Vendettas are a FA slot choice, not Heavy slot choice.

Hydras seem great but I think I'd rather have a HWS with AC. Same price, same equivalent firepower (6 AC vs 4 TL AC = 3 hits each). Durability is probably about the same considering the Hydra is on a 12/10/10 chassis and HWS are in cover.

So do you want a scoring unit or the ability to ignore cover saves for a few units?

that's the beauty of the IG, they are potentialy cheap enough to have both.
but given your question, i'd rather have the Hydra. you breath hard enough on a HWS and they can go away.

Yeah, using Heavy Weapon Squads really well requires a CCS designed with them in mind. I run my CCS with Kell, so the orders are reliable and so are their morale checks. In this current list, take two Hydras.

Really it depends on what MC you're shooting at, what kind of armor save they have, and what kind of invulnerable save they have. Let me crunch some numbers for you. Not gonna do the method that accounts for point cost because it's more complicated, but rather just show 1 vendetta vs. 2 hydras. Keep in mind that the hydras in this example cost more and so when they come out even that means the vendetta is actually ahead.
Those are good numbers Culler.
I am curious to know what the results are if you grant a 4+ cover save vs. the Vendetta shots. In other words, when shooting at a Carnifex that is screened by other 'nids, what are the odds like?

Just halve whatever the unsaved number is. For shooting at a carnifex it becomes .93 to the hydras' 1.33. It will probably be rare for a carnifex to get the necessary 50% screen from a vendetta though because it's mounted up so high on its base. Pretty much whenever an MC gets a good cover or invulnerable save the vendetta ceases being top dog. The mobility and high vantage point of the vendetta make cover less likely for big things, however.
