussion relating to the new Eldar since there are a couple sneak peeks out already and it led to the discussion of future army books coming out. Now according to a list found on belloflostsouls.com it says we can expect Space Marines and Tyranids for sure coming out later this year for 40k which led to us thinking of the Imperial Guard and other armies and what we hope they will bring. I mention this because though the new book is good, alot of IG players I have met feel that the 4th/5th edition version of our codex was much better in capturing the flavor of the Imperial Guard. I am just curious to see what fellow IG players, and their opponents would like to see changed or added into the new book . Me for example:

-Bring back the doctrines but do it to allow lists like the Elysians, Death Korps and Armored Battle Group for example to be run without the worry of someone crying about forgeworld. The Imperial Guard are supposed to have millions of regiments and doing something like this would allow Guard players the options of choosing such a list. I realize the current book allows this on a limited scale but I am suggesting taking away those limitations and adding other restrictions (like the Elysians for example, cannot take any treaded vehicles). I for one miss the ability to deepstrike my veterans.

-Make all the other Guard Regiments available via finecast. GW would not even have to mass produce them. They could make them mail order only but allowing the option for IG players to run other regiments besides Cadians would be a nice change of pace.

-Point tweaks, like every book thats been redone so far I could see alot of point changes going either up or down, I for one would like to see a decrease for the veteran doctrine options (forward sentires, demolitions and grenadiers) should not be 30pts. for an upgrade.

-Since every army is getting a shiny new toy as well I could see something along the lines of a "super heavy" tank being able to be played during normal games or even another flier like the vulture gunship with punisher cannons.

(*Note this is NOT a "Guard suck and need better stuff" thread, its just a thread to see what IG players and others think would either be cool ideas to add into or things that need to be changed/removed for when the new book drops*).

I agree, a points increase on the vendetta. Probably reduce or remove the transport capacity too. It really should be a gunship, not a transport.

As for my wishlist, all I really want is a co-ax stubber option for vanquisher tanks.

I think the Vendetta should stay as it is, but with a 40-50pt price increase. I love that it's a transport.

I'd like to see Stormtroopers worthwhile outside the meltacide role. I want to use them, but they are just too expensive for what they do, especially when Vets are just plain better.

A sniper character would be cool, but it'd feel too much like Telion and so probably won't happen. Although making the characters other than Marbo or Pask actually worth taking would be fantastic.

I agree as well. Make Valkyrie the transport option, and make the vendetta a dedicated gunship. Just add a little piece of fluff that says the transport space got taken up by all the reactors required to keep 6 lascannons running as well as keep that tub in the air. If that happened the vendetta wouldn't need a huge price difference, but I think it would help pull it into line. It's still the equivalent of a flying tank, but we're IG, everything we have are tanks.

Also, NO SUPER HEAVY IN THE MAIN CODEX. Super heavies are in apocalypse for a reason. The Imperial Guard does not need a riptide equivalent that costs 80 dollars. The Imperial Guard is known for hordes of cheaper, effective units, not having one super unit that is the focal point of the army. Leave the Baneblades for apocalypse. I could maybe see allowing the Malcador, but even that is pushing it.

As for the 4/5th codex vs the current one, I've never seen the old one, so I can comment. I would like to see a lot more flavor in the next IG codex though, and most importantly, better internal balance. The current codex is crap for this. Literally every slot we have a God tier, a good tier, and a fail tier choice. You can tell how hardcore the player's list is purely by unit selection, and that's ridiculous.

Finally, IG needs a trick to make horde infantry, or really any primarily infantry list, feasible without allies. Perhaps some sort of "without number'' rule for conscripts, where the opponent has to roll to see if they run out of ammo every time they shoot at a group over 30 men in size. Maybe allow us to take penal legion for cheaper and in greater numbers (seriously, give me a 1-2 point reduction in price per man and let me take up to 30-40 per unit and they would be a really handy unit. Let me choose the ability they take, and they'll be my favorite) Maybe allow Chenkov to give his Send in the Next Wave to platoon infantry squads. I don't know, but we just need something. We don't have the inherent toughness of orks to make it across the board (or their KFF) and we don't have the endlessly respawning fearless gribblies ability of the tyranids to get our infantry across the table either. We're left with an army that should be known for it's endless supply of troops being known for being the ultimate henchman provider service instead. Ideally, make this rule that gives the IG infantry their ability to cross the table pure IG only (doesn't work with allies), since allies make their infantry strong enough already. Say that since the force is split between two armies, the Imperial Guard can't commit their full power to the battle or something, I don't care.

CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT!

Vox Casters should increase command range, not just make it re-rollable.

I'd use more orders if they could be given beyond shouting range.

Also the Leman Russ Lumbering Behemoth, just let us shoot our normal guns and Ordnance... I might even take sponsons again.

I also agree with most all of what MrMoustaffa said. If my men die in droves they should have something that keeps them going.

I would like to see more options for altering the force organisation chart - eg stormtroopers or rough riders as troops. More options for themed armies, eg making whole command squads and platoons 'penal legion troops' or 'grenadiers' or 'jungle fighters'. Honestly that seems a little unlikely the way rules are going, and it would be very hard to balance. Some expansion of the current upgrades veterans have (grenadiers/demolitions/forward sentries) to apply to command squads and platoons would be doable though.

