Looking sweet Skrall. Dark Angels for an allied contingent.... I could dig that, they were preety sweet pre-Heresy, more-so than post that is. I have been led down the path to Olympia as well. I'm thinking of switching my Legion for the Iron Warriors, there is just something about their character and the almost emotionless brutality of their psyche, I like them. But yeh, looking good as usual

Do it. Iron Warriors are by far the most interesting, but untouched, legion pre-heresy.

Man those are some sweet Iron Warriors. Would you mind telling me how you did that red plasma glow and the blue glow from the claws? I'd love to use them in my painting somewhere. I feel your pain about staying up late to paint an army for a tourny. They looked rubbish once I was done but I redid them after. Keep up the amazing work!

The orange is blazing orange with some white highlights, the blue is light sea blue worked up to white. Pretty standard stuff, but fun.

Time for an update, with a tournie on the horizon i'm updating a few old models and adding a classic mini or two. My old dread's going to be re-painted, but so far i've built only two of the potential weapon options. I've also base coated at the cataph and some scout models. I didn't realise they had so much detail, tbh i think i'm going to paint them first.

still waiting on my wall of martyrs. dispatched two days ago via courier, which means my local delivery office (manx independant carriers) has it. What a useless bunch they are.

I've also got a new WIP, a mechanicus ally.... quite what i don't know yet.

Now for an update, i've had a productive morning. Sadly now i've got work, so there won't be anything finished till sunday.

I'm quite happy with the stormpigeon's hazard stripes, but they will need a few touch ups before i move past the basic level of painting.

oh there's quite a simple scheme to them, i'll be bringing it up in a video hopefully, if not then stick with me while i get christmas out of the way so i can produce a detailed video.

it'll be up on the youtube channel in new year, once the christmas period is over i'm doing a vast index of tutorials.

you mean the concrete barriers on the base? they are indeed the over-casts from FW models. they always seemed so easy to use, and that way i get more bang for my buck if the models come with free terrain features.

Now for an update, as i have a tournie starting in the new year i think it's worth bringing up that my lists of models has changed. I've put together a strong space puppy list with allied Vanilla marines to give me a strong strike package.

Now i've spent £250 on forgeworld as my christmas present to myself, but there's other stuff i've got together for the list. my 750 army is still in use, 20 tacticals with plasma/melta, 10 mk2's for sternguard, a thunderfire cannons, some rouge trader scouts for my other troops choice, a box of GK's to put together some librarians from the mK3's i've got coming. There will be a lot to do in the next two months.

Todays update, i've got the two landspeeders within finishing distance (just need to finish the light effects, highlights, basing and do the pilot's flesh), and started my thunderfire cannon.

I asume you mean sternguard vets? They are really cool. I like the heavy flamer, i know GW do a resin upgrade but this way of doing it is far better on all the models i have seen it. The only thing that looks out of place is the angle of the captains bolter, it looks like its falling out of the guys hand

Looking forward to seeing the rest of the squad

Yep sternguard.... DERP. as for the bolter, it's just the angle. i know what you mean though, but it's designed to have a slight lean, since it would look even more awkward if it were straight out.

Again, DERP. The heavy flamer is something i got from looking at GW's 'bitz' and wondering wtf i was paying for when i have old termie flamers around. i almost used the spare i have from the cataphratii but i liked the plastic more.

Time for an army WIP shot. So far i only have to get a box of scouts and add 2 mk2 drop pods (the normal kind i can actually fit into a transport box for regular use) and i've got all my units! now to paint the whole thing in a month or so.... with 0 unit's at the finished standard. But at least most of it's now built and assembled.

So army shot;

Sternguard;

Now for the WIP HQ units. The sword twin librarians;

Now for the tournie i only need two, i can't decide if i want the twins, or what i've nicknamed 'the iron giant'

Still some conversion work left to be done, but i wanted to see what people were feeling...

definatly considering it. I'm also working on perturabo a little sooner than expected. The damned artificer's Dorn means i have to escalate the production of arms. What's more deadly than a thunderhamer wielding terminator primarch?

Legio Cybernetica

basically a dreadnaught. Unless you want to make a sentinel.

