Also the diagonals add strength to the whole structure, and there will be more of them in the other walls.

that is the second reason you needed these!

Thanks. Well you have to push yourself every now and then and that what I'm doing here.

Never throwing another piece of spru away.

That's what I like to hear.
You can use it for almost anything (and I will be in this build; if I can make it out of sprue, I will make it out of sprue...time permitting).

Yep, if this is meant for gaming on and around (and in) it's going to need to be strong.

Now the glue is dry, that wall is feeling pretty strong by itself.
I think this will be the sturdiest and solidly built, run down, rotten wood hut there is...

and wow, another page flies by...

Easily fixed (relatively) by attacking it with the scalpel again. It's not as if it's a particular design I need to try and replicate, just scape away...

I'm more worried about the whole structure falling apart when I finally put the last piece on.

Thanks Vent (another person that has a thread I've been lurking on for too long ).

Yeah, it came about because I've been doing Sprue Swords recently and reading the competition rules where it said "left over modelling supplies, such as sprue" and it just kind of clicked and wouldn't leave my thoughts. So I made one plank and threw some brown paint at it and when I looked at it, it looked like a piece of wood and I though "maybe I could make a small hut"...

In other news: There is news that is actually related...
I currently have 27 short planks for the other three walls (how I've got 27, when I'm making 2 from each piece of sprue I don't know), but I don't know how many I need so I'll have a go at building the wall around the window and see how many that takes. I'll update later when I have something to show...

Liquid cement, such as Bondene or ProWeld would be your go-to glue I'd think. No worry of glue bomb there.

I use a syringe bottle for super glue accelerator, but it would be handy for glue too. I would not recommend the non-toxic Weldene, it works, but it stinks worse than the toxic stuff does.

That's why I'm using the cross beams and gluing everything together very carefully.

As for glue, I've been using Humbrol Poly cement (the thick one in the squeezey tube) for strength. I've not had problems with glue (touch wood...damn that's made of plastic... ) and I've got some Humbrol liquid poly cement (with the brush) for more accurate applications or for running into gaps etc... Did I mention my glue collection...

And speaking of glue, it's time to start wall number 2. Which will be attached to the back wall to make one whole corner of the hut.

lol. Thanks SS. The wall is now complete. So here's another photo drop...

Who needs an Aegis Defence Line when you have a wooden hut?
This wall has used up all the planks I had, so I need to make more for the other walls (at least they're the broken walls, so won't need as many).

Inside; I added a cross beam from the middle of the back wall to the other wall to add another contact point and therefore strength.

Hiding in the shadows...

And what it looks like with the light outside.

On to making more planks...

i like those loose haging boards... that adds a ton of charcter to the hut...

where i have my issues with is the window... just a mere hole... hmmm.... or will you add a frame? maybe even some bend and wrecked shutters? that would be cool!!!

Thanks. Characterful is the aim.
At the moment, it is just a hole. But if I have time, I may add shutters. That's a good idea, ta.
I want to get the whole hut built first and then I'll furnish it with bits and bobs depending on how much time I have left. That's why I'm going like the clappers on it for the moment.

cormadepanda wrote:I too like this wooden hut. I wish it for my Orks.. and grass.

Thanks Panda. There is also plans for plant life, depending on time again.

Currently working on the door's corner. That was tricky to attach the frame of a door, when one side of said door doesn't reach the floor...

If I may, I suggest to put, on the base, after gravel/sand/rocks/whatever, a few broken planks from the missing walls, that little details that change the piece from awesome, to awesomesauce!

Comrade: I don't think you understand the door issue, It's not meant to reach the floor... See below.

Indeed, that is also in the plans (I've been saving the off-cuts from planks that were too long). Thanks.

Yep. That allows me to give the hut a "normal" sized door AND allows models on a base that's too wide for the door to enter the hut AND the hole in that corner of the hut allows access for your hand to place/move the model inside the hut AND saves on planks of "wood" and therefore time.

Amazing work. and considering the amount of work necessary to produce those amazing planks, you are flying along.

Very nice so far. What colour scheme are you going to use on the wood? I always use a rather lazy scorched brown/rhinox hide undercoat with khemri brown drybrushed over the top.

I would like to see what you do as to improve on my own painting.

Thanks. Once your into the groove of it, you can motor along.
I believe it's the 8th of August. So just over 2 weeks left. I'm hoping the painting won't take long (as it's mostly wood), but the weathering will be quite in-depth and so I would like to leave a week/5days for just painting, but will see...

I'm not entirely sure yet. I had a chat with Weety on her blog about wood and that gave me some ideas.
I'm thinking that most of the planks will be (initially) the same colour to indicate the same wood, but then a few will be different to add variation and then there will be lots of dirt, grime, mould, rot, damp, rust, etc... over them to give the whole thing a derelict look.
I'll post up the painting as and when I do it, although being Humbrol paints it may not mean much to you (I'll try and do translations when I do though).
