But the thing is, they've got the Ascension book coming out which allows you to play as Inquisitors, Interregators and all the people who stood alongside Eisenhorn (for example) in the novels.

That book addresses those issues... we don't need a whole re-vamp of the game.

That said I'm not convinced that either are a 'board game' ala Warhammer Quest.

Wait a minute - 5.5 KG.

Boxed games don't weigh that much.

I worked for two weeks in the GW Mail Order room and no way does a boxed game weigh 5.5 KG.

However - Plastic Thunderhawk might do.

RT characters are supposed to be more powerful than DH ones, always have been. The system has always been intended to be a three tier thing with people starting off in RT and as they get more powerful (using Ascension), switch over to RT and then onto the third, as yet unwritten, third level which introduces Marines and really high level stuff.

Maybe thats what they intended when they started out but I've since heard that while the games are similar they aren't immediately cross compatible either.

On this mystery box thing, I really don't want it to be cool. I don't want it to be a success. If it is GW will just have the crazy notion of doing this with every major release, and become even more tight lipped. Fuel to their fires on keeping quiet.

But why would "Space Hulk" ( a very popular game back in the day) be a limited run? Why would any company limit sales of something that just about Every single 40K fan would buy? Hell if they are Ubar versions with molded floorplates and decent mini's, lots of players would buy multiple copys, both for playing SpaceHulk and added terrain and mini's to their armys(if you are building Deathwing or Nids, you know what I mean).
Fine you want to churn up excitment about the project. But dont you think you will anger more of your customer base than please it, if you limited the sales and a large number of people that want it cant get it. I think that along with some of their other decisions lately might hurt the company in the long run.
Its one thing to make a limited run of a single mini(like the Black Library special editions), not everyone would want it.
So mabye if it is SpaceHulk, these come with some limited mini or something extra and then the basic game will come out later.
Just to conjecter some more.. What does "Everything you have been told is a Lie!" have to do with "SpaceHulk"? If this tag line actually has anything to do with the Mystery box, I dont see how they fit together(if it is indeed SH). To me it seems more of an Inqisition tag line, or mabye a Dark Angel or Chaos.
Anyway.. I guess we will all find out in a day or two.

I'm not sure if this is the right place on the forum, if not I apologise!

T'other day whilst mooching around in my local GW my Missus had the forethough to grab my shoulder and point at the PC Monitor. Upon it was an open copy of Photoshop with a poster stating "Congratulations, you guessed correctly; the mystery box is "Space Hulk"". Wording may have been different, but I noticed Space Hulk and Mystery Box and as I gasped with the knowledge the Emperor saw fit to grant me the GW employee looked around and angrily closed the program.

Unfortunately I've not had time to post this since that day, but for any who are desperate for confirmation I reckon that's the best we'll get before the announcement (oh ye of little patience, haha!).

Cheers,

Except that's not true and never has been.

It was never intended to be a tiered system, and rules compatabilitya side there is no direct rule or idea to let you transport your character from one setting to another.

And there is no reason why an ex guardsman who happens to be in the retinue of a RT is or has to be more powerful than one who hangs with an Inquisitor either.

There is no need for a store to have PS, all propaganda will come preprinted from HQ and most corporate PC's are locked down so that employees can't load unlicensed software that could put the company in disrepute, Also dodgy software could crash the computer costing the company money...

Last time Space Hulk was on shelves, it was a pretty limited run. I don't remember the exact stretch of time, but it was relatively short.

That said, I hope it's not Space Hulk. I have fond memories of the game but feel like I've been there and done that already. They can pretty it up all they want but lumbering around spaceship corridors, hunting aliens only has so much lasting appeal... Especially when we've already done it.

I wish they'd do something new... Or better yet, stop dicking around with side projects and finish the 5th ed codices!

You can't spell 'slaughter' without 'laughter'.

Who says the computer had Photoshop loaded? Who says what he saw was actually photoshop. He said he didn't see it for very long.

The stuff I've seen on GW computer screens is usually their own software, and standard E-mail. Nothing to say that the picture couldn't've been opened in any of them.

