not necessary a problem... you coould ahve it facing down and going further from there like you did...

i would do this... but first i would copy you...and second... i love that planet to pieces... (and yeah it is a spacestation...no moon or planet )

Not sure of actual imensions of the Death Star, but I wonder if we should have the " Pluto" debate about if its a planet or dwarf planet

I wonder how many space lien races have passed up our solar system since we sent out that golden disc letting them know where we are. I mean really we told them were in a solar system with 9 planets now we have 8 and a couple dwarf planets? We could have had the cure for cancer, space travel, trips to Risa, but no. Now we get nothing because some has to go and get a wild burr up his butt and change the course of history.

On a serious note he wife leaves this morning for a week of cheer camp. That leaves me alone with 2 of our kids, as the oldest will be at grandma and grandpas through Thursday. Whenever she's gone I don't sleep. I toss and urn relentlessly so feel sorry for my kids as i can get grumpy.

i too feel always not complete when one of my kin is not with me...i am at my best when everybody is snug at home with me... i don´t have to party with them or play or watch something in the telly all day... just everybody does their thing and i am on my top level...if someone is missing... i am not whole...

and yep... how come someone has the right to declare that pluto is no planet anymore... we had shortcuts to remember the planets names and positions ...now all obsolete... *shakes fists*
but i think those aliens wouldn´t really be bothered what some (they call themselves) astronoms call a galactic mass...i think if they would like to talk to us... then we would be either talking or battleing already... which shows... nobody is interested in us

Well, to be fair, astronomy as we understand it fundamentally changed within the last 10 years or so. Now we know that planets don't necessarily need a star or even a system. The Hubble and other fancy gadgets have proven this and a bunch of other stuff. Basically every science book needs re-written now.

Is this the point of the conversation where I chip in with science and spoil the fun?

The thing with Pluto the dwarf planet is that there are many other objects in the solar system that are of a comparable size to Pluto and so we either have 8 planets and some other dwarf planets etc... Or we have 15, 20, 50...100+ planets as to include Pluto, we'd have to include all the other Kuiper belt objects of a similar size. So that shortcut to remember all the planets names would get awfully complicated...

And Voyager I is only on the edge of the solar system (the edge of the sun's influence) and so is only a fraction of the way to the nearest star. So it would require the Aliens to bump into Voyager to find it sooner rather than later and if they're near enough to find Voyager then they should be near enough to notice the solar system without needing the "map".

That said it would be quite amusing for a UFO to descend into the capital of whatever India and China become after they've taken over the world (possibly), Hold up the gold disk and say "this has led us here, to your little blue/green planet. We like it and will take it from you puny humans...".

Here I was trying to figure out a two ball combination, just couldn't pull it off.

Just got back from watching iron man 3 at the theatre with the kids. Wife left this morning and won't be back till Friday. It was good, but not as good as the first two, and the scene with Bruce banner at the end just didn't get me as excited as the other cameos. All the suits were neat, but could have done without the kid in the movie.

Far be it for me to break us away from boobs and nipples , especially with the wife out of town, but I saw some bits on the desk and had an idea. Wip as I'm leaving to take oldest to grandmas and all three of them to their yearly physical at the dr.

Any guesses at this early of a stage?

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/07/22 20:02:07

Post by: Viktor von Domm

i felt that iron man 3 was a rather poorer follow up to the last two... specially the surprise about the mandarin... it was rather a disappointment...

and since the operation clean slate my nerd heart was suitably brusied... all that cool gizmos....argh...

@dr. Hinternet still makes me laugh, sorry, but no again.
@vik, correct sir you win, it will become a conveyor belt .
@dave, you too are correct, but the German beat you to it. And you will make an excellent judge in the competition brownie points.

Should get some modeling time in tonight after the twins are asleep. Grammy is picking up the twins tomorrow to take them to the zoo, I will have a totally free day what to do?

As long as somewhere along the conveyor line is a meaningless giant stamper, i'm cool with it

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/07/23 08:09:10

Post by: Viktor von Domm

^that!!!

but why a conveyor belt anyway??? what is the bigger picture here? we are missing a thing or two here....

a full day? maybe finish something? I would wear a tinfoil hat against the inspirational rays coming from outer space tho... to avoid sidetracking

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/07/23 16:05:45

Post by: Theophony

Must still come up with giant stamper idea, but progress.

Control panel had been made a while back, but has now been repurposed for the belt.

Other side showing rivets and removable top for painting later.

No real point to this terrain piece, just saw the parts and had never seen anyone build one before. Figure it might be good cover in a building that was a warehouse.

Well I don't get a full day but six hours of free time is nice

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/07/23 20:29:44

Post by: Viktor von Domm

uiiii... i really like that... the belt looks very cool and even high tech... i was expecting the real mccoy rather a real belt... but i like this even more... way more! and the control panel looks business... where is that bit from?
and i agree... very cool cover idea.... in fact more of such devices are needed... i think you should think about sending this to galorn... so he can cast it... you never know... some extra cash for you might be possible?

oh... one thing tho... how about a control stick or a big lever?

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/07/23 21:01:11

Post by: Theophony

The business part as you call it along with the end pieces all came from a GW drop pod. So to resell it would cause issues. Though whole making this I was thinking of how to make more custom versions, which might be mold able.

