How big? How's"I don't want to think about it" big?

I'm currently working on an Imperial Guard army with over 370 assorted infantry models. And I want more.

After that is my 30k Ultramarines army consisting of 150+ assorted Marines and 2-3 olde school Rhinos. I need to find a good Forgeworld model or two that can take on Knights, Dreadnoughts, and a Spartan. Got some ideas already from another thread.

Then it's Emperor's Spears, a small force that I'm promising myself I will only buy more models for once I finish painting the ones I have (already broke it three times, but I'm trying!)

Small amount of Thousand Sons I want to paint, and am keeping in order to paint, but have no idea what to do with them.

Then, in no particular order:

-Around 100+ 2nd edition Ork models.
-A pile of old Lou Zocchi Star Trek models (At least 5 Dreadnoughts, 9 Cruisers, and 30 Destroyers/Scouts. Probably underestimating).
-About a dozen Shapeways Starfleet Battles Models
-Around 50+ metal SFB and FASA models
-100+ small ships to use as PFs in Starfleet Battles
-200+ Fighters for Star Wars Armada
-3 Shapeways Armada ships
-30 Scouts and 30 Frigates from Star Frontiers
-Bunch of Dropfleet Commander ships, including a starter fleet +1 Cruiser, Battlecruiser and 4 Frigates per faction. PHR has one bonus Starter, and UCM has around a dozen special edition ships. Also three liners and four Centurions.
-BFG Chaos fleet with 40+ Frigates and 9 Cruisers
-BFG Imperial fleet with 1 Battleship, 3 Cruisers, 6 Frigates, and 4 Destroyers

...I don't think that's all of it. I need help.

Uuuuh...Too long to list Bunch of necrons, couple k's worth of orks, some AT titans, daemons, marines(which need purchaces to actually be usable). Oh and I'll be receiving few hundred models for LOTR which will be my next project(aiming to do 4 factions for 1000 pts each in 4 months...tale of 4 gamer style. And that doesn't even cover every model!).

No need to buy models for a while though I'm sure I'll fall to temptation again

Was doing good job on reducing it but then got couple good deals for LOTR...ah well. Good thing contrast fastens up the process. Once the models start arriving! How can shipping from UK take longer than from Japan :(

So, seriously, how do you people with huge backlogs cope with it? Don't you feel it sitting there, judging you?

I used to have a steamer-trunk just stuffed full of grey plastic, most of it still on the sprue and it was just terrifying. Nothing ever got painted because I couldn't handle the enormity of it all.

Then, after my latest big sell-off, I switched up some things and decided to never, ever have more than twenty minis sitting around unpainted. It's worked pretty well and I've been able to get through nearly 3,000pts of stuff in about eighteen months.

Except now I've broken my rules again and currently have 35 minis in my backlog and I am already feeling slightly overwhelmed by it.

So how do you do it? How do you persevere in such a seemingly Sisyphean endeavour?

Sort of. I spend a lot of time painting and make good progress finishing units on a fairly regular schedule, so it always feels as though I'm chipping away at it, even though it could easily take a couple of years of painting to finish it all. It's not so much the existence of the backlog that annoys me, but when I buy more stuff and add to it, because that feels like pushing back progress. I'm trying to limit how much I buy, but when a tempting box set or a good ebay deal comes along they're still hard to resist even though they'll just end up joining the back of the queue.

I can understand how some people find such a backlog so daunting that it stops them from making progress. For me it tends to go the other way. I feel motivated to keep painting, partly because if I can reduce the backlog, the less guilty I'll feel at buying new models.

I personally have gone through all my unpainted and catalogued them. The plan is to minimise spending on unnecessary purchases while I have a sea of grey to go through. It syarted because I needed to make some very particular custom Deathwatch and so had to accurately know which bitz to buy when they were in stock. After that I just catalogued everything and what I need to do on it. What needs to be bought, what needs built, stripped, undercoated, painted or just based.

Moving house 4 times in 12 months, you need to know exactly where everything is at all times.

For me collecting is the goal so the more, the merrier! I use my system and work from the top. Whatever is closest to completion gets done first unless something else is more urgent. I try to take part in the Unofficial Dakka Monthly competition and use it to guide my muse, so sometimes something from down the list takes priority but I try to take from the top as much as possible.

The more I work down the list, the more justified I feel in adding to it. So when those splash releases pop up or I get inspired for a new conversion, I dont feel bad spending £20 because £20 per quarter is completely fine. I spend more on paints that on models these days.

The other side is that half of my collection was painted pre-2013. Ie, Pre-Painting well. So its like giving my models a new lease on life and being so attached to models I've had for 10ish years, I love painting them and seeing them go from sloppy thick coats to respectable tabletop quality.

I have a bunch of kitbashed Incubi with the upper bodies and halberds of Melusai (I used the Melusai's snake-like lower bodies to make Sslyths). I haven't painted them yet, because I'm still undecided as to whether I should paint them the same color as the rest of my Drukhari army for visual cohesiveness or give them a distinctive color scheme (seeing as they're mercs, not kabalites).

