Resentful Grot With a Plan

Greetings,

I have been posting regularly about the Imperial Mushroom Hunters since last autumn; Now the time has come for their notorious allies, the Feudal Guard of Mud.

Far off in the Segmentum Obscurus, there is a planet called Mud. It is a feudal world, or at least it used to be. Following a catastrophic event some two thousand years ago, the inhabitants of Mud lost access to advanced technology, and developed a highly decentralised, agrarian society. The Imperial government did not see fit to re-introduce lost technology, since the underdeveloped planet was politically stable and economically productive. Over the years, the inhabitants of Mud discovered metal working and various construction methods, but society remained strictly decentralised. There were tens of thousands of communities, all but identical, where farmers (peasants) laboured for local landholders (nobles), in return for their protection.

The inhabitants of Mud seldom questioned their place in the Imperium of Man, fearing the God-Emperor much like their local landlord. Zealous clergy members kept the peasants in line; Everywhere there were churches and chapels, adorned with images of the God-Emperor and the horrors awaiting those who rejected Him. Every year, Imperial Cargo Ships arrived at designated spots, where locals amassed their tithe of crops and minerals. These transactions were smooth in general, and only occasionally did the tax collectors need to make use of their heavy bolters.

Indeed most inhabitants of Mud were aware, in a vague sense, of the existence of modern technology. The jet-driven Imperial Cargo Ships were proof enough, but there were other visitors as well, such as trade ships from neighbouring planets. Despite these interferences, the inhabitants of Mud took little interest. On the military side, modern rifles were considered dishonourable, and were effectively forbidden. The nobility of Mud preferred swords and lances, venerating prowess in personal combat. While the peasantry sometimes made use of ranged weapons such as bows and slings, this was accepted since only the strongest would be able to actually harm an armour-clad nobleman (unlike lasguns, which anyone could use). On the non-military side, the clergy often were generally suspicious of technological advancements, and associated them with the workings of the God-Emperor’s enemies.

That was before the Honourable Restoration, of course.

I sense a New Model Army on the horizon. Absolutely love the backstory and the model looks superb!

Thanks a lot everyone! The project is well underway. Here are some pictures of the first infantry squad, before priming. The bodies are from Bretonnian men-at-arms, otherwise it's all Astra Militarum bits I think.

Sadly, I think bretonnia has gone the way of the Squats.... Although amazingturtles said you might have some success using oathmark human infantry. Not sure how they scale with cadians.

Also: Loving this thread. I like the diorama-like quality of poses.

Oooh! These look great! Great choice of head on the chubby guy, he looks thoroughly grumpy, as you expect for only being given 1 grenade and a knife! Oh no, he’s hiding a lasgun, still looks cool!

I was actually also going to ask how Pommander got his hands on the Brettonians! More to the point, the price point - there are a few odd sprues I'd like to pick up for misc. projects.

Love the medical diorama and the guy getting his paper cut mended. Lots of character in the squad.

Thanks everyone! I have the men-at-arms since my early warhammer days, before the ten-year break. Back then I bought twenty of them for a conversion project (Kislevite spearmen) that I didn't finish. I thought they were still easy to get second-hand, though. Reading your posts I value them even more! By the way, I'm glad you noticed the paper cut, Don Qui Hotep. Also, Gobert, the chubby guy is known as Fragger Tuck. He is a local celebrity on planet Mud.

There is more to tell about Mud and the Honourable Restoration, of course, but I need to post some pictures first! This is Basil the Basilisk, a well-used artillery piece that was sent to Mud as part of the modernisation process. Note the Muddite coat of arms, gules a chevron argent.

These pictures reflect the creative process chronologically; As you can see I added the crew members one at a time, and replaced the '414' sign with a shield. The crenellations are made from a cut and filed movement tray, with rivets glued on afterwards. I consider adding another crew member to the rear platform, so the model does not count as finished yet. Also, sorry about the upside-down smoke launchers and the over-painted periscopes (they caused some annoyance at my Instagram account). I'm still learning about these strange and wonderful technological things!

I think I can forgive the periscopes and smoke launchers as they seem to have a keg based gun rack! great stuff as usual Pomander!

Forgive me for saying but I think some instagrammers need to lighten up a bit! I think Basil is a beauty and should be respected as such.

Also they are feudal worlders... you can always say that is fully intended as they got Basil and a crate of smoke launchers separatly with just the instruction to "bolt them on". So they did, neither knowing nor caring what they are intended to do. In my personal opinion these details are perfect to illustrate a regiment from a feudal/feral world
