So this Sunday I have a second 'ard boyz prep game. Its the last game I can play before my trip to NC for work. I'll be trying to get more prep games in while in NC (theres a store in Jacksonville). Anywho, heres the lists we have for this round:

Notes: If you followed my last rep, you'll notice the list has changed. I cut 1 baal for 2 HF/MM speeders, and cut sponsons from the other baals (the sponsons didn't do much last game). With the spare points I upgraded my chaplain to lemartes and added a second PW to the death co, and changed from a DC dread to a furioso. AV 13 is sweet in CC!

So an interesting UM list....

Mission: Kill Points
Deployment: Spearhead

I win the roll off and take first turn, deploying in the bottom right corner. Hank just deploys his Devs and Scouts. Heres how the board looks:



Hank reserves everything else, and I scout move the baals up. Hank choses not to try and seize!

Blood Angels Turn 1
I move everything up, spreading out. Not much else to say.

Shooting! I blast his scouts and kill em all. I manage to kill 1 lascannon dev as well!



Kill Points: BA 1 - SM 0

End of turn thoughts: So, hes gonna come at me piecemeal... shouldn't be too bad; cept all his twin linked lascannons will put the hurt on my ravens! gotta keep em boosted til more comes in...

Relictors Turn 1
Nothing to move.

Shooting! He pens mephs raven and blows off the multi-melta :(

Kill Points: BA 1 - SM 0

Blood Angels Turn 2
My one squad of AM's in reserve stay there. I move around my stuff, and boost the ravens to the boardedge to try and force hank to come in all on one side.

Shooting! Devs go down



Kill Points: BA 2 - SM 0

End of Turn Thoughts: Gotta hope his alpha-strike isn't too bad....

Relictors Turn 2
=Hank gets in Lysanders raider, 1 lascannon razor, and his pred. Not too bad! Everything moves on in the top right corner.

Shooting! I make a bunch of cover, but in the end, he explodes my DC raven, killing 1 dude.



Kill Points: BA 2 - SM 1

Blood Angels Turn 3
Finally, stuff to go after! I get in my AM squad and combat squad em, landing half behind the hill on my right, and the other half scatters far to the board edge next to his razor. The rest of my army spreads out, my dread/DC move outta the crater they were in. Both speeders move 12's to block the front of the raider. And my far left baal in the forest immobilizes itself :/

Shooting! My combat squadded AM's immobilize and wep destroy his razor... damnit. My speeders explode lysanders raider. Everything else doesn't do much.



Kill Points: BA 3 - SM 1

End of Turn Thoughts: UGH! wish that razor woulda went down :/ At least 1 raiders down and he only has a pred for AT on the field for now... lesse what happens! I need to respond to whatever he does quickly or he'll blast me up!

Relictors Turn 3
He gets in 1 HB razor and his dread. They come in at the top left of the board. His pred pivots, and his tac squad gets outta the razorback. Lysanders terms roll low for terrain and just decide the speeders look tasty.

Shooting! His terms wreck 1 speeder. His dread misses the rear of my dread. His HB razor kills 1 marine I think... His tac squad that got out, combined with his predator, kill my combat squad down to 1 guy.... who flees for his life 13".

Assault! His terms wreck the last speeder.



Kill Points: BA 3 - SM 2

Blood Angels Turn 4
Damn terminators... My DC HAVE to go at them. Sigh, well see what happens. My DC and dread move to engage his terms. My last guy + 5 man combat squad move to charge his 5 tacs. My raven boosts back over to the corner. My marines all spread summore.

Shooting! My AC's all fail to do anything to anything.

Assault! My DC charge over my speeders + my dread. I manage to kill all his terminators while he manages to kill 2 DC + my dread. Bleh... In a shocking turn of events, my 6 AM's kill 2 marines and he kills 1 back, and due to stubborn sticks :/



Kill Points: BA 4 - SM 3

End of Turn Thoughts: UGH! horrible.... This games gonna go downhill fast if I don't get rid of some of these tanks! And stubborn tac squads? Its like fighting sisters all over again :(

Relictors Turn 4
He gets in his other raider + lascannon razor and squad. The squad comes in to assist his tac squad. His raider rolls on and the squad gets out, but it'll be hard for him to reach me due to terrain... His pred moves up over the hill in front of it. His dread and razors in his left side shuffle to shoot my raven.

Shooting! He fails to do... well, anything. His lascannons either miss, fail to damage, or get cover saved.

