I really love your marbling technique. It's good to see you making progress on this mammoth build, phutarf. One commentary I would make is that the tiles around the crater would actually be thrown in all directions by the power of the bomb blast. Unless what you're implying is that the crater is actually the mouth of an underground tunnel (like a drilling machine came up from below), those tiles would actually end up in the farthest corners of that ruin.

It's good to be back on this (I think..). Regards the crater, it is supposed to be blast damage, and when finished (HA!) there will be cracked and thrown tiles all over, possibly some embedded in walls etc - however, I'm having to use a modicum of poetic licence...

And, several hours worth of work over a couple of days later, the third floor is finally (well, nearly..) finished:

Thanks everyone for the comments - I'm slowly getting back into the 'fun' of this massive undertaking, both painting and modelling-wise. Not much more (of particular note) on the painting front for the last couple of days, mostly filling in a few white bits and re-base and undercoating metallics, but I have finally worked on the upper 'crenalations' for the main tower, part of which will also act as a locking mechanism for the removable front wall.

I'm a big fan of pinning things to within an inch of their lives - amazing what a few bits of metal can hold together... I'm sure there were a few more walls on this thing previously:

So a few WIP pics from the weekend (with apologies for the poor camera work):

Front eagle nearing completion:

Work has begun on the non-ruined side of the main tower:

And continuing to re-base coat all the metal work on other areas (this is the most frustrating part of the whole process!):

Given how long it takes me to do this, the fact that I've not actually finished the build yet means I have no idea when this project will finally be completed....

Wow... Over two years since my last post on this project :-/

And having just picked up a paint brush and picked out a few parts, I recall why it's been so long - what the hell was I thinking making this thing so damned big?!?!

quoting my post from October 2013-

"I know how absolutely huge that model is. About a year ago I spent a lot of time putting together GW buildings. I made some that were huge (and then tore them apart for smaller buildings instead) but the size I was working with is completely dwarfed by what you are building. It is going to take you months to finish this project."

I was wrong. Here's the appropriate correction- "It is going to take you months years to finish this project.

And please, no misunderstanding- you're in excellent company. I have projects from the 90's that are still sitting on my Shelf of Shame. Glad to see you back on this one, it's epic and so incredibly over the top.

Lol.. Thanks Skalk. It's fair to say that IF I'd worked solidly on the project to the exclusion of anything and everything else, I could probably have finished it in months. But a two year hiatus? That's really unacceptable.

Sadly, it also looks like GW are discontinuing the kits used to make the Cathedral - thankfully I THINK I have enough parts to do both it and the Chapter House/Cloister board already, but it's a shame to see them go.. Oh well, doubtless I'll get round to doing a proper Sector Mechanicus board at some point too

No....the hiatus just means I got back into modelling just in time to see you continue. Thinking it as a service to myself, and others like me, rather than a very long smoke break.

So, no point updating this project without some new pics right? Well, here you go - I’m working on the ruined ‘manufactorium’ section of the building as I want to finally get this completed before moving back to the main tower. Logistically even this small section is a nightmare as I need to fully paint all of the individual components in it before I can glue them together, and the details are soooooooooooo time consuming!
