Chosen are built now

They're made with the bitz from 5 normal chaos marines and 5 posessed, all mixed together. The standard is the tops of 2 of the khorne standards, I just cut one in half so I could make a complete circle

Next on the list is the defiler... will take a little while though since there's gonna be a good bit of greenstuffing, and holiday stuff taking up too much time

I think I'll just use these as spawns and instead of having 2 obliterators in the army I'll replace them with a vindicator.. I have 3 of them from a linebreaker squadron so this way I'll get to use one in my 2000 pt games There's plenty of other spawn heads and other bitz though so maybe if I do get the metal obliterators eventually I can still covert em up with lots of tallons and other stuff.

I don't think you should give up on this Obliterator idea just yet, I think you just need to overhaul the concept a bit.

The issue, IMHO is that you've basically just glued guns onto a spawn model, which looks pretty bad. What you need to do is chop off the ends of the arms/tentacles, then chop the guns you're going to use up and just use the barrels of the gun and then use green stuff from the end of the tentacle/arm to make it look like the gun barrel is mutating out of the tentacle/arm.

That way, it doesn't look like the gun is just glued onto the spawn model but rather the gun is morphing out of the Spawn's arms, which is closer (in my mind) to what you are going for.

yeah I think I just wasn't ready for a big conversion project. So I made them normal spawns for now. When I finish everything else and get a few games in if I decide I wanna try obliterators I may go back to it.

Another idea I had though was to try and make something like a mini tank full of all kinds of guns all over the place, with a little traitor guard gunner.. so it wouldn't just be a fat marine with a lot of guns.

For now though I just wanna get everything I have built so I can start playing a few games

Another thing to keep in mind with the obliterators is to try and avoid sticking on weapons they can't take anymore. It might be confusing to some who only know the new codex.

I really like the idea of the mini-tank too, only without a traitor guardsmen make it more like the "daemon tank" they showed in the Codex Daemons preview. That might hit the spawn-defiler mark a little better.

yeah.. that might be a little too fleshy though if you meant the demon engine sketch.. i was thinking something more robotic looking.. or to go with the fluff for the army better, possibly a mini-defiler but using something like a TK scorpion as a base. I'm already planning to use a converted TK bone giant as a greater demon and skeletons as lesser demons, by the time I get around to that though I'm hoping the new VC skeletons will be out

Or if I don't do the TK scorpion I may try something more like the scorpion heavy destroyer I did for my necrons back in the day..

Only I'd make take out the necron body and make it something more chaosy. Might even be able to get away with using a plastic marine or terminator body.. hmm...

I started building my defiler last night. I hope I can pull off the hellcannon conversion, the cannon itself is almost the same size as the main body part, i'm starting to worry that it'll look silly :( I'm going to try and build the normal battle cannon housing around the back of the hellcannon, hopefully that'll bring it all together.

Happy new year!

Been a while, holidays kept me real busy.

I have my defiler mostly done. The weapons are held on with blue stuff at the moment and I still have some more things to do like possibly try and sculpt a face on the hellhammer cannon top. Not sure what to do with the weapons. I'm planning to play it as all close combat, but i need something to stick on the sides. Only other thought I had was to bitz order another leg sprue and give him 6 legs, then attach the claw arms to the sides? I really don't like the snakey mace head thing so I doubt I'll be using that. I'm also going to greenstuff the hellcannon skull to the top a bit more, right now it's also just stuck on with blue stuff. And lastly I did the hellhammer cannon swap there because I just wanted something beefier looking. Also, I have the top attached with magnets, just drilled a hole into the base that it attaches to, so now I can take it apart to transport easier. It wobbles a bit though, so I will prolly use pins somehow too. ANyway, here's some pics I'll probably be doing the gluing tomorrow. And I still haven't decided on the flamers on the left or the autocannons.. it's all just for looks anyway, since it's going to be loaded for close combat...

Wadaya think?

The pose reminds me of the DOW Defiler which can only be a good thing. I do not think you have to change the cannon.

