When GW releases models I like, I am motivated to buy them.

Road to Renown! It's like classic Path to Glory, but repaired, remastered, expanded! https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/778170.page

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

To be fair, in a realistic in any way setting, duels between commanding officers would not be the norm (yes I know this is 40k). A Yarrick vs Ghazghkull story would be more of a campaign rather than a battle, with a series of battles with both asserting dominance regionally before a big clash. It would be Yarrick trying to hold the line vs a combined arms and sophisticated ork force holding out for reinforcements, with Ghazghkull rushing in to strike the killing blow. Less a duel and more a human trying to hold out.

Then the Space Marines land and force Ghazghkull to withdraw, as he doesn't have the forces on hand to deal with both the Guard and the Space Marines. Yarrick wins in the sense that his forces held out, but just barely and with a huge body count, and he personally took a beating, while Ghazghkull wins in that once again he defeated Yarrick, who was only saved by the timely arrival of the marines. Have the fluff note that due to the high body count, and material costs of the theater of war is deemed untenable and thus the remaining imperial forces are forced to abandon the system to the Orks for the time being.

So basically it'd be Armageddon again.

Do we really need any explanations why we getting new models? I say nay.. I don't care for some shoehorned weak sauce garbage telling my why my dudes suddenly have new sculpts (or are a bit taller and have 2 wounds...)

They seemed to have really got hanged up on this big time with the whole primaris thing. It really doesn't make an iota of a difference to a lot of the fan base why new models as long as we get new(and better) models for our faction of choice.

Seems GW still suffers from the rampant "relaunch" culture to drive sales rick priestly talked about.

I feel like they feel like they have to justify things in the setting or else people won't buy into them on the table. I still suspect the relaunch is more an effort to break up chaos versus loyalists more and give both sides a stronger personal flavor while creating a product that veterans are more likely to buy than slightly larger versions of models they already have.

So on a related note I've decided with this upcoming box set to dig out my old ABR Orks and build those, problem is, the instructions are looong gone, anyone know where I can find a PDF so that I don't screw up?

I'd agree if such a rivalry was established in the fluff prior to this.

Say it wasn't the Woofs in this book. Say it was the Imperial Guard, and that GW were using this event as a reason to give us a big new plastic Ghaz and a nice new plastic Yarrick. That holds some weight. Their rivalry is fierce. They've faced each other at least 3 times from what I recall (2nd & 3rd War, plus Ghaz once captured Yarrick and let him go as he liked having the sport IIRC).

Their big meeting in this event would be a Big Deal™.

For Ragnar however they've had to invent a whole previous confrontation out of whole cloth just to set this one up. As Hybrid said, that makes this seem very forced.

This.

It IS very forced and it looks like it’s going to be poorly written.

This is my worry with the book, I couldn’t really care less if Ghazzy gets beat by Captain Doggo if it’s done well. A random fight because of some Wolf visions though? Them ‘killing each other‘ (but both totally still surviving guys!) off camera? Lame.

There are no stakes here. We knew neither would actually die before this was released. We didn’t even get a resolution in their off camera pre fight for god’s sake. The story so far has made Ragnar an even bigger Mary Sue and has made Ghazzy a ‘not really a threat’ threat. I don’t think that was GWs intention, somehow.

Yarrick should be permanently retired (with the rest of Guard characters). He was pulled out of retirement for Armageddon 3, so by now he will be ancient. If the Indominus (spelling?) Crusade was a couple of centuries most humans would have retired (permanent or otherwise).
I tend to avoid these discussions, but as a Yarrick lover I feel inclined to weigh in. They easily could have slotted Yarrick into this story line and it wouldn't have even been forced. So after Armageddon 3, Yarrick and the Black Templars went crusading to hunt down Ghaz and finally bring him to justice. Cue the end of A3.
Jump forward to post-Indominus M42. and Ghaz has returned bigger and better then ever. Now at this point just about any living human would be dead through old age alone, especially someone has old as Yarrick who was already old during the 2nd War. But with aid of ill-understood Cryo-stasis archeotech, the Old Man appears fit and able and ready to finally destroy his Nemesis!
Montage a quick chase sense across a couple of systems, the trading of a few pot shots here and there, and then finally *The Battle*!
They duke it out until Yarrick gets the upper hand, snips old mates noggin off and believes the threat finished. Heroically dies of his horrific wounds, but doesn't live long enough to see some cretin make off with the head. Screen-wipe to Mad Dok stitching the head back on, laughing like a nutter.

