No company in the history of the world has ever treated customers as badly as GW. I knew years ago that GW were sabotaging their own Indomitus production so that only royalty would be able to get the boxes. Their conspiracy to make only ten boxes for the entire world will net them billions more than if they'd made as many copies as they could reasonably manufacture/store/distribute....

Bank of America forclosed on houses that had already been fully paid off, because keeping track of paperwork is hard. United Fruit Company tried to overthrow a government.

GW is not perfect, but overreacting and hyperbole don't do any good.

1) How the hell do you know what's an appropriate amount for this shop? Or for any other that you're not running?
What's that? You're going to complain that they sell on EBay etc? So what. Since the sun rose on this century it's been hammered home that if your in retail, you have to embrace on-line sales options. But then people like you bitch when that lesson is applied.

Because I have an actual head on my shoulders and can do basic math?

There is no way, shape, or form that $30k worth of Indomitus sets is appropriate for any venue that isn't a freaking convention that's booked solid with just 40k players as just an opening weekend for the new edition.
For the people in the back:
Assume a 45% discount for a trade account:
$199*.45=$89.55
199-89.55=109.45

So they pay $109.45/Indomitus.
Now take that 30,000/109.45.
That gets you 274(rounded down) sets.

Now tell me again why you think that's reasonable for week one for a hole in the wall shop?

2) Well according to their FB page they're open right now, Noon-7pm Tue-Thur/Sat & Noon-9pm Fri. Just how sure are you that they aren't open to foot traffic?

"Foot traffic" means people walking in and out browsing. Sorry, I should have made that more clear to the haters in the back. Because that's the kind of thing that can motivate these weirder purchases.

So if this place thought they could move $30k worth of product? More power to them & Good Luck.

Cool, so screw everywhere else then?

Because really, where do you think all of those sets are coming from? The pool of sets allocated for independents.

The two stores I use have both sold out, both within about 5 minutes of pre-orders going up. One of those stores had a 1 per person limitation as well.

It can't be pre-ordered from the GW Australia website anymore. Not sure if it sold out in 5 minutes but otherwise icegoat was pretty accurate in their assessment.

The other three stores I would order from have all sold out. One of them didn't even have enough stock to last 2 minutes.

Heard cutting # stores receive was not due to stock but because stores already took preorders for them and even faciliating splitting boxes. Both being against trade terms.

Did any store that did not allocate preorders get # cut?

Thanks to this thread I checked in on my *very* local nerd store and they indeed had an inofficial preorder list. Out of 15 ordered Monday they had 6 left, so I ordered there instead of online. Even if they only get 10 I should be safe that way. And they have 15% off over 100€ I think.

Looking at the sprues I guess they will release a box sans the 4 single sprues for characters as a non-limited version. If not, they'd have to release SCs based on the contents pretty fast or have a ton of characters unavailable. Unit kits will probably drop soon. The Primaris at least I find the whole limited thing a bit stupid, both as a customer and from a business PoV - as if a new boxed set wouldn't sell like hotcakes, anyway - but besides walking across the street from work it doesn't affect me. Probably.

Because they are also an online store? The 'big' online stores in the UK also all have actual retail locations, many of which are pretty small. they might not shift many copies locally but they could all shift that online.

Stuck in the snow.

I find it very hard to believe that GW wouldn't put out a standard availability starter box for this edition. I can see two possible reasons why they wouldn't have made a comment on any boxes beyond Indomitus.

1) The standard starter box is very similar to Indomitus but priced similar to Dark Imperium and they were worried the standard box would cannibalize sales of Indomitus.

2) Due to shutting down for Corona they weren't able to finish production of the planned release so they released only Indomitus (a limited special edition version of the starter box) in order to still meet their usual "big summer release" window.

I honestly think that 1 is the more likely option though seeing as Indomitus is launching alongside all of the usual support products (cards, accessories, objective markers) which probably means everything has been done for a while.

Or possible option 3) GW is going to try a bold new strategy of not having any easily accessible starter product this edition.

One problem with starter sets is they only have two armies in them. They are a fantastic deal, but you have two random armies in them. If you don't like either army they are useless; if you only like one you've got to find someone else to swap with which isn't always possible, esp if you're very new and just walked into the store. I also think that they help reinforce popularity in key armies like Marines that often feature which can be a detriment to sales of other armies.

Personally I could see GW introducing a starter pack of glue rules clippers etc... - ergo one stop purchase that gives you all the tools to game with and then have people pick their "Getting Started" set from the army they want to play. That way you have a totally free for all open starting setup. You can go for ANY army and you don't have to split it with someone else. You aren't "limited" to just one of two armies either.

The store I mentioned earlier was allocating preorders and had their order number UPPED by GW after being informed originally they'd only get 45. GW doesn't care if they're doing it as long as sales happen.

that and two start collecting sets is way more than a starter set though. GW needs a cheap intro option for people who know nothing about 40k and don't have others to play with

I've heard second hand rumours from two distinct FLGS owners exactly this. Apparently there won't be a classic starter set with two large forces and the BRB but only two smaller ones, like Know No Fear and First Strike.
It seems that the large starter set like Dark Imperium was bought mainly by experienced hobbyists while new ones stick to either the two small ones or the various Start Collecting boxes for their chosen armies.

Just over ten minutes to go before orders can be placed here in Sweden. Looks like the stores here are expecting many orders for this, hope I manage to snag one. The clock is ticking! I better make some more tea.

Even GW store managers don't get much if any heads up ahead of gamers either.

That said I can see logic in it. Experienced players already know the pathways to split joint army boxed sets. Sure its a pain but they know how to do it and are more prepared. A newbie its actually introducing a hassle into the getting started phase of the game - a point in time when you want the least amount of hassle for them.

GW is already making more "push fit" getting started sets like the new Slaves to Darkness to make it even easier to get an army together where you don't even need glue. Just mash the plastic together and you can play a few games within 5 mins of opening the box.

Removing the need to join with a friend or limiting you to two armies for a whole edition etc... makes sense as a marketing move; esp as the old "Battallions" which were once marketed as army expansion sets; are now "Getting Started" sets for the same price (or near enough) and are marketed as where to begin.

Yeah, I saw that and managed to get the items in my shopping cart but then the site got overloaded. Eventually managed to complete the checkout process almost 10 minutes later. Now we'll wait and see how long it takes for them to sell out.

Because of this we won't be making models to represent many of the options allowed to a Veteran squad - it's up to you to convert the models. (Imperial Guard, 3rd Edition)

Ordered from GW in the end.

Due to connection issues, wound up with two copies in my basket. Figured best to just crash ahead rather than remove one.

I shall find a good home for it!
