Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

One of my favorite game intros is the Dawn of War intro movie where it shows Orks and Space Marines facing off...if you haven't seen it, you can find it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFkFo5SBx-g

Where are the plans for a 40k movie? We've got two games, several expansions, a tabletop hobby game, a fantasy MMO...where's the Warhammer 40k movie?

I went to see 1.5 hours of almost nonstop fighting, interspersed with cliches and Imperium mantras. A lot of the Warhammer 40k books offer a decent plot / story / etc, it couldn't be that hard to make a movie with a good story. Hell, the story behind Dawn of War would make a good movie.

Whatcha folks think?

Ah, the famous hour and half of brain death. Movies come in pre-cut, pre-assembled, pre-painted deals. There is no imagination in Hollywood anymore. How could you possibly tell a great visual story in 90 minutes? Look at the LotR movies, The Dark Night, etc. etc. Are they 90 minutes? No.

If a Warhammer 40k movies was to be made, they would need to be around 2.5 hours long and be atleast a triology. However, that is why it will never be made [or atleast made, staying true to the epic-ness of 40k].

I would love to see it, but only if it got made the proper way.

And I swear if Uwe Boll ever makes it, I will move to another country.

I agree with Overboss,I think they won't stay true to the original fluff and if it is based on the dawn of war games IT MUST!!!,be the first game as the other two where *@$%*&&!!!!

Heres the thing, in order for there to be a movie made 40k will have to reach a high level of popularity. This IS possible, but alas tabletop gaming is too much of a niche hobby to ever reach the masses. But I am quite optomistic, games like dawn of war 2 have given 40k alot more exposure to the general public, I actually am hearing rumors of a 40k MMO....which would be...insane to say the least. But if you look on the videogame forums there are still alot of people who think world of warcraft was the inspiration that created dawn of war, where we all know its the opposite, so people still are not familiar with our beloved 40k universe. Slowly but surely hardcore gamers will learn and come to appreciate the fluff aspect of 40k...ive seen it happen on the ign.com forums already, people are really curious to understand what 40k is all about, which is great! So i guess it could be the first step to more 40k products that are offered to the masses, which who knows could one day lead to a movie...maybe....

For the non believers, just look at harry potter....i Know thats an extreme example, but the same could happen here.

I'm ok with 2.5 hours+. I just want to see a movie full of Imperium cliches.

Scene:

Inquisitor Harkim looked down at the trembling man and rumbled forth his verdict: "Thought begets heresy. Embrace death now cleansed by the flame of the emperor!" Inquisitor Harkim fires his boltgun into the doomed man, and looks up to see many pairs of narrowed and bloodshot eyes peering angrily at him from the advancing shadows.

Harkim unshouldered his Thunderhammer while drawing an arcane symbol in the air before him. "Come then, chaos filth! For I shall know no fear and shall grant you the compassion of the Imperium!"

Etc etc, fight fight fight...

It would be great to see the Sabbot crusades done on the big screen. Wasn't there talk about a 40K movie about ten years back? What ever happened to that?

The only way 40k would get a lot more exposure, especially with the fluff is for people to play the game more. The only problem with that is that people who don't have a lot of disposable income can't really get into playing.

For example, I am someone who can barely afford to have any money left over from paycheck to paycheck to spend as I see fit. The majority of my army came from the Orks in the AoBR set. That's why I have 70 or so Boyz that haven't been painted yet.

Judging from the fan base from Warhammer Online + DoW2 , its impossible for GW to rake in enough funds to make any decent movie.

Even starcraft will get better chance of a movie.

I wouldn't mind a Starcraft movie either, but it would have to follow the same guidelines that I said about the 40k movie

I don't think that you need huge amounts of disposable income to get into Warhammer. I participate in whatever tournaments that I can; RTTs and such. I tend to do pretty good, so I supplement my army with store credit.

I played in an RTT today and took first place and ended up with $70 of store credit. That got two boxes of stormboyz and another box of boyz.

A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!

It simply can't be done, it would be the most brutal movie ever and it would take ages to make (if they wanted to make it good anyhow). It'd simply be too metal for human eyes.

Dude, if I got to see orks and space marines chop each other into bits for a few hours in a cinematic venue, I'd get freakin' optical implants if I had to!

