I guess I'll disagree with you on this one panda (respectfully of course)... vent's taken a different approach to his leather than I usually do and I really like the result. There's more of a yellow cast in there that I find very appealing.

But the orks have always felt like, to me anyways, they are the only race above the grim dark and that they like bright colors and enjoy themselves quite thoroughly in a dark and depressing galaxy.

I decided I'd earned a little diversion. So, a couple of years ago I bought a couple of used battlewagons cheap. They needed paint but otherwise looked OK, but when I got them I discovered the turrets had been perma-glued to the cab roofs! Uuuugh! It took a HACK SAW to get them off. Of course the roof was now damaged to I had to patch it up & of course I'd obliterated the turret mount. Not the last bit isn't really a big deal, but I didn't have any turrets to mount to start with. So I was browsing the internets and was amazed at how expensive little grot turrets were from GW or third party sources. Looking at them, I said to myself. "That can't be all that difficult. Any idiot with a screw-on bottle cap and a bits box could probably make their own!" So... this weekend I decided to prove my own point. I've also been very inspired by the amazing work wazoo does with his ork builds. This can't hold a candle to that... but his work has definitely been an inspiration.

I started with the smallest bottle cap I could find... an old plastic ork bike that I was never going to use, some other bits, some Zinge strips (thank you Zinge!!), plasticard and rivet stock and a will to do something I'd never done before... build something 40k from scratch.

Here's the result!

And on the battlewagon...

Now... it's a bit big I admit. That was the smallest cap we could find (which we've since found out are all pretty much made to a standard size). We'll be looking for caps from smaller things like medicine bottles and such from now on. I must admit, I'm inordinately proud of it. (I even found a use for the giant chainsword teeth that come in one of the Zinge sets!) The build looks kind of a mess but I think it'll prime & paint up nice. My other thought was to make it the turret for a grot tank... but now I have to build the tank. I'm working on a foam block to rough out the shape, then I'll sheathe it in plasticard and fiddle with it from there.

This is shaping up to be a really fun little project!

Good effort. Looks the part.

You say it looks a bit big, but aren't Orks supposed to be of the mind-set that bigger is better?!

Assuming that's the gunner popping out to say "Hello" does he have some form of control (stick, panel, big red button) for firing the guns?
Just a thought.

Hmmmm.... that's a thought. How about a big, red "Easy" button? (sorry, American advertisement reference)

This is my very first attempt at riveting too... so it's kind of a milestone piece.

@BLACKHAND: Not within my comfort zone... but I'm willing to try just about anything!

@cormandepanda: Thanks! We'll see how the rest goes.

@Briancj: Thank you my friend. Coming from an expert scratch-builder like yourself that's a great compliment.

After hitting it with an airbrush... it's yellow. Supposed to be shaded but that doesn't show up very well. A sepia wash will take care of that nicely. Paint did diminish a lot of the foibles of the build though.

Well, I cheated and used the Zinge strip that is 3-D checks (same with the rivet strip on the bottom). All I need do is paint them! MY rivets are the much shoddier ones around the hatch.

I remember hearing of a green stuff rivet tool once upon a time. Might make a good investment. Anyways, it certainly looks like something that GW would produce . Great job.

LOL! They're fantastic zinge. Delighted to be able to show off your product. Those strips are exactly the right length to go around a standard bottle cap! How convieeeeeeeeennnient!

And to top things off you're now offering entire sprues of small chainsword teeth so I no longer have to cut them off of chainswords. I'm going to be SO spoiled!

Thanks graven!

I just stopped by my FLGS and picked up/ordered some supplies. Spent a bit of time working on a grot tank body but it's just not happening. I'll fiddle with it a bit more but I might stick to turrets...

Fiddle with your turrets, not your body.

Good advice.
