Welcome all to the 52nd round of the Unofficial Painting challenge. For those who haven't seen the challenge before, it is a community-focused friendly competition open to anyone on the site, regardless of your skill level or experience. Every round contributes towards a League table, which ultimately means nothing but is a lot of fun to keep an eye on and jockey for position with Dakka's other painters.
This month, the theme is Mad Science. From the magical meddling of a mad mage to the abominations of science, from alchemical creations to cutting-edge technology, your entry should reflect the stranger side of science as appropriate to your chosen faction. From spells to steampunk to starships, go mad!
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of June and will end at midnight UK time on the 30th of June. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Going to enter a bonesinger and a techmarine, the mad scientist creators of their respective factions.
Both have been sitting in my to-do pile for far too long. I’ll try to grab a better proof pic, but here they are primed.
Spoiler:
(the fact that that pic was on my old green 4x8 I left behind in the divorce tells how long the tech has been waiting)
(he first shows up in a pic titled “Last supply drop of 2017” so he’s been patient as well
I had kitbashed an axe for the tech, but I think I’m going to magnetize his arm. More options these days. Plus I was never 100% happy with my work on the axe. Might just give him a thunderhammer to help with percussive maintenance.
Edit:
Better pic:

Dug out this genestealer cult mechanicus patriarch I made a few years ago before I lost interest in them. Might do a quick and dirty paint job on it between my current pieces

At first I was stumped at what I had that fit this category, but then I remembered the Servitor within the model Exorcist. So this month I am going to try and complete an Exorcist. Finally going to start replacing my battalion of painted Mark I tanks with Mark II.
There's already some cool stuff coming up here. Looking forward to seeing these models finished.
I'm going to continue picking appropriate models for my Biel-Tan to fit the monthly theme. This time out we have a flying tank built around a giant gun that operates by ripping open holes in reality. Mad Science indeed. Step (glide?) forward the Warp Hunter.

Hmm, I'm actually torn on what to do for this one. Spoiled for choice, as it were. I'd love to get in on the Techmarine party and see if I can do one as well as Nevelon or Rybrook (only with mine I'll do up his retinue of Servitors as well), but I don't really need one painted that badly. I also have a variety of Dreadnoughts that would probably qualify, a Tau Ghostkeel Battlesuit, a Ravenwing Dark Talon, and the Negavolt Cultists from Blackstone Fortress. I'm open to suggestions on what you'd all like to see me tackle for this month.
My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2024: 40 | Total models painted in 2025: 25 | Current main painting project: Tomb Kings

The Grotsnik Corp Bump Feelerer 9,000. It only looks like several bricks crudely gaffer taped to a cricket bat.
Grotsnik Corp. Sorry, No Refunds.
Wow, that is a cool bust!
For a change, I'm getting straight into it. I'm painting some grot power armour in the form of a kharadron conversion. The minute I saw them it made me think of the steampunk style goblins in world of Warcraft...will post proof pics soon.
Skirr and Skiver, Fancyman of Cornwall and Best Friend of your Mother's.
Think I’m going to go for some Blackstone Fortress models; UR-025, the Negavolt cultists and the spindle drones all fit the bill I think, just need to decide which ones to do.

Home for the weekend and managed to find my brothers old, dusty, busted up killa kans and a Finecast Big Mek. Been a while since I've done a Finecast model but I enjoyed painting up those orks last month so I decided to buy all his old stuff on the cheap

OK sign me up with another techmarine and servitors. These guys have been sat on a shelf literally gathering dust for ages so time to get some paint on them!
Here is my grot in power armour - the first in an all-goblin killteam...I've wanted to do this for months now, so I'm very excited to be able to fit him in.
I'm in. Back on orks now that my Skitarii Kill Team is painted, and I need another Big Shoota. I've wanted to loot this heavy stubba ever since I first saw it, and since it came in the Kill Team starter set, I finally got my hands on one. However, as with all puny 'oomie tech, it was too small to properly fit in an ork's hands, so this is the Mad Science that happens when a mek and a dok patch up an injury in the field. Ork wiv bionic arm:

I'll be aiming to get my Ambot done this month. I need to get some real progress done on my 'Munda stuff, since I'm arbitrating a campaign in the next few weeks.
Not gonna lie, I'm intimidated by the scheme I picked out. I'm going to make it look like a pre-heresy World Eater. I've never painted white before....

This topic would normally be perfect for me to come up with some of my usual madness however I know its going to be a really busy month at work so doubt I'll have the time to able to convert or make anything. will go trough my draws and see what's already built.
Nice conversion Queen Anne, seems you have all the skills both painting and converting
Cool models and good progress Jamie Shred, I really like the fallout stuff and have been tempted to get some on several occasions.
Great idea Chris56, what parts did use use, is it a combination of dwarf/Kharadron and Grot bits?

Thanks! Kitbashing is actually my favourite part of the hobby, the problem with that is if I do too much then I have to catch up when it comes to painting it all.