Conclusion.
Imperials get what they want; A BAMF doing BAMF things like cutting the head off the most violent ovesized fungus in more then 700 centuries.
Orks get what they want; Orks winning something, and more importantly, Orks winning THE Duel.
The story moves forward and we managed to kill of a named character.
Everyone wins!

Yarrick may be a pretty bad ass comissar, but at the end of the day he's an old human being, the idea of him beating Ghaz in a hand to hand duel is Ludercris.

even as a IoM fan I'd call bs if Yarrick beat (even temporarily) Ghaz.

Needlessly. Heh.

PA5 came out in mid-late Feb, from memory. SoB remainder goes on pre-order on Saturday, and I'm not going to be surprised if we get SG stuff on the preview on Sunday. PA6 to go on pre-order on 28/3, maybe?

I hope not! Id prefer it to be the 21st for preorder! I have a doubles tournament in Warhammer World in May and I want that damn book for my Orkz

Given the number of kits coming out for the Sisters int he next pre-order window, I'll be very surprised if they follow it with a second sequential 40k release weekend.

I don't think we're due anything for AOS - unless the Giant book arrives out of the blue - but we've seen previews of a number of things for smaller games that might crop up. Given I believe he crops up in the new WD, this might be the ZOAT weekend.

Greater Good dropped on 15th Feb after the pre-order of 8th.

It's very unlikely, given the preview and where we are in the month, that we don't see pre-order on 21st for a 28th release for Saga.

It's already dragging a week behind what is "normal" for the PA schedule and both SW and Ork players are becoming impatient.

GW are going to do what they think is going to maximise revenue. They also seem to operate on the idea that "40k players" only have so much to spend and, for some reason, they'll spend iton whatever is released for the game.

This is why I doubt that the pre-orders going up on 14/03 (known to be the Sisters wave) and 21/03 would both be for 40k.

They're more likely to space things out by at least a week, especially if this thinly-sourced rumour of a Forgebane-level boxed set turns out to be true.

And let's be very honest here - no-one's feelings matter to a corporate entity's decision-making process.

Yeah, most of my armies are just toys that I think are cool, to be honest. I'd play all of them if I had infinite time, but I'm happy to keep most of them just looking rad on the shelf.

Orks are both really easy and really tough to paint. They are so craggy that they take really well to washes, and you can hide a lot under grime and rust. On the other hand they are very detailed models so if you want to paint an entire horde of them and hit all of the details it takes a long time.

It is the job of Xenos to die to show how cool Space Marines are. Clearly. We are second class factions and NPCs only, Marines are the protagonist main characters.

No point in getting upset about it.

40k essentially made it very clear that if you're sufficiently important in the Imperium you can be rejuvenated and kept alive for centuries more than 25 years ago.

Really there's no need to have popular characters die of old age in 40k.

Rejuve treatments only last so long. Even higher up Inquisitors cant last forever on them, like
Spoiler:
Erasmus Crowl from The Carrion Throne.
Eventually, the treatments wont work anymore
The biggest issue is how old and decrepit Yarrick is portrayed in some stories. Sure, he livens up in battle, but besides that, hes like a walking corpse, pre the great rift. The only solution is to have his ship get lost in the warp for a few months, and comes out during the Indominus Crusade

It would make sense, but him not having a box available doesn't mean much.
Look how long it took for GW to release:
*The Arch Revenant
*The Ogor Tyrant
*The Arch Regent
*Big Boss on Squig
*Skaven Warlock with Doom Rocket
Etc.

At least Ad Mech have a bunch of confirmed models coming out so his release seems to be given, but GW has been guilty of releasing exclusive models in boxsets, and then providing no alternatives once said boxset goes OOP.

In which they don't actually fight. Ragnar gets stuck in combat with a small Evil Sunz mob, and Njal scares Ghaz off at the end of the battle (turn 3). The point of reference this book is using for this confrontation is solely itself.

The fight was an excuse to primaris-ize Ragnar. Characters existing already don’t go through the process unless they’re already in a life or death situation because it can be potentially fatal. GW already put that in the lore. They needed a reason for Ragnar to get the treatment. Maybe it’s “comic book plot” to some, but GW lore shouldn’t be on the same level as Shakespeare. Comic book level works perfectly. Killing a major threat while suffering mortal wounds, waking up in a new body only to find out the threat you gave up everything for to wipe out somehow survived is...pretty standard Sci-Fi storytelling. I think a bunch of people need to unwind their panties here. I don’t even LIKE Space Wolves (hate them, actually), and have zero issue with how they handled this.

If you want Shakespeare level writing in 40k...you’re asking for something you’ll never get and were never promised. So give that up. 40k has always been about “fun”, not about “high literature”. If you’ve set your expectations too high, that’s your own problem.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.
