Compel wrote: I just finished that episode there and I kinda came away from it feeling that nothing much happened in it. - I think I misheard someone saying that this was Oberyn's big episode, but that's still to come.
The best part of it was easily Charles Dance being awesome at the start.
Yeah, There was the Rape Scene, which according to the writers is not actually a rape scene and Danys final scene in the episode.

One thing that has been bothering me - why did Littlefiner smash one of the stones before tossing the necklace into Ser Donto's boat? I mean, I know from the books that the necklace's crystals are actually crystallized strangler, but in the context of the show alone, this means nothing to me. Am I missing something?

I think it was just to show that the fool was playing a part and gave her costume jewelry instead of an actual valuable necklace.

Yep.
Had they been a real family heirloom of great value, those "gems" wouldn't have been smashed like that. He was showing they were just a plant.

Wildings attack - really likeing the canibals- bit of character to show why they are feared.
The whole Dany bit was great....
Tyrion and Podrick was good.
Tywin was excellent
Jon Snow - yawn - don't care for him in the books and even less in the show - he is nearly as dull as as Bran and co.
Jamie rape scene- yeah that just did not seem in character - guess its like making the Dragon snap at their mother - sets the scene for later stuff.
Whatever happened to the zombie horde and the Walkers -did they just get lost in the snow or get bored and go back to sleep.

Anyone else notice that this episode was a lot of filler to give reasons for peoples actions later? Stuff that wasn't in the book that you just had to assume. I feel like we're likely to see a lot more of this in the future as the show runners have to tidy up Martin's "story telling".
There's already been quite a bit of this (spelling out Loras's homosexuality explicitly, for example). I don't see it as a fault of Martin's, but as a fault of the average TV viewer. Apparently subtlety is just beyond some folks, but fortunately the show is doing a good job of dumbing everything down so no one feels excluded.

I had not noticed anything about Loras Tyrell. I guess I am dumb and should watch the TV series rather than read the book . However, not going to happen, reading the book is so much more convenient when in transit !

It was incredibly subtle in the book. Honestly, if I hadn't seen the first season before I read the first book, I don't think I would have picked it up either.

I thought the dragon snap scene with Daenarys was totally on point; as well as Jorah's comment on it. Up until this point I suspect TV only viewers might have made the mistake of thinking of them as pets.

Little Fingers I believe from viewpoint proved a point to Sansa that value in a material object or/both individual is what he can gains afterwards. They are means to expend to gain something more of value in his version of game.
Joker family heirloom (necklace) made Sansa trust the Joker even more when given to her. Little Fingers told the Joker to tell her that...damn near verbatim to what Joker told Sansa

I disagree. Martin intentionally leaves things extremely vague and honestly his story telling, while pretty good for the first 3 novels, goes to complete crap in the last two. But to each their own. I'm enjoying watching the show and to me they are on pace to fix the issues I have with Martins writing.

Have to agree about the last few novels - they were dire - despite being willing to kill some people off - they now feel very bloated with unecesary POV some new (
Spoiler:
oh look Dany's not the last Targ - FFS
) and some dragging on (Bran and friends) characters and filler plots - at least thus far in the show, Dany has not revereted to a pathetic husk of her former glory ........
I will have to grit my teeth and read the later stuff but I thought the Dragons were far more devoted to her (and her alone) - until
Spoiler:
she (poor plot device ahoy) imprisons them

This is what Ser Onion Knight is up to, right? I really can't remember this wrinkle in the book or how it went down; exactly. Not sure if this is a divergence or if I just forgot.

I believe he got the Iron Bank to help stannis, yes. Though I can't remember if he got them to lend money, or if he just said something like "hey, you know those Lannister guys not paying their debts (oh, the Irony!), well, give us an army and we'll beat the crap out of them for you, and pay you back their money and then some"

Onion does indeed ask the Iron Bank for funding which they so grant. Being Geoffrey and now the Trommen are no longer making payments to the Iron Bank of the debts of the Iron Throne. The follow on forces of Stennis army including his wife and daughter to the Wall included a Major Rep of the Iron Bank who backs Stennis now that he be more willing to pay on those debts. Also a shrewd move on Lord Cammander Jon Snow to enlist their aid to
Jebus there's a who bunch of paths merging there in going back out story wise.

Yeah, There was the Rape Scene, which according to the writers is not actually a rape scene and Danys final scene in the episode.
Very bad call. For starters GRRM did not approve because the book scene was clearly consensual and went on record critiquing the scene.
More importantly Cersei said 'no'. The show being violent fantasy is no excuse, Game of Thrones should show rape, but the show should not show rape and claim it isnt rape, unless they do so in-character as a point of in-character social injustice.
Cersei was raped, the program makers saying that what was filmed did not depict rape sends a dangerous and incorrect message.
n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.
It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

GRRM even went as far as saying that he could see that they would have had to change something since the scene in front of the body was supposed to be a very emotional and messed up moment. In the books this was the first time that the two saw each other after Jamie was captured, so passion and emotion took over, and that moment ended up being the changing point between the two.
In the show Jamie has already been back for a while so you couldn't have the "oh my god you are still alive I though I lost my lover and my son but I didn't lose you so feth me right here right now" moment from Cersei. So it is understandable that the writers had to come up with a different way of showing that something extreme happened. That decision is understandable, and I think even GRRM understands that.
But GRRM, like most of us, understands that since they made the decision that he was going to rape her they shouldn't hide from that decision or white wash it. There can be a ton of artistic and story-telling reasons why he raped her. It can define the relationship between the two. I don't think the majority of people are mad that he raped her.
The majority of people are mad that the writers are pretenting that it wasn't rape, or that rape sometimes becomes not rape if you just rape somebody long enough until they enjoy it. That's the problem, not the rape itself IMO.

Frankly at this point I can't blame anyone for being confused who the Mountain is. 3 actors in 3 seasons? Shameful. I thought the first guy was terrific, the second guy super lame - like a really tall butler - and the third guy; well, we'll see. He's certainly big enough, but Conan Stevens/1st guy had that absolutely perfect fit of dangerous menace, barely-controlled rage.