I used the same model to make a forgefiend. Not at all a fan of the doggy style autocannons holder so I beefed the penetant engine up and mounted some autocannons on the back to be my forgefiend. It's almost big enough, but I doubt I will get much grub about it getting cover saves too easily as it has the 5++ standard.

very cool. I am in the midst of creating my own dreadknight sized battle engine and am also using the extra guy from the penetant engine. For the body though I am thinking of the body of the forgefiend. It is bulky and incorporates a chest. It has 6 appandage slots, so 2 for legs, 2 for arms and 2 to go unused or for weapons.

Now it's time for the main event. I've been considering this for days, and here's the plan. I wish to develop a... younger version of perturarbo. I want to town down some of the more 'chaos' elements later designs have. As a result i've decided to develop an artificer version of this;

I want to keep some of the design elements (layered armour, bulky shoulders, bolter-fists, thunderhammer) but give him more of a normal marine feeling. I also want to keep that slightly slender feeling they developed with angron (where the body looks more triangular than square). Here's my early mock up;

and a really crappy sketch on the photo to show roughly what i am planning to develop in terms of bulk.

if anyones got any questions (ignore the fact his atonomy is off, i am working on that as the sculpt develops) or wants to suggest things they are welcome!

Updates... probably not until the weekend.

@crystal; thanks man!

As promised the start of the tutorial for an imperial fist. Don't forget if you want to see any updates when they come out (rather than stumbling across them) check out the Facebook page or the new blog

Part 1 of the tutorial time for the imperial fist as promised. Part 1; get a white base coat on your mini;

Step 2; I use a mixture of XV-88/Snakebite and Golden yellow (or a similar colour) to produce a yellow base. It doesn't matter if you do this by paint brush or by hand. I use an airbrush because i have one and it's amazing.

Step 3; Golden yellow and Sunburst/bad moon yellow highlight. Paint on the main surface of the armour, leaving it on the dark yellow recesses is optional, but i do it.

Step 4; i use a mixture of sunburst and white for this, nothing to heavy, a 60:40 max. It's about getting a nice bright colour on the plainer segments of armour a head of part 2.

Next up in part 2; actually moving past having a bright yellow custard marine!

Part 2;

Step 5;

Put down all your basic colours, gold and black in my case. Then wash it with a 50/30/20 mix of water, black and brown.

step 6;

Use a sponge to apply a dark brown damage pattern. 50/50 black brown should get a nice colour, but this can vary with taste of the painter.

step 7;

Apply silver highlights. mithril's best

Step 8;

Use the rest of the mixture for the dark brown damage to make a wash, and apply over the damage to get a nice tone to it all.

Step 9;

Step 10;

This is the last step of 'Decay' the second phase of painting. Here you start highlight and toning down the armour's damage with a nice golden yellow, since it's thin (at least the old stuff is) you can apply it without much worry. if your using a thicker paint, water it down and apply it very carefully.

Step 11;

Now it's time for restoration phase. This is where you paint the rest of it at you normally would, in this case gold highlight, purity seals ect.

Step 12;

Tamya clear red is a must. i was annoyed when i found i was fresh out if it, it adds so much more to the lens effect you cannot imagine.

Step 13;

Highlights once more, and touch ups where you want them. You've now got your basic scheme.

Step 14;

Now i've been asked for a tutorial for this about 9000 times, so here it is.... very easy. You'll need Vallejo air light sea blue and white... and an airbrush. there's other ways out there, but if your serious about your hobby i'd advise getting one, it just opens so many doors for painting. Start by applying the sea blue;

Step 12;

next up is the white. Spray it pretty thin to achieve the highlights.

Total paint time; 2hrs.

There's a warning hear, the clever amidst you will have noticed the issues with the painting; it's peeled off. Metal mini's are hard to do this with, because they peel. However, take a look at the resin/plastic models in my army for a clue on how they would react on the mini's GW currently do.

I hope this is useful to someone, in the mean time i'm going to finish painting and basing this guy. This tutorial is just the quick and dirty approach to making Grimdark Imperial fists, you can take a little more care and time to do this, this is just me hammering it through to completion.

Hey again Skrall!

Loving the stuff as usual. Those libbys are very preety, especially the work on their eyes. If this has been previously answered then don't mind me, but, how do you paint your Iron Warriors? I got started on a Cataphractii and silver washed with black isn't enough, yours looks more dirtier, grittier and more, well, Iron Warriors-like. Any help would be very much appreciated! Also, what's the best way of weathering? I believe you mentioned sponge before but I've never done that so any tips would be nice if you don't mind.
