small update.. got 6 chosen done so far, except for the bases.. gonna do them at the very end when I finish painting the other 4

and some closer up pics

I'm doing all the horns and stuff as pure black to kind of contrast the bone armor, instead of making the horns boney too and just having it all blend in.. and I also have the eyes as pure black also. But now I'm starting to wonder if maybe I should do the crab claw hands in black too. I'm making the fingers and "skin" parts a bloody purpley color, so i'm wondering if the black will just seem like "too much" if I paint the claws like that... guess I'll see when I get the other 4 done...

Whew. Finally finished my chosen. Took a lot longer to paint since i painted all the trim and everything this time instead of just solid bone like the normal marines, and those posessed models have tons of detail mixed in all over.

Next on the list will be either my terminators or plague marines. Haven't decided. Will be a few days before I can spray-prime anything cuz it's gonna be real humid the rest of the week :( damn philly summers... So in the meantime, I'll be building some Skorne stuff for Hordes

But anyway here's some pics..

Nice - I really like how cohesive you've kept all the models. A lot of Chaos armies look very slapped together, but you've got a really solid theme that ties them all together nicely.

Mighty fine freaky marines you've got there, well done on the whole squad

I hear you on possessed detail, spent yesterday looking at my possessed and deciding I didn't really want them in my army now after all. Also, seconded on the Philly humidity right now, though no excuse for me as I've got a lot of presprayed stuff already (read: possessed )

I forgot I have my beastman charriot and some minotaurs primed, so I'll prolly switch gears and start on them while I wait for some better weather.. maybe I'll do an all day primer fest and prime all the stuff I have on the list

Wow! Chaotic, but with a consistant color-scheme to keep it looking like an army. Great job.

Quick update.. cuz I love the new washes!!

started on my plague marines last night, here's a sample..

The guy on the right isn't washed yet but you can really see what a difference the washes make. All I did was use straight up undiluted Rotting Flesh right out of the pot, and red on the hoses. Then I coated the whole thing with the Devlan Mud wash. I made my own washes for my other marines but I think from now on I'm just gonna use GW's

Anyway after they're all washed I'm gonna drybrush bleached bone all over to tie em in with the other marines, but still have a greenish nurgley hint to em.

Plague marines done!

I did these with the new washes.. like the post above, base color was rotten flesh, with a wash of devlan mud, then light drybrush dusting of bleached bone. You can't tell in the pics i don't think but for the blades I did a light wash of snakebite leather and some splotches of vomit brown to give em more of a rusted look.

I gotta get me a better camera, and some better lighting too :(

yeah I tried to tone it down a bit.. so i jst did the the brass on the exteded top parts of the shoulder pads and a few little spots on the bolters or knife/sword handles. I did that with brass, then devlan mud wash, then light drybrush of boltgun metal for some highlights

nice army, the models are so good looking but their realy simple wich is hard to pull of, it realy worked for this army though and they have a cohesive look to them. i like the plauge marines but it looks like your commander made them take a bath or something, have them jump in some mud or pus or something! lol good army!

Wow man, this army is looking very nice. Excellent colour choices really stand out well, and the base contrasts nicely, keeping the look going. I'd love to see this one on the table!

thanks

taking a break right now and getting my skorne titan cannoneer done since he was in pieces and I wanna play with him.. next on the list will be my demon prince he's just going to be the standard one, no fancy conversion or anything.. that's one model I really love just as is. I will probably give him a bigger base though, not a fan of the toes hanging over the edge look

Had a pretty boring weekend, so I was able to get a lot of stuff done. Finished my demon prince tonight, here he is.

he's one of my favorite models, so I didn't wanna convert him.. just painted him up as is. Can't really tell from my sucky pics, but the sword is black but I drybrushed it with rotten flesh and then washed with thraka green, kinda looks like the raised areas are glowing a dull green

Next I will be tackling my defiler. I ordered some extra leg bitz from the warstore, so he's gonna have 6 regular defiler legs, and then I'll give him the claw arms connected to the cannon part for 2 CC weapons.

