With my stuff boxed up for my trip south, I've been reading a lot more books and just window shopping.
I've never played chaos anything, ever. But I've been looking at the models for 30k Alpha Legion. They have cool models, and allow you to use models from other factions.
I would totally play these, but the area I'm moving to plays 40k/Combat Patrol/Kill Team... not Horus Heresy.
Have you ever wanted to build an army, even though your chances of playing with it are slim?

Brilliant model to build and paint - at best use him as a giant in Dogs of War?

If I like a model enough I'll get it, regardless as to whether it fits in with an existing project. I collect toy soldiers first, armies second.

I have a bunch of Skorne models from Hordes that I got on the cheap from my FLGS that was clearing their stock.
I have no intention of playing Warmachine/Hordes. But Skorne models make really good Githyanki I can use for D&D.

Yes.
I will not count models bought from other games that I plan on using in something else.
For ex; I have all kinds of stuff from a huge variety of sources that serve in our D&D games....
But stuff bought FOR actual games that I'll likely not ever play for some reason or other? Yes I have.
Some things in the closet:
●Warmaster - a complete Kislev army.
Why it'll never get used - interest in WM died about a week after GW shipped my order. I never got it even assembled & I'm the only person I know of in my area that owns an army.
●Bloodbowl/Dungeonbowl - I have several teams. Built & painted
Why not - scheduling. It never fails, the shop runs a League whenever it's least convenient for me. and people here don't seem to just play pick up games of BB.
●Battlefleet Gothic
A very similar tale to Warmaster. Long ago there was going to be a 40k campaign involving space battles. The group played 1 game to learn the system - and hated it.
I never got my starter box even opened.
And then just for the hell of it? I built a Necron fleet when that was released.
Why - because nobody else around me has BFG
●Marvel Crisis Protocol
I have all the classic Spiderman foes + a few extra figs.
I SWEAR I'll around to playing this one!
●Epic Battles (Napolionics - French) by Warlord.
Why? A friend & I were going to play this. I bought the French, & he, being British, picked up the British.
And then 2020 happened.
And shortly after that he moved back to England
He & I were the only one in my area interested in this game. :(

Yea all the time, I still buy 40k gak for no reason, last time I played was first week of 8th edition But more often it's just buying more factions than I can get through for a game I do play

The game is a distant third consideration when buying a model, for me. First is the model it’s self, followed by any fluff inspiration for wanting that character or monster. I just have to assume I’ll never game with them these days.

No, as each kit I purchase is with the clear thought of how many games I can use them with. For example, at one time I was using Blue & Pink horrors for Kill Team, Duels of the Crystal Labyrinth and Frostgrave. Lost interest in the first two but I still use for them in Frostgrave, so it's time and money well spent.

Not only do I continue to buy models I'll li,Ely never use, got a pair of 3d printers so I can make an Inexaustible supply of random game-agnostic models and scenery
My only hope is for my son's nascent interest in 40k to blossom further

I generally at least need to be able to tell myself I'll use a model for something, eventually.
I've ended up with a lot of models for "RPGs and mini agnostic skirmish" or periods/games that I'm unlikely to play though.

I'm slowly growing a 30K Mechanicum army in my backlog but I don't intend to play the HH system because none of my mates is interested in the game. But I'm pretty sure once I've painted them I'll just take some of the OPR community lists that's flowing around for Mechanicum to put them on the field.

Nope, without the prospect of the model getting some use I have very little motivation to paint it. And as a result, no reason to buy it.

I only by what I intend to use. However, I have a lot of different game systems and no model goes long without a game it can be played in, even it the host game died long ago.
It is much more common for me to write a game for the express purpose of giving myself a reason to buy certain models.

I've purchased several armies for games where the figures never got painted, the games never got played, and they got sold.
-LoTR Urkhai and Gondorians. Really wanted to get into LoTR, but my crew never got interested.
-Complete armies for Spacelords Phagon, Bunker Breakers and Sarday'kin. Never painted any of them for any game, much less the German game they were intended for. Figures I'd always dreamed of owning, but once I got them I realized it wasn't going to happen.
-Warzone Box 2nd Edition Box sets. Never played Imperials or Bauhaus or any faction for the game. What can I say, the game looked cool.
-Historical English Agincourt army of Essex miniatures. Had plans, but they never panned out.
-Kryomek Nexus Army. Great figs that I found at a great price, but probably shouldn't have bought.
Big Box of Quar. Haven't yet, but I'm keeping them and they WILL get some painted and used somewhere. I hope...
And there are probably others.
This doesn't of course count the several armies I've deliberately acquired-for, painted (or bought already painted) and then played in games other than what their manufacturer intended. Also not the armies where the game died (or went to crap) and they live on in other games.

I did buy the ABC Warriors boxed game with the intention of never playing the game. I wanted the models for my RT games. Will be buying all of the 2000 AD related figures they ever decide to make, or at least those which will fit scalewise to existing 40K minis.

Recently a bit more consciously. Back in the day there was always an intend of playing with the mini in one for or another, even if that never panned out.
The recent release of The Old World, especially with some classic made to order classic, made me buy some of those even if I don't play the army. I got some classics like the metal Vermin Lord (way before TOW that one), the Marauder Giant, some classic Brets characters, and also got some "old style" modern sculpt like some goblins and squigs from kickstarters just because they have that sweet Marauder/old fantasy look.
If the High Elves and Beastman have some decent made to order offering (or even as regular release), I might get some also despite not playing or intending playing them. Like that old Elf character on chariot, that one would be sweet!

Everything I buy for 40K these days will be used in OPR Grimdark Future or other similar games, so I suppose that counts?
Other than that I bought stuff from VOID and...was it VOR? I dunno. 90s sci fi games that I use for 40K setting stuff like RPGs. They had some cool "normal humans in power armour" models that I really liked and some female sci fi troops that were a novelty back then.
I also buy a load of stuff from North Star but tend to use it in whatever system I feel like, and I don't really like Oathmark for example so I won't be using the pile of Oathmark stuff I have for that game. I might someday play Stargrave I suppose but mostly they're just more generic sci fi minis for the pile.
Everything else I've played at least once, though only once for Descent: Journeys in the Dark (sadly!).

Yes, I built and painted an entire Elysian Drop (back when the Valkyries were all resin). As I had some regular Guard armies, I sort of knew I would never play them as they quickly disappeared from the game.

I would say 95% lol.
The painting/building part for me is most important as I seldom get to play many games these days (once a month if fortunate). But that does at least free things up, as you can have a collection of random things and not have to buy rulebooks or entire armies, just because you like the look of a miniature.
I suspect it is different for each of us depending on which aspect of the hobby you enjoy.

I pretty much always intend to play with everything I buy at some unspecified time in the future, but in a lot of cases that's really a fantasy. I have many games and models I've never actually used.

This. There is a healthy dose of self deception that I’ll get minis to the table, but the potential is always there.
And sometimes it actually happens.
