I only turned away for a second, and this blog shoots off again I'm starting to think it's me... Lovely army shot. Sounds like you had some great, and dare I say, competitive games - as well as lots of fun (the important thing). What more could one ask for?
Glad to hear you won a best painted army! Looks like the tournament was great fun, can't wait to go to another one myself. Lovely work on the army, nice to see it all painted!
Better to sit quietly and look the fool than to open your mouth and confirm the fact!
Thanks Reaper, appreciate that! Wish I could rest on my laurels but I have a lot of work to do yet before Adepticon. Have another day or so of R&R but then it's back on the horse for me.

Hi Gits. Not sure if I have missed this somewhere back through the pages as I tend to skip some of the text these days and just look at the pretty pictures, but has anyone suggested using the Legion Reconnaissance Squad rules from the first Horus Heresy book for your sniper units? Obviously, it would only be an option in friendly games, but it would be a perfect fit. Personally, I'd be happy to port the rules in directly from the Legion rules straight into a Codex army, just because of Rule of Cool. They are basically marines who have scout, outflank, acute senses and have a few cool options such as sniper rifles for 5 points, cameleoline and recon armour...
Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.
Sadly, I don't yet own a copy of it myself, or I would photograph the page and email it to you. If you can acquire that page of the book though, I would recommend it.

Holy schneikies Batman, I have two images on the gallery front page! Quick everyone... Go vote before its too late!

Well, I'm not actually IN Chicago anymore... up in Wisconsin now. But it's an easy 2 hour trip down so it's no big.
Have begun my next project. Couple of Mk-1 Razorbacks for Yellowbeard's Fire Hawks. These won't be fancy, just the basics so he can field them. They he can do the detailing on them himself. I'm still assembling, when I actually get to the painting, I'll post.

Let no one who owns an airbrush, say that there's not enough time to do a basic paint job...
I'm passing on A couple of Mk-1 Razorbacks that were generous gifts to me by a total stranger & fellow Dakkanaught. Giving them to a team mate who didn't heed 4 months of warnings that he needed to get painting... *sigh* Thought I'd help him out by getting them painted up to at least a basic standard. They're far from done... still need some airbrushing touch-ups and all the metal done, but from bare plastic to this took about 90 minutes (including gloss coat & drying time). Far from my best work, but it'll exceed any 3-color requirement (actually has 5 colors just for the blending) and even though this picture is far from flattering, they look really good from a tabletop viewing angle. I'm also doing top doors and one set of alternate hatches so they can be run as rhinos. Don't give me that crap about it not taking long because I'm an expert airbrusher... this is me hosing down the tanks with paint... has nothing to do with my expertise.
Next come the airbrush touch-ups and a sepia wash. Then the metal bits. Think that's where I'll stop... he-who-shall-not-be-named can do the rest. I tried to stick as close to the prescribed colors as possible, unfortunately I was missing the base brown & had to substitute and couldn't help but do a wee bit of up-highlighting at the end. The Sepia wash should tone everything down nicely. I think were I to invent the scheme... I'd start with a nice, rich mahogany and move up through the current color set so there's a bit more distinction in the darker shades.

Thanks guys... the picture isn't the best either... the tanks look a bit artificially yellow. While there are some fairly yellowish highlights... they're quite limited as to their placement. Must be the light box & the viewing angle of the camera. I should have one more pic before the night's over. I'd like to get the washes on before bed so they can thoroughly dry overnight. I'm going to try to use the airbrush to apply them, knowing that brushing washes over large, flat surfaces rarely yields satisfying results. Washes don't usually work too well in an airbrush though... they're thin, but not made for airbrushing. I've got an idea however, so we'll see how things go.

Nice work. It may not take skill to douse the models in paint, but it DOES take skill to know where the paint should (roughly) go.
I really like em, though whats the base color? It almost looks like a gray-brown. The pics give me a very weird two-tone effect.
Second WIP. This is close to done. Need to finish the plasma coils and the lights/lenses and that's about all I'll do. Just want to get it far enough to be fieldable & Yellowbeard can do the rest if he likes. This way he can always come back at some later time and "make it his" by adding detail.
** Wow, ninja'd twice between building the post during the commercial breaks of The Walking Dead!
Good to have you checking out the blog Casey, thank's for stopping by!
Realized I didn't actually make any comments on the painting when I posted the new pic. As you can see, the sepia spray mellowed things out very nicely. The highs are lower and the whole tank has a rich, warm color now & is much more uniform in it's appearance. My son loves it, says it looks like a "real tank" with the more natural colors. I'm going to have to do some more of these for my army. I really love working with the original rhinos. Luckily I picked up an on-sprue rhino chassis from someone at my FLGS to replace one of the ones I'm giving to YB so I'm able to keep up the motorpool.
@Ramos: I used Vallejo's "olive drab" as the primer... I think that's what was dominating that early picture in the darker shades. I did spray over it but the lighting was making the primer color come through.