Assault! His new terms fail their DT rolling snake eyes. His other 5 man tac jumps into combat with my AM's... I kill 1 marine, he kills the last marine from my other combat squad, we stay stuck. Lysander murders my DC down to just a PW and lemartes. Ewww.....

Kill Points: BA 4 - SM 4

Blood Angels Turn 5
Time to get some KP's! Meph gets outta my raven to charge his dread. My raven flat outs. My baals stay put. My AM's move around to engage various targets.

Shooting! I stun his pred, but cronus allows him to ignore it :( All the rest of my shooting doesn't do much (blasts the last lascannon razorbacks weapon off). Oh, I do manage to wreck his lascannon razor that was immobile.

Assault! Meph wrecks his dread, my AM combat continues with us both whiffing. Yep.... Hes down to 2 tacs from 1 squad and I can't seem to kill em! My DC go down and lysander moves to assault my baal.

Kill Points: BA 6 - SM 5

ENd of turn thoughts: UGH! This games goin downhill :/ can't seem to wreck a vehicle to save my life! We'll see how his turn goes; this may just decide it!

Relictors Turn 5
His last razorback comes in, the squad comes in from the board edge to reinforce his other 2 squads locked with my now 3 man AM squad... His terminators move on top of the hill on my top right. His razors shuffle. His pred stays still. Lysander goes to demolish my baal which didn't move (my bad :/)

Shooting! He kills about 4 marines from my large AM squad in the middle through lots of shots from his termis, pred, etc. He shoots his raiders lascannons at my raven but fails to damage it.

Assault! His new 5 man tacs charge into my 3 man squad, but the PF sergeant dies in dangerous terrain! I manage to kill his 2 man squad finally, and make all my saves Then, one of the 5 man squads fails its stubborn morale and falls off the board! turn of luck woooo! Lysander then smashes into my Baal, immobilizing it and rolling a lot of 1's.

Kill Points: BA 8 - SM 5

At this point we THOUGHT it was the bottom of 4... so we went on. Damn losing track of time :/

Blood Angels Turn 6
I move everything on my left side to take out his 2 razors there. My raven turbos right next to his new HB razor. My squad in the middle moves out and around his predator, ready to shoot it up!

Shooting! My raven stuns his newly arrived razorback. My AM's blow up his predator.

Assault! Meph blows up his razorback, my 9 man AM's on my left blow up theirs as well. Lysander wrecks my baal pred.



Kill Points: BA 11 - SM 6

End of Turn Thoughts: I should have this in the bag at this point! just gotta kill more tanks

So, from here the games quick. Heres a rundown of what happens:
- T6 hanks termis rape my assault squad, but fail to get the priest. He also wrecks my other raven.
- My T7 my dread wrecks his last razorback.
- Hanks T7 his termis kill my other combat squad finally.

Final tally: BA 12 - SM 9

VICTORY FOR THE BLOOD ANGELS!!!

Afterthoughts: WOW! Damn close battle! Bad dice and bad tactics on my part were damn near my ending. . . I really should have spread out more on his side and forced him to come in BETWEEN my ravens, giving me a much better field of attack.

this is how I'd rate all my units for this battle:
Mephiston - B - He didn't get into the fight really this game,but he did claim 2 kill points
Furioso Dreads - A - They took out a couple vehicles. . . sucks lysander clobbered one so quickly
Death Co - C - They ran toward terminators and. . . died. Lysander made me his bitch :(
Baal Preds - D - They stunned 1 friggin vehicle all game and contributed toward killing some scouts. . . FAILURE
Assault Marines - A - Did their job
Speeders - B - Killed a raider and died, but hey! They contributed
Priests - A+ - Yep
Stormravens - B- - They delivered stuff where they were needed, however, I failed a lot of cover this game (made 1 cover save between the 4-5 pens)

Zid, you should ruin that list. I just ran some numbers, and assuming you get both SRs in on the same turn (via getting first turn, or getting them both out of reserves on the same turn), and assuming he can shoot every S6+ weapon in the army at them, and assuming he can't assault the SRs (yes, a lot of assumptions), you have a roughly 62.5% chance of having at least one mobile Stormraven after a turn of shooting.

I will predict that if this is the case, you win, as you can have two nasty things assault pretty much whatever you want.

To be honest, the Relictors list looks pretty weak. It would be better if he dumped the Storm Bolters and Power Fists in the Tac Squads to upgrade the Razorbacks' weapons.

A shame you aren't taking Plasma Cannons on the SRs! I think they're the best weapon, to be honest.

Reason for the AC's is for the occassional DE player (4 str 6 shots makes short work of raiders typically), and MC's.