Well im not gonna read through this many pages to find out what has been speculated on but i will take a stab at it.

I am in agreement with its a Plastic Thunderhawk. The bastions, barricades, blastscape and such all were first revealed in the 5th ED. BRB. The only thing not in there was the Ironclad oh and the lanspeeder storm. What they do have in there is a picture of a thunderhawk so i am thinking that most everything being released was already being made. That was probably a prototype. To be honest Space Marines havent gotten their Superheavy yet. IG, ORKs have but space marines need one for Apoc.

So i vote Thunderhawk. And the weight sounds about right.

Some random thoughts.......

Lets say it's Space Hulk and it's a board game with everything you need in it to play straight out of the box...

Will the minis be slot together ones or will there be glue also be in the box?
How about paint?
Or will this be an opportunity to push the GW hobby ala "You can play Space Hulk straight away with the minatures provided however GW stocks a vast selection of paints and hobby materials allowing you to customise your models............"

Will this be marketed as a mainstream boardgame for kids or as a prodeuct for those already into the hobby?

I know he said it was Photoshop, but he only saw it for a second. It could have been anything. It could have been an attachment in an E-mail that opened in paint for all we know.

Point is I don't think that the legitimacy of this story hangs on the notion that he saw it on a program that shouldn't've been there.

According to the interview the D6G guys did with the FFG guys, it sounds like there's potential for RT to have some interesting narrative frameworks as the PCs are kind of the 'representatives' of the larger ship's crew.

The way it sounded to me, a PC in the Rogue Trader profession is a Rogue Trader, and the primary member of his family expected to gt off his noble butt and actually do something to pay for everyone else's decadent lifestyle. The AdMech is the guy sent from the ship's complement to liaise with the command crew and represent the acolytes working at countless places on the kilometer-long ship the party is in charge of. The warrior-types are experts drawn from the ship's guards to act as bodyguards, master strategists, pilots, etc.

If the RT dies, well, maybe Uncle Ed or Little Timmy steps up to the plate. The AdMech guy takes a bolt pistol to the head, another may be sent up. if a profession is unfilled, things could get interesting. No warrior-types is one thing, but if there's no RT maybe the PCs ahve to deal with being the representatives of an 'absentee owner'... No AdMech might signal that the ship has somehow offended that group, and getting repairs and upgrades may be difficult.

A lot of this is how I'd run it as described by the FFG whose name I can't remember... it also provides a lot of narrative room to explain changes in the 'cast' as characters get killed or move on.

Do you mean like a parody or annotated version? Like they took the rules and scribbled "I'm not sure why we did this" on them?

I actually suggested up-thread that the mythological '40k Advanced' ruleset would theoretically fit the specifications... New rules for an existing game that don't supersede current rules would fit the specs.

Of course, I'm doubtful of quality if developed in secret and if it would be maintained for long or if it would fall by the wayside.

Maybe it is a device that activates all your GW mini's and they come out at night and destroy all other companies mini's in your collection and piss on your board games. Yeah, that's it - not unlikely at all. GW always said they were going to take over the world.

Maybe it is a copy of an animated film they have been secretly working on for ages. Big heroic marines, good but do evil deeds inquisitors, frightened but resolute in the face of the enemy guardsmen, girly eldar whining about how they ruled the universe but lost it all and are on an EMO kick. Chaos might be in it, very generic bad guys & the audience uses the spike to tell the difference between them and the good blue marines. No DE though.

QFT...

GW stores do not have Photoshop on their pc's and GW do make all their own promotional material at Lenton.

Secondly...

For this box set to actually weigh in at 5.5 KG or 12 Lbs to us imperialists, there has to be a rulebook at least the size of the 40k rulebook in hard back, and the amount of models in the box on the scale of WHQ. That box weighed in at a fair amount and even then it wasn't 5.5 KG.

If this is Space Hulk, i'll be incredibly surprised.

I'm still leery about the "limited edition" status of the Mystery Box. If it's all metal minis, then I could see that as a possibility, but with plastic you have to have very large runs to make the cost of the molds back.

I'll bet the contents will be available at a later date too if they're plastic.
