Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

UK

I think this film is one of the few times that saying a sequel pulled an Empire Strikes Back is genuinely appropriate. Take a fun, flashy but ultimately a tad shallow first movie, use the second to really let the characters grow and develop with a much more personal storyline.

Probably the second best Marvel sequel after Winter Soldier, it just does everything right. Stunning and inventive visuals, a cracking and moving script, and a killer soundtrack. What more could you want?

Just saw it a real breath of fresh air for a MCU film, just like the first was.

After disliking civil war and finding Dr Strange just a retread of Iron Man1, I really enjoyed this one.

Although I'll say this, Marvel trailers still suck. I only ever saw the adverts and maybe the teaser. And even then they was enough to influence the film negatively.

Not so sure about Stallone, though.

Well those were the original Guardians, less Yondu and Major Victory (the blue dude from the future who carries Cap's shield around). They seem to have put a fair bit of effort into casting those characters (I mean Miley Cyrus voiced Mainframe, for cryin' out loud!), so I hope that's not the last of them that we've seen.

I thought Scott Summers' (Cyclops' ) dad was one, too? Or was that another group of space-faring ne'erdo-wells?

Starjammers, not Guardians...

Major Christopher Summer, father of Cyclops and Havok (and Vulcan, if you accept that 6-issue add-on), leads the Starjammers, and royally pisses off the Shi'Ar empire on a regular basis. Not very dissimilar in attitude to how the Guardians were portrayed in the first movie. The badass female has a tail though in that though. And the big monster is named Ch'odd. No joke.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

It's really best for all concerned if we don't get into the Summers family tree...

So a different group of ne'erdo-wells. Gotcha.
But the family tree isn't that complicated. There's dad, a space pirate. There's Cyclops ( straight arrow), Havoc, less so (and dead IIRC). Then there's the grandson, who's older than his parents and grandparents due to time travel shenanigans, his evil clone and a third, genetically modified version from an alternate timeline.
I think that's pretty much it, right?

Who or what is "Mainframe" (in the context of this film; I'm not too bothered about the comics backstory)? I'm clearly not as well-versed with Ms Cyrus' voice enough to recognise her.

Havok is alive and well, and after becoming possessed by Apocalypse, Cyclops became kind of an ass, and even murdered Xavier after being possessed by the Phoenix (everything wants a piece of him now). He's bffs with Magneto and has been nailing Emma Frost for years now. He's gained a lot more depth in the past decade. But yeah, the Summers family tree is messed up. Way messed up. Cable is the most complicated character in all of Marvel. Far worse than the Spidey clones.

Saw a double feature of GotG and GotG Vol. 2 and had a good time. Without giving away anything I would just say if you like the first one you will most likely enjoy the second.

Saw it tonight, I really enjoyed it. I believe the GotG films are the best of the MCU and I like more or less all of the MCU movies.

Hard to say anything while not spoiling but the movie has a lot of heart and doesn't necessarily end as a happy ending but as a movie with its 3rd fully guaranteed.

You wouldn't be able to take Drax anyway as his reflexes are to quick.

I enjoyed this one. The beginning fight sequence was pretty cleverly done. There weren't any huge plot holes to deal with. The original definitely had more charm but this is still a solid movie and better than other superhero sequels have been lately (looking at you, DC comics).

Really good film,

Story is stronger than the first film, but as noted elsewhere the comedy is toned down for it - some of the bickering also felt a little forced, but given the happenings that's probably deliberate.

I thought the comedy felt like it was turned up myself. Drax in particular felt almost flanderized compared to the first film.

Yes, that's about it, apart from
Spoiler:
the daughter who comes from a different possible dark future, and became adoptive mother to the aforesaid grandson in his own dark future. And then there's Scott's other brother who was part of the real original X-Men who Xavier wiped from everyone's memory, who became evil and overpowered, and who then went into space to become emperor of somewhere or other. And then there was Adam X the X-Treme (the 90's, everyone!) who was implied to be Scott's half-brother, but I don't think it ever got confirmed. Oh, and then there was Madelyn, the clone of Jean Grey who was Cable's biological mother, who was abandoned by Scott, became evil for poorly explained reasons, died, and then got bought back by X-Man, Cable's Age of Apocalypse equivalent and they had, if not an explicit relationship, then a heck of a lot of subtext. And then there's Hope, but I didn't keep track of what her deal was.

Anyway, Guardians 2 was fun, with a good strong theme, and some great action sequences. Just what I wanted.

"The 75mm gun is firing. The 37mm gun is firing, but is traversed round the wrong way. The Browning is jammed. I am saying "Driver, advance." and the driver, who can't hear me, is reversing. And as I look over the top of the turret and see twelve enemy tanks fifty yards away, someone hands me a cheese sandwich."

Hm, I guess I'm going to buck the trend here and say I didn't like it very much.

Spoiler:
I mean I don't think it was BAD, but I didn't think it was particularly good either. I'd give it a solid 7. I think one of my problems with it is that the movie really focuses on showing Quill who he is and where he comes from, but it kinda falls flat because I never got the sense that those were burning questions for Quill. Quill already knows who he is, he's Star Lord, so finding about his dad and what exactly he is just didn't seem all that important.

I thought the ending was excellent though. Yondu seizing his one moment to do something right, the Ravagers showing up to give him a proper funeral, Quill's touching moment where he realizes he was his surrogate father, and Rocket seeing that everyone showed up for Yondu in spite of all he had done and being such an ass were all extremely well done. I also really enjoyed Nebula and Gamora opening up a little and filling out their history together, made me really appreciate Nebula's motivations and character.

That is one thing really worth highlighting. Despite it being an ensemble science fiction film with a large casts, everyone got character development.

Yup. Gamora and Nebula in particular - was massively pleasing to see them get developed into more rounded characters.

Also, I think I see how GotG will join in the Infinity War.

Loved it. Thought it was substantially better than the first one. The first fight scene and groot dancing definitely set the proper tone.

I kinda agree. Although I felt like songs themselves were used well enough, most of the songs just didn't "grab' me as much as in the first GotG.
Other than that, I cannot complain. I'm gonna see this one again

I love how they did the end credit sequences for this one. Having to wait through the entire credits just for a lame 5 second bit like the first one was painful for my bladder, but having 5, yes FIVE! end credits bits spaced out the way they were was very rewarding.
