I still watch Fifth Element, from 1997. GotG will hold up well in 2037, I think.
I'm sorry did you just say African Queen and Bullitt are not amazing?
Spoiler:
Humprey Bogart and Steve McQueen are overrated, Like James Dean.
In Bullit it is the chase that makes the movie, Most of the Actors put on a pedestal by Hollywood are mediocre IMHO,
The fun thing about GotG is that the cast just clicks and the banter between them just works. Hope that the second one can hold up to the first one.

GotG and Fifth Element are modern Scifi action/comedies, comparing them to 40+ year old movies of a differnet Genre seems very much like comparing Apples to Oranges.
Romeo and Juliet is classic, and highly reveered, but given the choice I'd watch GotG or 5th Element over Romeo and Juliet.

Sci Fi comedies? Mmm Loved Fifth Element. Thought Ice Pirates was substantially better than GtG. Then of course, we have Spaceballs. May the Schwartz be with you!

God no. I meant, pretty much any other version, but I've only ever sat through the one Playboy produced, when they were trying to make themselves legit, back in the late 60's or 70's.

Ah, the problem is that you are old
Being Old myself, I have serious nostalgic love for Ice Pirates, but by today's standards it looks like a Youtube production.
Speaking of Youtube and SciFi comedies, any of you guys ever watched Space Janitors on Youtube ? Seriously worth a watch.

I do really enjoy Galaxy Quest!, but I think of it more of a parody, in that it's a lot funnier if you remember watching the old Star Trek, and the real life drama that followed the actors while they were on the convention circuit years later.

Googled Quark the Series and came up with a mid season replacement show that aired 7 episodes in 1978. I was about 3 years old at the time.
Spoiler:
thats it. Quaark...in...SPACE!!

Red Dwarf is bloody brilliant. It's kind of like Rick and Morty in that it points our the absursidity of the univerese and how insignificant we are, but still truck on.
Dave is the last human being. He's lazy, not too bright, but morally he's a good person. He's screwed, but carries on.
Rimmer is basically a digital ghost. He's all the worst traits of humanity, but he's the closest thing to a human friend Dave has.
The Cat is the last descedant of Dave's cat from thousands of years ago. He's got all the selfish motivations of an acutal cat and an IQ of about room temperature.
Kryton is a service android who's sole purpose and reason for existing is to serve humanity.
They are all screwed, but they trudge through constant misadventrues, that are often the result of something stupid they did, because existing, with the glimmer of hope that something better will dome along, is better than not existing at all.

It was a fun summer film. Amazing-absolutely not.
Amazing: Raiders of the Lost Ark, African Queen, Bullitt,
Agree 100%. Fun film. I liked it. But it was very empty-headed and the praise for it was way OTT.
It wasn't even a Whedon film, but it went full Whedon* there at the end with the dance-off.
*Trying much too hard to be cute.
Agreed - ti was good - a mid tier marvel film - not as good as Thor 1 and 2, Iron Man, Avengers 1 and 2, and Cap A 2 IMO.
It was as good as IM 2 and 3, Ant-man IMO - better than Cap A 1, but that was by far the worst Marvel fim.
but as ever its all subjective.

I think this is being unfair. Sure Mal from Firefly is his defining role but not everything he's done relies on prior knowledge of that. Castle was good because he was excellent at playing the role of Castle and had great on-screen chemistry with Stana Katic as Beckett. Sure, they threw in the odd homage to Firefly occasionally but only ever as small easter eggs.
Dr Horrible was designed to be a geekfest for nerds and Captain Hammer was a great, funny character. With Whedon writing you don't need Fillion to bring the nerds, they will come anyway.

I think it should also be noted that Nathan is one of James Gunn's go-to actors. Seeing his name listed in a Gunn movie is roughly as surprising as seeing Harrison Ford in a George Lucas film
And actually, I think it's pretty great casting. While I doubt we'll actually see him as Wonder Man, and it'll just be a little Easter egg, I think if he was given the chance he'd be a perfect fit for the character.