I took one of the "melty face" plates from my land raider bitz, it was a perfect fit for the square top of the cannon barrel, so now it looks more chaossy

I glued it all together last night. I went with the autocannons and the missiles, I doubt anyone I play with will mind me playing it as all close combat instead. And yeah I wanted a more dynamic kind of pose, like it's about to turn around and blast somehting.

So next on the list is my demon prince. Started putting him together last night. I have a set of belakor wings I was going to add to him but I'm starting to think they might be a little too thin & small. Also trying to think of ways I might be able to make some kind of a jump pack instead of wings, but I think in the end I'm prolly just gonna build him as is.

DP jump pack you say? Here's Migsula's IW DP for inspiration, should you need it ...

Like the defiler's huggy pose, nice choice on the head too. Only thing that struck me was that his gun looked a little ... flacid
Guessing with some glue this might change, or it might just be how big the suppresor on the end is compared to the barrel.

I like the main canons projectory, it looks like it's hitting something on the table.
things like baslisks look like they are aiming at some twenty tables away! this is is why I quite liked the apoc senario in the last white dwarf with the support battery on a separate table board.

that said I never liked the defiler model, I have high hopes for the unbound defiler and demonic engines...

Yeah I was thinking he'd be aiming at a little marine in front of him or something

That jump pack DP looks awesome. But I don't have the slightest idea how I'd put something like that together. My sculpting skills are limited to joint filling and smooth alien heads. Every time I tried something more advanced, it ended in disaster.

I was thinking though, something kind of rounded like a dreadnought arm or lower legs might work for the jet parts. I have an old metal landspeeder in pieces, so I may pull that out and see if I can get that to work somehow.

I glued the DP together already though, but he won't be painted for a while so it won't be a big deal to rip off his skull thingies and add the jets on later. Trying to get everything built now cuz it's been in boxes far too long. Got a land raider and 3 vindicators to do. I thought about going with 2 vindicators, and one of those new land raider aires Apocalypse tanks, and a rhino. But I dunno what I'd rather have in Apocalpyse.. the 3 vindicators or the ares..? hmm....

Speaking of Migs's DP, I'm trying to do something similar and running into the same problem... I'm thinking of paying a trip to a hobby shop and seeing if I can't find a cheap model of something like an SR-71, F-18, F-15, or similar to use the intakes and exhausts.

So I had a bit of a forced break trying to get my house all fixed up so I can sell it.. things are calming down now and I can finally get back to working on finishing the army.. or at least build everything so I can get some games in while I finish painting over the next couple months.

Anyhoo... I have a few things left on the list, namely a land raider and one of those 3 vindicator packs for Apocalypse.

so now I'm wondering how I wanna build em? I really like the look of the land raider ares .. so I was thinking I could do 1 ares, 2 vindicators and 1 rhino to transport my berzerkers. What would be cooler for apocalypse though? 3 vindicators or 1 ares? I was just kind of thinking if I really wanted to have 3 vindicators, all it's gonna take is a glance on one of them and they can't combine shots anymore. ... but then, I could use the normal LR in normal games.. I wouldn't use the ares too much in normal games. And I play more normal games than apocalypse just because my group meets once a month and we usually keep games around 2000 pts so we can all play a few instead of one big one.

so on one hand, I might get more use out of 1 LR and 3 Vindicators, but I like the look of the Ares and I think it'd be a fun conversion... so, what do you guys think I should do?

hehe yeah I'm starting to think that too now.. I had wanted to do a transport for the berzerkers and even the regular marines but I already have so much other stuff to finish building. so I think for big games if I have the 1 LR and 3 Vindicators, if I really want a transport for the zerkers I can use my old marine rhinos as proxies

I think I want to paint the tanks to look all banged up, muddy and rusted.. kinda like iron warriors might be but without the caution stripes, like they were originally painted in that bone color, but most of it is worn & rusted off by now. kinda like this, only rustier Also planning to go back and do a lot of weathering and stuff to the power armor on the marines too, eventually.