Would love to see another, non-transport flyer option, new vehicle designs, plastic stormtroopers. Maybe options for feral/close combat oriented guard?

There is probably space for an elite stealth/infiltrate type squad now that veterans are troops - currently the only real way to do this is harker+forward sentries. Give me some infiltration and sniper options that aren't weirdo space hobbits!

Also agree with the above that special characters (and plenty of other units) need better internal balance - it is really clear now that some units are awesome while their direct competition is crap!

And yeah, voxes need a better purpose - infinite range makes a lot more sense than re-rolls.

Also return of 'Lumbering Behemoth', vandetta point increase, useful ogryns, cheaper hellhounds, cadian rough riders, plastic mordians and vostroyans...
Another thing is making sentinels useful. I came up with an idea: 1 non-scout, non-armoured sentinel added to infantry platoon for 30 points. This way they don't compete with fliers for fast attack slot. They act as support/charge blocker. What do you think?

I play Guard, and I want Vendettas nerfed to heck.

Apart from that, I think the Doctrine system was rather cool, and I'd like to see it return. I'd particularly like to see Orders that are linked to doctrines to further customize your capabilities. I'd also really like to see the Elite section get a thorough revamp, as I've never seriously considered fielding any of them. In particular I think Stormtroopers should be a bigger deal.

Veterans might need somewhat of a nerf. One of the major reasons Stormtroopers get no love is that Vets do pretty much everything they do better. Perhaps make taking a doctrine mandatory (obviously needs a different name if the old doctrine system returns), offer a few more options for the doctrines, and increase their points commensurately.

Stormtroopers = Kasrkin. For all intents and purposes they're the same thing, but one is Cadian specific. If I recall correctly, they were pretty much exactly the same as stormtroopers in the the Codex: Eye of Terror, except they could be taken as troops.

Doctrines and a stormtrooper buff and vendetta nerf are my biggest hopes.

After that, a new plastic troop kit that isn't feth-ugly, and plastic stormtroopers, though preferably following the Kasrkin aesthetic; I don't like the stormtrooper molds myself, but that might just be due to to their low quality compared to Kasrkin.

I'd also like to see the basilisk be more affordable; the manticore really does render it useless unless you're using FW rules, and can take the cheaper fixed artillery.

Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
IG are pretty good right now, so the things I want to see are fairly minor. The last thing I want is a complete Tau-style redesign of the army, especially around a markerlight-style gimmick. So:

1) An explicit statement at the beginning of the codex saying "Forge World's IG models, rules, and army lists are 100% official and part of this codex, if your opponent refuses to play against them you have our permission to punch them in the face for being TFG."

2) An option to take a storm trooper or rough rider CCS upgrade which makes the appropriate unit troops.

3) The old lumbering behemoth rule back for LRBTs so they can fire their ordnance turret weapon and still use the sponson and hull guns at full BS.

4) The old direct fire rule for ordnance barrage weapons so the Basilisk can fire as a normal gun within 36".

5) The ability to have squads in Chimeras contest and claim objectives, and receive orders. We aren't marines, IG mech troops are supposed to fight from inside their transports.

6) A major point increase for the Vendetta to reflect its significant increase in power in 6th.

 MrMoustaffa wrote:

It's way too late for that. The Vendetta should have been a plastic Vulture kit instead of a Valkyrie upgrade, but now that we have the model we're stuck with it. And the model very clearly has the lascannons powered by external battery packs and the exact same transport compartment as the Valkyrie. So you can plausibly increase the point cost (and should), but you can't remove the transport capacity or change the guns.

Yes stats are the same, but kasrkin look much cooler than chunky stormtroopers (the need to be remade in plastic too).

Commisar lords, primmaris psykers, priests and techpriests should be buffed. They all have cool models that never appear on the board.

Options for Ogryns (I want the Bone'ead to have a massive Eviscerator!). They should also be able to have one Ogryn for every 3 in the squad equip a loud "Dakka" thing (Autocannon), and add relentless. Reduce base points cost 5-10 points.

Rough Riders durability improved or cost reduced. IC/CCS can be mounted.

More units with access to doctrines (tailored by unit type).

I also like the Platoon being able to have a sentinel attached.

Sentinel squadron size increased to 5, base points decreased to ~30 points. Also, give them back chainsaw CCW to add an attack and increase strength.

Edit: Sentinel CCW

We'll find out soon enough eh.

The ability to field specialist formations - there are supposedly vast amounts of variation in the Guard, but the Codex doesn't show that at all.

Keep the basic framework that exists now; Infantry Squad, Vet Squad, Heavy Weapon Squad, Rough Rider Squad - but give them all a wide range of upgrades and ways to move them around the FoC. If I go with a Veteran army, my Heavy Weapon Squads shouldn't have bog-standard BS. If I decide to field a cavalry army, I should be able to have Veteran Rough Riders and upgrade my HWTs with mounted crew that give them extra movement.

But lets be honest here, what's actually going to happen is we'll get stuck with the same proportionally-bloated Cadian and Catachan plastics, Mech-vets, Infantry-spam, and Russ-spam will continue to be the only viable lists, and there'll be some kind of fugly extra-large dual-kit that costs an arm & a leg and just happens to have the best rules in the codex.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
