Thanks everyone! Funny to see the "H"s post back-to-back!

@Theo: Well, the basic set is 35 rice, which is the standard price for a small game. Large games/ tournament games are 50 rice. I can do that exactly with the two new figures. There is a middle ground which is either 42 or 43 rice.

Thing 1 and I have been going nuts with the terrain, so I thought I'd share some pics. We also had a game last night so I may try and cobble together a battle report of sorts for you.

Firstly... we got enough things put together to make a nice "farm table". Keep in mind this is just all on a green grass mat, but it's good enough to give a proper feel to the board even though the ground is hopelessly artificial. I will start work on a proper board soon, but it seems more efficient to work on the terrain first as it directly affects our games.

Next are a couple of photos of the farm house. The second includes a couple of ox carts. We have a couple of hand carts put together too.

Here are a pair of rice barns. You can see one of the hand carts on the left.

Here's one of our three small shrines (hokora), complete with sake jars as offerings. As you can see neither the jars nor the shrine are fully painted yet. I think the shrines are next on my list.

Lanterns around the pier/bridge (I'll be making some simple bridges that go better with this rural setting than the fancy red one).

Close up of one of a set of four lanterns.

Something to go with the more formal temple table... a temizuya (hand washing station).

See you got some of the Miniaturemarket tiny terrain . I may have to grab some myself for scatter. Table is looking good. I’m thinking of trying my hand at some river sections for my table.

More terrain and a mini-batrep!

First off, my third and final hokora complete with rope and little hanging prayer sheets (and sake offerings).

Next, a rack for sake offerings for a larger temple complex. (kanji care of my son)

Now for the mini battle report...

Latest version of the farm table... really happy with how it came out. Need to paint up the two rice storage units, do the thatch roofs properly and make a peasent-looking bridge or two. Still, very fun to play on even as it is. Six idols in this scenario with both prayer tokens at T4 & prayer and interactions scored at T6. The two clans are clashing over the resources this farm produces. The victor gaining much needed access to the grain stores therein.

Both sides move forward aggressively. Kotenbo claims the bridge while the two best Ito warriors close on him.

On the left side, the Hill Tribesmen wrestle with two temple bushi over and idol at the ford.

Thing 1's new Ito warrior is a total menace. Don't think I've managed to do a single point of damage to him yet. I usually try to just run away.

A large scrum ensues around one of my friendly idols. Kotenbo ultimately goes down but he holds up both of the Ito warriors for an amazingly long period of time. My archer (bottom) eventually breaks free of combat and makes a dash for an idol deep in Ito territory.

On the left the fight continues... the Hill Tribesmen ultimately claiming victory but not until after Nuniq (spear maiden) is cut down.

The bridge is silent now, the river washing away the bodies and blood of the defeated Tengu. Victory for Ito 2:1.

Thanks Anpu!

@Yorkright: Well, it's kind of hit or miss actually. We had a game the day before which I won. Now that Thing 1's figured out how to run his warband... a lot depends on specific missions (which can favor one side or the other) and our dice rolls. If you happen to get really lucky at the same time your opponent gets really unlucky... you can end up one-shotting a lesser model which can really change the dynamic. Other times (like the fight between Kotenbo and the two main Ito fighters) we both roll poorly and we end up belly-bouncing for several turns before someone finally goes down. I guess that's what makes the game interesting and not just a mathematical exercise.

I was going to commend you on the use of twine on the sake containers, until I remembered the ropes are part of the casting.

So, now I commend you on the skillfulness of your paint job!

Thanks Brian. The cast ropes are really simplified compaired to how these things are really tied off... but they get the idea across.

Haiku

We actually had two games going at the same time last night... a new record!

Here's the board. I actually have enough good terrain to provide for two separate boards! The scenario was that we each have a secret "VIM" (very important model) that we need to get to the enemy's deployment zone. Points for getting your guy there, killing your opponent's VIM while yours is still alive and having your VIM alive at the end of the game. My Tengu start in the lower right, Tyler's Temple starts in the upper left (6"x6" deployment area... basically on the far sides of the rice storage buildings). This pic was taken near the end of the game so model placement doesn't relate to anything.

My VIM and his escort take off to the right to try and work their way around the monks coming up the center while my axe-wielding barbarian waylays two peasents in the center. Unfortunately a super speedy monk makes his way to my guy and kills him... winning the game for Tyl.... BUT WAIT....!!!

Turns out that wasn't by VIM after all! Just a clever decoy!

My actual VIM attacked the temple head-honcho in order to get an 8" charge move closer to the enemy's deployment zone, then pulled a sneaky trick to bugger-out of combat and win the game!

I'm so naughty...

You look at these small-scale minis games, and realize just how much fun can be had for 1/10th or even 1/20th (OR LESS) of the cost of 40K/etc.

We need more. MOAR.

@Briancj: Agreed. Starter set is $50. At Adepticon we got two starter sets, the rule book and a two sets of upgrade cards for $100. Add one more figure and you can easily hit 50 rice wich is the standard tounament size list.

Just about done with my next figure... Hakzabo. He's based on the red crowned crane (which is the crane you usually see in all the Japanese artwork). I may bring the white on his head down a little farther along the back of his neck... but he's basically done save for the basing.

The brighter color palette really makes him stand out. Is he melee based or some type of caster?

Not a caster of any sort (I have very few of those). Apparently, when you become "grand champion" in this game you get to design your own model... and this guy is one of those. He's a little faster than normal if he runs.and every couple of turns can get an extra activation. I've been told he's "really good", but other than the activation thing, I don't see it. Then again I don't really know what I'm doing in the game yet. There's a lot of warmachine list synergy going on that I'm failing to grasp.

PROTIP:

Anything that gives you extra actions == a game win condition. End of story.

I think how you have the color split on his head is marvelous . At first I thought of the old Star Trek episode with the planet of people where they were colored half black and half white and there was racial tensions where the ones with white on the one side were dominate over the ones with white on the other side . Of course it has nothing to do with your crane, just how my brain worked . I like your color choice of the blue on him as well.

For context. Note that I fiddled with the distribution of black and white on the head so the eyes would actually show up. I thought the model would look odd with totally natural coloring where the eyes would be nearly invisible. This photo does also explain the white arms and the black legs.