Would you want it to be film, cartoon, CGI, etc, what? I'm assuming actors. In which case, could be a good chance to kill off a few... bad actors.

That's all I'm saying.

I believe it had been optioned, but that was a rumor. Honestly I can't believe that GW would ever let their IP get raped by the likes of Uwe Boll.

If they ever made a 40k movie, I wouldn't accept anything less then rated R. Cause if it wasn't restricted then theirs not nearly enough violence and gore... thus instantly crappy movie.

Not a cartoon or CGI (although I could live with well done CGI I suppose), but actors and a film. Maybe with Peter Jackson doing a collaboration with whomever did 300 to bring us a fantastic movie full of blood and gore. =p

I see no viable possibility of a 40K movie, in the current climate.

Back in the late 90's early 00' GW was working with a CGI film company on a CG movie based on that Blood Angels comic book. I followed its progress for awhile as they released clips of CGI space ships, dreads, and so on. But I kinda of lost track. To bad they never finished it.

I can't see any reason why they can't make a 40K film, it would easy to base it around the Imperial Guard to make sure that the general masses who are not familiar with 40K can understand and enjoy it. Joe Bloggs would not have any interest in seeing Kroot lead a victory against Char IV for example, only a 40K player would.

It would only then be a matter of adding Marines and other races into the story line to include a diverse plot with each army getting some limelight. Just look at lord of the rings for examples on how it could be done with mixed races allying with each other on both side, elder and Men, orcs an goblins.

The only issue is that the film would therefore be bias to every 40K player that doesn't collect Imperial Guard as the IG will be made to look the hero's. If the film was made with Tau as the lead charactors for example then it would be highly unlikely to get the same interest from the general masses. In short they'd have to make 9 or so films so that each army gets some glory and i REALLY don't see that happening lol

I can't imagine a 40k film having Tau centerpiece.

I'd think Space Marines would be centerpoint, and they'd be standing against Orks. Maybe Orks invading a world that the IG is trying to fight them back while the Space Marines step in to help. Heck, take Dawn of War and turn it into a movie - all the races get introduced (the important ones anyway =p )

I think if you start introducing too many armies, it's all going to be storyline about politics and being allies - not enough focus on war.

You can't just have 1.5 hours of mindless action... that would get so damn boring so fast. It would be like eating an entire container of cake icing... :p

A proper movie would need actual character development and honestly... only the Imperial Guard and possibly Space Marines are going to be able to fit this bill as well as have the audience identify with them.

the first movie would have to do alot. it would have to introduce all the races, xplain the dark age of technology, the horus heresy, chaos , and a ton of the Imperium's history. id have to say it would have to star a space marine chapter(if its blood ravens ill kill myself because they arent a real chapter). and they would prolly have to fight chaos, nids, or maybe orks to draw in an audience whos never ever heard of Warhammer 40k

id love to see the movie based on the IG because nothing says Imperium of Man like millions of guardsmen charging across no-mans-land and shoving their bayonets into the cultists skulking in the opposite tenches, while hundreds of Leman Russ and Basilisks give them covering fire and a titan squashes a bunker by stepping on it and then mowing down the rest with is Vulcan bolter thingy. But nothing will seems as badass to stupid non-players as a SM's killing xenos while taking an obscene amount of damage and not loosing a single man. lol you can tell im a bitter IG player

Maybe but if it was Impy Guard vs Tau with the Tau being Space Communists essentially it would have made alot of money in the 80's thanks to the cold war and be lauded as a great example of the then current super power relations

But its a shame it would never be done, if it did i've always thought that a trilogy explaining the Horus Heresy would fit the bill nicely, say having told through the eyes of a Farseer, 1st film would be the Battle of Isstvaan 3 when everyone turned traitor, 2nd battle for Isstvan 5 and the imperium being torn apart, 3rd movie the battle for terra. Simple enough, or in fact basing it around the Gaunts Ghosts novels, I mean the books are essentially Sharpe in space, and I think they would crossover into a movie format quite well.

Man, I need to go read the novels or something - I don't know any of this background that you're talking about.

I think it could be successful too; I'd like to see a cross between Dune + Transformers + 300. That would be a heck of a 40k movie.

I say the movie would have to be based around the Horus Heresy, cause that's like the background of the whole universe.