So, I'm just about finished building my land raider. I keep finding imperial symbols that I gotta carve and file off :(

After that I have those 3 Vindicators to do.

Nothing new painted and won't be for a while, currently living with a relative while my house is being sold and I don't wanna go too crazy making a big mess and stuff. So that will all have to wait for my new place completely with it's very own warhammer basement! muhaha

Anyway, once that's done... I've been thinking about demons, what with the new models coming out. Will Marines be able to use those new demons as allies, kinda like demonhunters and guard/marines can be allies? Can I take a unit of bloodletters, or am I stuck with generic demons?

My first idea was to get some new demons and give them square bases so I can use them in WFB also. But then I was thinking, with the whole bone theme, maybe I should use the new VC skeletons as my demons? But then what about other VC stuff? Ghouls? Zombies? What would be cooler? regular demons or undeady kinda stuff?

You're stuck with generic ones, unless they pull some crazy sh!t just before print time and ally those demons in. Though here I note that generic demons are pretty useful for 13 points a pop - I've been taking a squad of 10-12 "lesser demonettes" for the last 10 or so games and they consistently do great things for me. Seen greater generic demons ruin people's parades too, 100 points for a MC all of a sudden is great fun.

I liked your idea to use skeletons as lesser and bone giant as greater demons. Only gets into trouble if you're actually wanting to use these 'demons' as VC too, not TK - I guess a bone giant could be a varghulf but that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth "counts as"-wise.

well I don't have a VC army and doubt I ever will.. TKs on the other hand ... I would prolly wanna use that bone giant for them too. I guess I could just keep him on the square base... or rig up something with magnets on the feet and give him swappable bases.. won't be a big deal with 1 but it would suck doing it for all the little guys

So I'm finally moving on these guys again. I have my chosen all primed and ready to be painted..

So here's what my regular marines are like..

I'm starting to think now that I might not want to do the chosen exactly the same, I really want to be able to tell them apart on the battlefield better. I want to keep the bone color theme going. I could make all their trim gold, but I think that might be too fancy, since the chosen are more chaossy. I was starting to think what if I went for more like a flesh color with them? Or should I try and paint their armor with darker brown lines, kind of like the way folks paint nid shells and stuff, like this fella did? wadayas think?

I'd go with the darker brown lines.

Although, I have no idea why it would be difficult to tell the Chosen apart... one of them has a mouth for a chest!

Necros wrote:OK here is my first test model. I still have a few more metalic spots to paint but he's mostly done. I was going to paint lines along the edges of the bone color like the way folks paint nid shells and stuff like that, but I got lazy, and also I liked the shading as is. I made a wash out of Dark Flesh using the same water & matte medium mix I used for my Baneblade.

I'm not sure if I'm totally sold on the black trim after all though. I'm wondering if maybe I should have done it blood red? I was also thinking gold, but I think it would make the whole thing look too "brown" ... or does the black have enough contrast between the gold color to make it stand out?

Anyway, wadaya think?

Nice. I am doing a similar color combo on mine... the bone is more of a dirty grey, but the end result is like that. Light neutral colors are dead sexy next to bolt gun metal for some reason.

What about swapping the bone armor and the red bolter / detail color, making them red armor + bone guns / details? Your red is so rich that they should REALLY stand out and look pretty fantastic

Well here's the first painted chosen.. was kind of a test I guess... I'm going to keep em all like this.. the gold does help them stand out, plus the mutations that will all be red like that hand is.

here's a bad pic with the flash on

And with the flash off next to a regular marine for comparison

Hopefully I can get some better lighting going and I'll take some pics when I get the rest all done

Very nice Necros, glad to see you continue your work on these guys. It's funny, after reading this I pulled out the Chaos I have and started to think about paint schemes. Can't really decide one something though. Anyways, I like the picking out of just the mutated parts, makes it seem a bit more realistic but maintaining that flesh equipment melding feel.

Whats the formula for your red btw, if you don't mind me asking?