I also added another razorback to his list, he told me he didn't type it in and missed it.

I reckon the key to this battle for me will be to take down the raiders quickly and silence as many lascannons as I can on T1 and 2. He has the ability to shoot at 8 different targets with mostly twin linked lascannons.... thats a lot of pewpew!

So it's a 'Ard Boyz list against a "experimental" marine list. My money is on the 'ard boyz one.

That's the problem I have against a stormraven army. Just 2 AV12 transports to hold the bulk of your army. At the 'Ard Boyz level, there's just so much ranged AT and spamming that I don't see stormravens as having much of a chance. Go up against long fang-spam space wolves, dread-spam grey knights, a tyranid army with 9 hive guards or DE lance-spam and I see those ravens going down pretty quickly. Your opponent didn't bring a particularly shooty army and even so, he was still able to deal with your 2 ravens. Just keep that in mind for the 'Ard Boyz about how you're going to deal with the shooty MSU-type armies.

Would it matter if the SR's go down? As long as they can deliver a killer HtH payload into the enemy lines I think they serve their purpose. If you start with them on the board and go second, yes that is bad, but even reserving them they will get halfway across the board before the enemy can do anything about it. That might be close enough to deliver Mephiston into the enemy gunline and even if the SR blows up you still have a Furioso and maybe Termies sitting at the 26" line, 22" from the enemy board edge.

I've been playing with 1 SR to deliver Mephiston and a furioso while assault termies ride in a LR. All the SR does is move flatout to get those two assault elements as close as possible to the main enemy group. The SR has had so much success I've been very impressed. I think Zid might be on to something here.

See this we werent sure about; I know you cant turbo, but we weren't sure about flat out after embarking/disembarking. Luckily it really didn't effect the game much

This is precisely why I love the ravens. People underestimate how powerful getting terminators or whatever 36" up the board on T1 going first is. Even if they all out reserve, you can get to their board edge and wait. Most (if not all) their firepower will be focused on taking down 2 vehicles which leaves my other stuff untouched.

I'll be getting more games in (hopefully) on my trip to NC in a few weeks. The metagame in this area isn't 100% WAAC, we have a few mechguard and 1 T-wolf spam player, but otherwise, a lot of crazy lists. This list can deal with Kan wall pretty well, so thats a good sign!

Pods have a few weaknesses. First half of them arrive on turn 1 and if you go first in Dawen of War or if your opponent reserves his army, then their arrival can be easily countered. Next even if you get the pod you want in the right spot, all those assault units can do is sit and stare for a turn since they can't assault out of the pod. The enemy can manuever and react to your arrival and in some cases 'deal' with them. A Raven will deliver the assault units who can assault right away. In the case of Mephiston that would be a 12" move, 2" disembark, d6" fleet and 6" assault for a potential 26" threat range. That means something within 26" away can be assaulted on your turn. Pods can't deliver that kind of threat.

Finally, once the assault element has been delivered the pod is of minimal threat to the enemy while the Raven is still packing lots of firepower. There's a huge difference in points between the two and I think the benifits of a SR are well worth the 170pt investment. I will agree with Zid in that you need the right units in them and you need to maintain a hyper-aggressive strategy with the Ravens to have success. They aren't glorified Typhoons that sit back and shoot.

I'll threadjack to give out another army list at 1850pts that uses the Raven, but plays a little more cautiously than Zids double Raven attack.

HQ - Mephiston (I've come to believe he's mandatory in a Raven attack)

EL - Furioso (another Raven staple)
EL - 5 assault terminators in LR

TR - 5 am in lazorback
TR - 5 am in lazorback
TR - 10 marines, missile, fist, rhino, hk

FA - Typhoon

HV - Predator with side lascannons
HV - Raven


Mephiston and the Furioso go in the Raven and I play it as aggrssively as Zid. They always move 24" into the enemy deployment zone and become a big threat. The LR usually follows up and the other vehicles form a mobile anti-armor firebase in my deployment zone. This creates 3 levels of threats to the enemy at close, medium and long range. I can engage the enemies weakest counter to any of my 3 stages (short, medium, or long range anti-tank) and let that stage do the most damage for me.
In games where the Raven has been lost it has already done it's job by delivering Mephiston and a Furioso into the enemy lines. The assault terminators and LR are hard on their heels for a second round of assaults. My opponent has to deal with all of this while the 4 tanks, a typhoon and 3 scoring units sit back to win the mission. It has been quite effective so far. Zids reports have got me itching for a 2nd Raven and to try out his style for some games.
