Well there you have it folks, smokers don't actually smell because one guy knows one girl who smokes and doesn't smell. Thank you for busting this myth.

Meh, it serves to calm you...that's about it..
Y'know, even as a rabid smoker...I honestly advise younger folks not to start...it's an expensive habit that will probably eventually kill you...or at least feth up your health...I usually tell them that as I screw a cigarette into my mouth and light up...just to confuse the hell out of them.

Interesting, though I suppose it makes sense.Parkinsons is partially (or wholly, not entirely sure which) caused by not enough dopamine(which tends to cause a euphoric calming sensation) in the brain.

Anyway, dad caught me trying to light up when i was five and he challenged me to a duel using his katanas... it was certainly amusing and we both have scars from that particular event, and i have never touched a cigarette again... except when dad can't find the pack he left on the counter top.

Nicotene doesn't actually calm you per se, it's a stimulant. The reason you feel calmer is because the nagging craving you've been having in the back of your mind has suddenly eased.

I don't like smoke and wouldn't date a girl who smokes. I despair of my friends who start, because whatever about "enjoying life while it's here" do you have to pay stupid amounts of money to smell like an ashtray and hasten your end while you're at it?

But one of the best anti smoking arguments I know of happened fairly recently.
For the last 20 years, so pretty much almost as long as I can remember, my father has had terrible problems with his feet. He's a policeman, and it started when he was walking the beat. He got corns, bunions and verrucas, and no chiropodist could make it better. He was in pretty constant pain with his feet all the time, and it gradually got worse and worse. His mood degraded too, til he was pretty much a humourless troll man. As the years went by, the problems got more severe until his toes began to curl into a clench of agony, and he had shooting pains up as far as his knee when he would walk any distance. He was a completely grim fether to be around during these years, starting arguments over any little thing and generally acting like someone had pissed in his cornflakes. He was limited to a sort of crabwise shuffle when he was walking around, and couldn't stand for long periods.

He gave up smoking this last year. Last time I went home, I came out of the airport looking for my dad. I had to doubletake at the man walking towards me. Walking. I cannot describe the absolute jarring shock of seeing my dad life his foot confidently and slam it down into the ground with apparent visceral delight. He was smiling too, practically grinnng.
I couldn't get over it. He walks all the time now, does yard work, and generally is in a much better mood all the time. He cracks jokes constantly.

Apparently, when he stopped smoking the circulation to his extremeties improved markedly. This allowed his own immune system to fight the problems in his feet more effectively and generally helped heal the damaged area. It healed by itself within about 6 months. He still goes to the chiropodist and he's not pain free, but compared to the crippling agony he's endured for the last decade it's absolutely nothing to him.

I met a 93 year old woman who was in the ICU for kidney problems who had smoked since she was 14.

I've smoked for 20 years now and I can already tell that I'm not going to be one of those fortunate few who hit the genetic lottery and can smoke into there nineties. I cough up thick brownish gak in the mornings and sure as heck couldn't run past a 1/4 mile, when I used to do 4-5 mile runs 10 years ago.

Once I get health insurance I'm going to try Chantix, as I've already tried every non medicinal method of quitting, but I'll never be one of those militant ex smokers.

Hell, I'm going into respiratory therapy as a profession, I wish more people would smoke so I can gets paid!

I gave up smoking by using an electronic cigarette. I didn't use it as a replacement. Just something I could turn to instead of a cigarette for when I really wanted to smoke.

I personally think nicotine patches etc... are useless. The idea that smokers continue to smoke because they are addicted to nicotine must be one of the biggest fallacies ever. Yes nicotine is addictive and makes you feel like a cigarette. But nicotine addiction is the easiest thing in the world to overcome... All you need to do is not smoke for about 3 days and you're over it. The difficult part to overcome is the social and emotional attachments that are associated with smoking.

What causes most people to fall off the wagon is being around other people who are smoking. I'm pretty sure anyone on this board who has ever tried to quit, or even just tried to cut-down, will be able to confirm that trying to deny yourself a cigarette, while being with a group of people chatting and smoking is pretty impossible. I've seen it happen many times, with myself and with friends. People can be good for days, or even weeks, but once they get outside with their friends, they only last about 20 mins before they are begging someone to give them a cigarette.

Fact is: it's actually quite easy not to smoke when you're at home on your own. Now try having a few beers and watching all your friends light up, that's when it gets really tough. The reason is because people want to participate in a social activity. Failure to participate is not only unsatisfying, it actually causes social anxiety too. That is the reason why nicotine replacement has such a low success rate when it comes to helping people to quit. It might take the edge off your craving, but the craving isn't the real issue. The real clincher is the anxiety, which is caused by not being able to 'join in'.

This is why I found electronic cigarettes about a million times more useful as a cessation aid. I was still able to sit down with everyone else and blow a big smoke ring, and then I felt happy and comfortable again. Even when using the 0% nicotine vapour. It's not the nicotine that's important, it's the taking part.

I never thought I would be able to quit smoking, but it turned out to be quite easy and painless with the electronic cigarette... (just make sure you keep a spare battery charged at all times).

Ah, one but your myth was so well founded in fact and not opinion how could it be busted?
Some smokers stink, some fat people stink, some people just stink. I never smell of smoke because I care. My ex girlfriend was a pack a day smoker and she didn't smell of smoke and her kisses didn't taste of smoke either. This was when I didn't smoke.

And they taste even worse...but perhaps that's because I find the ones where their oral hygiene wasn't top notch to begin with. o_O

I used to smoke - not for very long mind you - but I stopped. It just never caught on with me, but I really don't care who smokes, how much, or why. It's their body and their life. The only reason I'd get upset is if someone was blowing smoke purposefully into my face or my 14mth old sons face. Then I'll tell them where to go and how to get there.

But now after saying that...cherry flavoured cigarillos (sp?) I find really quite tasty. Haven't had on it at least 2 years though.

I smoke only "premium" hand-rolled cigars. I dont smoke where my kid will get the smoke (so I'm at least down wind a good few feet). I want her to realize when she is old enough that there is nothing wrong per se with the choice of smoking. Just do it responsibly, and in balance with the rest of your life. That old saying, "Everything in moderation" really rings true for me. I get a ton of exercise, due to my job, and I eat about as healthy as I can (most of the time), I drink but not to excess. It's all about balance, because too much of some things turns into a problem.

Do I know that smoking or tobacco in general will "kill" me? yeah i do.
Do I think that we (Americans) need MORE laws telling me where I can not smoke? Feth no! In fact, I feel like smoking is, in an abstract way, a 1st Amendment right, and laws which prohibit me from smoking in certain places violate that.
Do I move, if my smoking bothers someone? Generally yes, depending on how I'm asked. If they have kids, I dont try to get my smoke all over them, and I never TRY and blow smoke at someone, thats just rude all over.

For those who are familiar with AFN, what I am tired of seeing is all the anti-smoking "commercials" we're subjected to out here. I honestly do not think that anyone can legitimately say these days, that they didn't know that tobacco use can harm or kill them, and because of this, I think that it's a huge waste of time to air "quit now" commercials to adults in the military.

Honestly, there are far worse things that you are exposed to on a daily basis than smoking.

And, how can you really "stink up the place" when you are outside?? it doesnt linger, unless the person smoking has poor hygene and smells anyways.
