Actually the grey of the sprues is giving me the vib, you should go with that grey sun bleached look rather than brown.

Ta. maybe I'll do half of it, to make it look like the sun is mostly from one direction... I'll stick it with the other ideas.

Once the glue it dry here, I'll do the base. This will make it easier to do the broken corner as I can stick the posts down.

There are easier ways to get the same or similar look, but everyone should have a go at making Sprue-Wood, if only for a picket fence...

I'm now waiting for the glue to dry on the base so I can check if the hut is actually attached to it and to finalise the base's mud and rocks before adding more details/larger rocks and debris and then finishing the hut... it's just sat there and I can't touch it...

Thanks Comrade.
Since you asked and the glue is still drying (why must PVA be water based, damn those hydrogen bonds... )... here's what the base looks like so far.

In a departure from sprue as a material, the basing mix is my usual collection of dried paint/glue, plastic scrapings and all the other bits of general rubbish that builds up on your modelling board/table during model making.
You may or may not notice (it will be more apparent once painted) a worn path from the doorway to the left rear corner, which is mostly devoid of large rocks etc...

yeah... after you mentioned it i saw the path... good looking basing by the way... looks almost fit to play on even unpainted...

as for the drying issue of PVA... well... i just put it on our balcony and the sun and dry air does the trick... half an hour... during this i cook meals or do the laundry... drying time is always well spent on other errands^^

Thanks Theo. Hopefully my eventual paint-job does it justice.
Speaking of plaques you can see in that picture above, I saved the original "plank concept" plank and stuck it on above what's left of the door to be used as a plaque-like object. Although I have an idea for what to write on that already, but you're going to have to wait until it's painted...

Viktor von Domm wrote:yeah... after you mentioned it i saw the path... good looking basing by the way... looks almost fit to play on even unpainted...

Thanks. Yeah, this is how I do all my bases and it'll be painted similar as well so it all fits together. I know what you mean about the unpainted look, I have thought this before. But there is more to do on the base, so it won't look so (relatively) plain.

as for the drying issue of PVA... well... i just put it on our balcony and the sun and dry air does the trick... half an hour... during this i cook meals or do the laundry... drying time is always well spent on other errands^^

Yeah, it's getting there. At least the warm weather is good for one thing. I'll leave it alone for the night and it should be solid in the morning.

Well the tutorial is out there for all to see... and I'm sure you have plenty of sprue laying about...
Thanks.

This is kind of a spot the difference picture really.
Although you can see the support struts I added between the walls.

I've added a few larger pieces to the base (some of which are round the back so you can't see them) such as a possible broken ceramic pot and some wood. More will be added later when I have the whole thing together and can see the empty spaces and/or where it looks too regular.
Had to resist putting too many large "rocks" as I need to leave space for the plants that I plan on making (from sprue obviously).

I think I can call the main hut structure finished and I will now start on the roof...
Anyone spot any issues while I have time to fix them?

Thanks NF. I'm happy with it so far. The extra effort just makes it all the more special, coupled with this being my first terrain piece and my first complete scratch build; I think when it comes to playing a game, this will always be on the table.

Ha ha. I have loads of sprue myself and it doesn't take much to make this; I've used one Eldar Guardian sprue, one Termagant sprue, most of one half of the Dire Avenger double sprue and some of a Tyranid Warrior sprue so far.

Casey: Look forward to what you and others do with the sprue wood.

Roof in progress.
I made the frame and I added small pegs that allow for easier positioning on the hut and prevent it from falling off.

And I've wrestled the corrugated steel roof from the cardboard (that was more of a pita then I remember from childhood).
I even have spares if I make a mess of these.

These aren't glued down yet, so don't worry about he warped nature of them and I will be damaging/weathering this near corner to match the rest of the hut, I just had to build the whole to get the position of the beams right for when it is broken...

hmmm.... seeing the last footage... i think the corrugated metal roof should be reconsidered... seeing how you are able to come up with such sweet structues... you should to wooden shingles...i am not telling you this to bother you... but to not bother us if you didn´t

honestly... wouldn´t that make the whole thing not go full circle?....i think so

cheers, vik

That's an interesting thought Vik.
What is it that you don't like about the metal roof?

Wooden shingles "wood" be possible, but "wood" also be a hell of a lot more work.
and they "wood" have to be very small shingles as sprue is very thin and therefore there "wood" have to be a ridiculous number of shingles.

Also, do you not think that the hut is becoming very WOOD?
I think the metal roof "wood" give the whole model another texture. Otherwise it's likely to become "here's some wood, here's more wood, and this is some wood...".
