Long live the king indeed. Long live volcano bird.

I'm liking Rodan a lot this time around - as I always do.

I just hope he isn't the sacrificial Kaiju here - other than Mothra, of course.

(Who will, I'm sure, also 'come back' like she always does!)

I strongly suspect we will see both Rodan and Mothra “die” in this picture. Mothra will of course actually die but leave behind eggs from which the next Mothra shall be born. Rodan’s “death” scene, by contrast, may be more of a sham: perhaps one of two Rodans is killed or perhaps Rodan is “killed” by plunging into an erupting volcano or similar, which turns out to be something more like going into hibernation to heal. In any event, both of these will either be swatted by Godzilla or King Ghidorah in order to demonstrate the strength of those two. My preference would be seeing King Ghidorah defeat Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra in separate fights then seeing some kind of team-up fight against Ghidorah in which Rodan and Mothra support Godzilla, allowing the real king to reclaim his throne.

The trio teaming up to beat Ghidora was a thing, so it’s rather what I expect to happen here when we specifically get the same trio.

It really isn't a spoiler when it has been done before and is most likely about to be done again, is it?

I'm OK with that happening - would make for a fun movie!

I think the only skinny Godzilla was the first US Godzilla. But we do not talk about that.

Seriously, have you guys watched Godzilla movies before?

I guess you mean me? Yeah, I have. I believe I've seen everything Godzilla.

My Fatzilla comment was kind of tongue in cheek. I don't really know how to express that without not bothering to post in the first place ... which I guess is also an option

My thoughts as well. After their individual fight films, subsequent films featured Mothra and Rodan as allies of Godzilla against the other monster more often than not.

This is exactly what I expect.

Eh I wasn’t posting a spoiler, just sepculating (and describing what I would ove to see) based on the “canon” of previous pictures. At this point in the franchise, I’m less concerned about seeing new stuff then seeing the traditions respected.

This one definitely looks to rectify the 'not enough of Godzilla' argument of the first one.

I'm still holding out hope that eventually the Criterion Collection and Sony would eventually gain the complete rights to distribute all Godzilla films from the Showa Era to the Heisei Era and Millennium Era respectively. Either that, or just have one company distribute the entire Godzilla film library in the states, but I have a feeling that's not gonna happen anytime soon.

Seeing more and more pics of toys. Mothra looks so weird.

Well, sure, point taken, a giant moth is inherently weird.

But she’s been radically redesigned for this film in a way that feels almost, er, anthropomorphic?

Sorry. I wasn't trying to be snappy or anything. I mean it quite literally! Mothra's design has always seemed kind of timeless to me. It just works. I'm not sure why anyone would want to redesign it.

I'm going to see a pic at some point and be weirded out, aren't I?

Um. Yup. Yeah that looks... Like someone took the monsters from the first movie and replaced their wings with butterfly wings.

Can't say I like it XD

"Her wings say moth but her waist says wasp." Not only is she more anthropomorphic now, but she kind of looks jacked. I think they were aiming for a sexy MMA fighter look?

Based on her head to body proportions, she's easily over 6ft tall...

I think that pose is doing it no justice. We have the shot in the trailers that shows it diving down from a side profile shot. The back legs don't look like its standing like that toy does.

Helps to give Mothra some effective limbs if you want it to be able to mix it up physically onscreen. Classic Mothra ain't very dynamic.

I think they wanted to move away from "this is just a giant moth" to "a creature that got called Mothra because it's wings look like a moth".

I know that this is a monster-fight movie, so you really need some suspension of disbelief, but having a giant moth-like creature is easier to swallow that simply a giant moth.

I think this is honestly the movie I am most excited for this year. There are big MCU movies, but there are big MCU movies every year so whatever. Godzilla, though? Stoked.

Yes, good point — but I think this is also an issue with Mothra, she’s not really meant to be a fighter in the same sense as Godzilla and Rodan, et al. She’s more of an avatar of peace and guardianship. But now she looks like she’s in for a tussle. Just weird.

To much Mothra talk not enough Rodan.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Not enough rodan to see to say much.