Beaut of a DP, and I agree the model is great without conversions. Way to be on the bigger base too, the man deserves it. Oh, nice work on the plaguers as well, though I keep thinking the new wash isn't as nice - not as dark, they seem "washed out" :S - as the stuff you used on the older marines. But go fig.

yeah my photo taking just sucks.. they're not that light looking in person.. they look a lot like the other marines, only there's a slight green tint to em.. but that wash I made is much darker, I actually do the wash, then use some watered down bleached bone to go back and paint the bone color back on, leaving the wash in the cracks.

Brilliant! Love the conversions on the Chosen in particular. Where did you get those cloven feet?
I personally think you could have converted the DP, but what the hey.
You make my Black Legion look so boring...

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Those cloven feet and the other claws and mutated bitz are all from the new CSM Posessed models, I just took the bitz for 5 posessed and mixed them with 5 regular marines and that's how I got the chosen

So, now I'm moving on to the defiler.

changed it a bit from those earlier pics, I popped off the helcannon skull bit and decided to put missiles up there, if anything just for looks. I was going to try the autocannons, but it just didn't look right.

I bitz ordered a sprue of defiler legs from the warstore so I could have 6 of the regular legs on the bottom, and I'll use the 2 claw legs as CCW arms. I had some spare marine tank bitz, so I made 2 hatches with the doors shut, but reversed so it would be flat. Added in some spikes, and then I cut the ball at the end of the claw arms in half. These will get glued to those flat hatches.. but I think I may paint it first and glue them on after, just so it will be easier to paint. I still want to see if I can rig up some kind of "shoulder pad" so it doesn't just look like half a ball glued to the side. I might mess with some plasticard and see what I come up with.

here's kind of what he'll look like when done.

The top is too heavy with the claws now, I had to hold it up to take the pic so I'm gonna have to do some pinning in addition to the magnet. I still want the top removable so I can transport it easier. And, here's a shot of where I cut the arm and how I did the hatch on the side to attach it to..

wadaya think?

here's a quick pic of the first leg

I'm painting him in pieces so I can get to all the nooks & crannies easier. This was a test for the weathering, etc, but I think this is how I'll do em all. So all 6 legs and 2 claws, lower body and upper body all separate. I will probably just do them 1 at a time instead of assembly line too so I can focus on the details more.

I was thinking of doing all my marines with the chipped paint look like this, but I was afraid it would take too long so I skipped the step. I might go back and do it still though, at the end when everything else is all done.

For the rust on the metal parts I just did small washes of watered down snakebite leather, vomit brown and dark flesh, and just kind of splotched it on. For the chips I just did boltgun metal, followed by an inner bit of mithril silver, then outlined with dark flesh.. but I think going forward it might come out better if I do it in reverse and start with the dark flesh, then boltgun then mithril.

gonna take a while to finish this guy though :(

Thanks working on my terminators now, should hopefully be done this weekend if I get enough spare time. Got all the base colors on and washed em tonight, so it's just details and bases now

after that I'll have 1 land raider and 3 vindicators to do then I'll be done Have to see if I can find a good spray paint that will be close to bleached bone for those tanks.

So, after my terminators are done, I'm going to have my land raider and 3 vindicators to paint then I'll be done with all I initially bought for the army. So the whole collection is:

1 demon prince, 1 term lord (I will prolly just use him as an extra terminator though), 10 marines, 10 chosen, 7 plague marines, 8 khorne zerkers, 5 terminators, 1 defiler, 1 land raider and 3 vindicators.

For expanding I'm thinking of 1 more box of marines and later one 1 more box of terminators so I can have assault terminators w/ all lightning claws and shooty ones, and probably a sorceror.

But I think I also want to include some demons in the army. But not any of the GW demons really. The fluff I have in my head is they're kind of like an undead sort of force... their leader is a necromancer kinda guy who likes to bring dead stuff back to life with the help of some chaos magic. So I was thinking instead of "demons" I'd go with undead things to count as lesser demons. But I'm not sure what I want to do for them. Skeletons? Zombies? Ghouls? I thought of trying to mix some catchatans with zombies, but I don't think I'd want to give them guns. Or, another thought was to get a unit or 2 of the FW renegade militia models with the close combat weapon arms, and then use those as my demons... just because the models look so cool and I need an excuse to buy them :p

Any ideas?

I think the plastic Ghouls will be a good place to start - they're modeled looking like they're charging forward which I think better captures the look of Tzeentch Horrors and Daemonettes.