I also have yet to paint a few Cadian heavy weapon teams (hate painting those for some reason), and some Space Marine infantry models for a White Scars army I haven't even gotten out of its carrying case since the start of this edition.

    Paint Spider Tank Mk3

Damaged Dakkajet needs converting to fighter craft (probably a Lightning or a Thunderbolt).

Only have a limited amount on the table to be painted at a time, and rotate new stuff in as you finish things.

One of the advantages of having lots of stuff to paint is that if you don't feel like doing one thing, you have something else to work on. I'm starting to feel rather fatigued by painting the same lizardman colors over and over again... but I really don't have that much else to relieve the monotony. I may have to buy something else to get a break from lizzies...

I also keep a very tight backlog because I find grey plastic abhorrent. I'm getting to the point where I'll turn down games if there's a chance of large amounts of grey plastic in the opposing force. In other words I've become somewhat of a hobby snob.

Luckily most players in my meta have older armies that are just about fully painted. It's the new, flavor-of-the-month meta units where grey plastic tends to rear its ugly face.

I never really had a backlog previously because I only buy what I know I can paint in a reasonable timeframe (and I’m a very slow painter because of work, life, and my own perfectionist tendencies). I did buy the Kill Team starter set last year, so now having painted the AdMech team, I still have all the buildings to complete (they’re at about 50% done) and the GSC team to paint.
I also found my old 2nd ed ork battle wagon which needs to be stripped, converted, and painted.
Lastly, I’d like another std ork boy for each of my four squads.
Once I get that done, it’ll be time for something new and shiny (gray).

I like the flexibility of being able to choose what I paint according to my mood. I have 4 small plastic drawers with 3 shelves in each, so have 12 different ‘armies’ to paint from at any time. Currently in my 12 tubs of shame I have...

    ~50 Night Lords CSM
Dark Vengeance CSM and Helbrute, still undecided on scheme for these guys
~10 Plague Marines and a bloat drone and blight hauler
~50 new CSM and Havocs that will be devoted to Slaanesh
    ~50 pox walkers and cultists
    ~30 various Ad Mech Infantry
A squad of 10 Scions and a Commissar
~30 various Primaris marines for Crimson Fists
    20 Deathwatch veterans
    ~20 various Necron infantry
    ~40 various GSC infantry
    Most of the BSF models.

I also have various partially painted vehicles on the go. There also hundreds of built but unprimed and unbuilt models lay around. I’ve recently started focusing on reducing the pile because it’s ridiculous now, so purchases have been sparse.

On the plus side, if I have time to paint, I will always have something I feel like painting. The negative being it can take a long time to put together a painted force useable for games.

    Imperial Soup
    2200pts/1750 painted
    2800pts/1200 painted
    2200pts/650 painted
    217pts/151 painted

That sounds like a great strategy. Certainly better than mine, but as you've noticed it can still lead to quickly feeling overwhelmed.

My solution is to spreadsheet it all. Everything I buy, have bought or want to buy is in a list with running totals of how much there is and how much is painted vs not. Out of the unpainted stuff, I mark 20-30 models as my immediate project and probably another 20-30 as what I want to work on next. When I think about buying something I have to ask if its going to go into the immediate bucket or if I'm willing to push back something in the next batch for it. I find I need to be able to shift things around, simply because the interests of others bounce around and new releases sometimes shift my own focus so sometimes I need to be able to focus on a game I hadn't planned to for a while.

I also do this. I keep a "hobby status" column for each unit I own that tracks their condition: "shipped, unbuilt, built, primed, basecoated, partially painted, painted."

All units that have not reached the "basecoated" stage are always top priority when I have hobby time. This minimizes the "value wasted" from owning unbuilt, unpainted models that take up storage space while seeing zero play, and maximizes tabletop readiness time for the stuff I buy.

Unbuilt/unpainted stuff receive bright neon yellow highlights on my spreadsheet and I never leave more than 2-3 units at this state. Currently have around 20 models out of ~650 that have no paint. Everything else is fully basecoated with the primary colors and proper basing. Washes, drybrush, edge highlighting, glow effects, and decals are generally saved for later unless we're talking about a big centerpiece monster or vehicle that will see play.

I refuse to field unpainted models out of pure vanity so the backlog is always short.

It can't stare at me when it's in a cardboard box.

All jokes aside, most of my collection comes from before I got back into 40k. I lived in one of the worst houses possible for painting (no insulation, windows that couldn't open, and a humid area; when I moved out and went back to finish things, the mold was so bad I couldn't breathe). Now in an insulated and air-conditioned house, I have far more time to paint than I ever did before.

Most of my non-40k stuff is either from old dead games or from stuff no one near me plays. Everything like that is currently in storage. I intend to go through it piecemeal and pull out stuff to sell. I've also cut back on buying and been focusing on painting.
