MMmmmmm Ion Cannons. Great for team play.

Srsly tho. FFG seems to hate you Brits, or at least is having a good laugh with it. It's repayment for the tea tax.

Apparently the UK can indeed repel firepower of that magnitude! *chuckle*snork*cough* ahem...

edit: Out of curiosity, which (if any) games that you were previously interested in or participating in are taking a back seat to X-wing? For me, it's 40k since I didn't (very unexpectedly) like my first full game of 6e and Heavy Gear as their new releases have been sparse for months.

You know what, nothing! X-Wing has a short enough game play that my group uses it as a "warm up" for more time intense games. We do occasionally play game after game but it is usually that: an occassion.

For me it'd probably be Heroclix. They have a similar set up and play time. Both games you can get about 3-4 different games in per night. I can also take X-Wing to RPG nights and play a quick game here or there during breaks or with friends who aren't in the middle of the roleplaying. I've got 11 ships in that little box and it makes a lot of variety. I appreciate the portability of it all.

My wife rocks. She asked if I had any Hobbytown coupons so she could pick me up the Starter and another ship(probably go for a second rebel) for my birthday next weekend.

Now I just need to plan out what else I want to buy for it.

So I managed to score a box of the Micro Machines earlier this week for dirt cheap. The box contained an A-Wing, a Y-Wing, and a TIE fighter.

The TIE is completely out of scale (the pod is the right size, but the wings are way too small).

The Y-Wing is exactly the same size as the FFG one. I was honestly quite surprised how much more detail the FF Y-Wing had. I think that I might still use the MM one in games, but probably mostly just to represent dead ones, since this one was "battle damaged."

And...I have no idea if the A-Wing is the right scale or not...I'm not a big enough nerd to be sure, but I suspect it's probably a little too big.

So, in case any of you were wondering; The FF ships are way better, but about the right size if you don't mind proxying.

40k for me too! The thing is it's very refreshing to have something so much different from the norm to play and it be star wars starships!
It will stay that way until me and my friend have big enough HH armies probably

I drove over 50 miles (over 100 miles round trip) to my closest Hobbytown looking for 1/35 scale armor. They had less than 10 kits in stock, all of which I had either built already or wasnt interested in. Seemed about 80% of the store was dedicated to radio control stuff. Needless to say Ill never be returning to that store.

Whats my game?

Song of Blades & Heroes
Blackwater Gulch

Open to other games too

Wow, sounds like both of my local Hobbytowns are the exception rather than the rule. Both have huge selections and are super friendly and helpful. Anything they don't have, they're willing to check if they can order.

You guys do have great Hobbytowns...I'm in Denver and visit them every time I'm in town. The one near me (N. Wadsworth) is mostly RC, but what stuff they do have is below retail...which beats every other FLGS on the north side.

Anyway, back to X-Wing. MM will cancel your dice if you ask and then ship out your order...if you're still waiting. I went nuts and got two more starters at Target so I don't need the dice now.

I really like the look of them, so far.

looking like a few sets are in the works for me, as well.

How much do those expansions go for? WHO has the best deals in town?

@Grot6

It varies but Miniature Market, CoolStuffInc, CCG Armory...only shipping sets them apart. Should be able to get expansions under $10 and starters around $25, which is the better deal if you're just wanting to add TIEs and X-Wings, but grab one expansion of each to get the pilot cards. I broke down and got two at Target but they're not the best deal...just wanted to start playing.

Does anyone know anything about FF new star wars game? They have one called Edge of the Empire.

Saw those new ships, and am really liking them. Styro astroids, a couple of lines of styro for the side of the star destroyer, and away we go...

Ordered, now for the wait.

All I know is that it has it's own dice system unique only to it. I was able to flip through my copy of the Beta before I had to put it back in my file. I haven't fully paid for my copy yet to look over it more.

Well played my first game of x-wing last night (actually my first 3 games) and it is awesome! The rules are easy to pick up and allow for a quick and action packed game. Things I picked up

* Barrel roll is amazing - getting into firing arc or out of an opponents or best of all both at once.
* Basic TIE's are not to be underestimated
* Y-Wings are a pain to take out 3 shields and 5 hull!
* Ion Cannons are horrible or awesome depending on whether your on the receiving end or not.
* R2D2 is an awesome upgrade.
* Salm in his Y-wing with R2 and an Ion cannon is naughty.

Has anyone played and thought it was a bad game? I realize that we have a pretty whooping selection bias in this thread (people who post in a thread generally like it whereas people who don't like it just don't click on the game's thread).. but just curious for opinions from the lurkers. If you didn't like it, was there any particular reason?

I've played it a couple of times and generally like the game (enough to have bought a starter and a bunch of extras). Here were my minor issues with the game, and I'll preface it by saying that i play a lot of historical flying games that use the same basic mechanics as x-wing, so I realize 'space' combat acts differently:

All in my experience:
1. The playing space is 3x3 or 4x4 usually, which is not a lot of real estate. With the Immelmann maneuvers (which cause stress but don't prevent you from shooting), you are always on top of someone which I gather is the intent since it's supposed to be a giant furball. Which leads to

2. Upgrades, and cards which allow you to forgo an action to repair hull, or shields, or whatever don't get used often, if at all, because you're using focus or target lock to stay alive. To me there is little incentive to take certain upgrades.

3. There is no 'tailing' in the game. So if you do manage to get behind someone, within 1 or 2 range band, you have no advantage aside from the extra firepower die for being within range 1. This particularly matter in the move phase, where you might have to move before the other model, and movement can get the target anywhere. In other flight games, if you get behind someone, they have to reveal to you which direction they are planning to move, but not the exact maneuver. This allows you some way to stick behind them, even if not foolproof, also you tend to get to act immediately following the tailed plane.

4. I've played a couple of freefor alls, and one mission. I worry about the long term playability of the game in terms of it always being a dogfight (I guess thats also the intent), but I guess as they keep releasing new stuff, it'll add some differences. I just hope that there isn't any 'new model creep' as a result. I'd like to see more interesting missions be made available.

So those were my minor quibbles and all in my opinion. I love the models, they're very nicely done for prepaints, and it gives a good game. But to me, its not as 'strategic' as say, Gothic, where you can pass, spend a couple turns coming about, and then get back in. Here, you're always in. Oh, and I love star wars, so there was no way I was passing on it.

To be fair, it plays a lot like how the dogfights read in the X-wing series. They even mention how hard it is to keep a tail on a Tie because of how fast and maneuverable they are.

Of course, which is why I was clear that my impression is biased by having played other historical plane games. It takes some getting used to that maneuver is a total toss-up, and you just take your chances.

Doesn't stop it from being good, just different (for me).

it does prevent you from using "Can't shake him!" "He's right behind me!" "Aaaargh!" Over consecutive turns unless you're very unlucky. :-)

The only bad thing I have to say about it is that it is not as good when playing a random pick up game without a scenario. The back and forth of maneuvering and rolling dice can become exasperating. But scenarios eradicate that for the most part.
That, and it could use a few more scenarios.

Like GW's mini games, it is a game that I do not think is suited for tourney play. It is much better in a casual environment.