You want more gadgets on it?
Okay

Also another part from the drop pod. This gives a grabber arm to sort incoming packages, and possibly to shove them onto an adjacent belt.

that is awesome man...looking really good.

all it needs now is a danger sign so you dont get your hand stuck in it or something like that to give it that much more character.

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/07/23 21:07:22

Post by: Viktor von Domm

^that... and an emergency button...you gotta have them... it´s the law...

and that looks simply stunning now....

and i dare say... show this to galorn and then try to figure out a way to copy the needed parts and do them on your own... really this piece has a future in some shops!!!

@selvaggiosaky, a tape gun wielding servitor??? Genius!
@dr. H, thanks
@bama, thanks, it will add to my table at least , saw your good news in Viks thread congrats.
@vik, thanks for he encouragement , I am currently thinking of version 2.0, and how to make elevated lifts and turns. Also how to get rid of GW parts in the process to make casting legit. Here's the start of version 2.0

Didn't feel like working on the conveyor belt anymore tonight, but got another wild hair. This was quick, and though theirs not much to it, it will be nice scatter terrain for the factory floor.

Hopefully it looks good enough for government work.

The end pieces are generic shapes, and thus not copyrightable (especially if part of a VERY distinct design different from their origin.)

Very cool.

Very cool! Now the Servo-skulls can build their own army!

I love the little machine along the line, the little sensor station is very realistic!

Post by: Theophony

Thanks Dave and galorn, it's one of my many zany quick builds inspired by an oddball piece. I would just like to point out no servo skulls were injured in the building of this.....yet , though many ideas come to mind from the build. How flawed would an imperial postal service be???

Mark two didn't look good to me this morning, so....

Mark 3.0, it's skinnier, and a smooth belt instead of the tire tread looking one. Might be easier to cast if that would ever happen. Now to figure out the leg situation and to make risers and a similar control panel, just so I can say its 100% me. Probably make a few devices to fit over the belt at different spots on the line as well. All manned by servo skulls of course.

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/07/24 21:00:36

Post by: Viktor von Domm

that drill/stamp machine looks really good... you seem to have hitherto unknown talent for these things... you should do more like this!

the new conveyor belts need more work on them to actually comment on...

only one thing i can add here... you totally convinced me with the tire tread (?) look... the smooth now looks a bit bland compared to the fist one...

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/07/24 21:19:48

Post by: Theophony

I like the tire tread one as well vik, I think galorn believes its okay to duplicate them, I haven't had time to text him about it yet, so we'll see.

Also since I need a little humor in my life, I've decided to begin a not so regular servo skull comedy build. Kind of like a one panel cartoon you see in the Sunday paper. I must warn you.....characters in the build may or may not be based on people real or imaginary

Servo skull 1: "hey Theo I got you something, it's in the bottom of the box"
Servo skull 2: "thanks Dave!"....i don't see anything"
Servo skull 3: "it's really far down in there theo, keep looking"....."hee hee"
Servo skull 2: "vik is that you? Hey it's getting dark in here!"
Sound of tape dispenser in action.
Servo skull 4: "guys, what's the zip code for Armageddon?"
Servo skull 2: "I can't believe your in on this too Dr. H."

Later.....
Servo skull 2: "guys?.....is anybody out there?"

I'm glad this is going over well. I hope Dr. H doesn't feel like an old decrepit man who couldn't putter around anymore on his own suspensors unit. he has tracks since he is the workhorse, and needs the treads to carry his piles of sprue that he's carving into wood for the imperium carpenters union.

I recycle everyone else's ideas, so feel free to recycle mine. As for joining work and fun time, it never hurts to make a model of the boss and make sure your gang beats him up occasionally. Just make sure not to post battle reports with his name, or if you have a work party at your place, make sure that model is tucked away.

@comradepanda, I am the anti-khorne. Where he collects skulls in piles to sit on I prefer to give them motive capabilities and bad choices.
@everyone else, glad I could make you all chuckle a bit. With all the great skill around here I know I take things too seriously too often. The servo skulls will remain here to encourage us to not take 40k too seriously, and Grin-Dork it up.

Currently at a fun center called myseum with my kids, they are having lots of fun. Giant Lego blocks have me entertain. I have built a house out of Lego that I fit into.

Watching all sorts of cool interactive, scientific play going on while they wear themselves out.

@galorn, if I was anywhere close to a artist I would turn it into a web comic, I have so many ideas that I could draw if I could even do stick figures, but how do you draw a stick figure servo skull?
@LDD, sorry dude I just chose you guys at random. Until I get my actual servo skull 1:1 army working I can't keep tabs on you all and find out all the inner geek to exploit
@vik, converting these is almost as much fun. There will be plenty of terrain too that these inspire. In fact the next piece I have in mind is a terrain piece, but I don't have the right plastic card right now. Will try to make it to the store today to remedy that.

Speaking of terrain pieces I need to do some work on my competition entries. I will be priming the Johnny on the spot today. Just a few more odds and ends to complete with it. I really haven't done anything with the big gun emplacement since its last update, so need to get cracking there. Tempest chicken is staring at me right now. I primed it the other morning as soon as the speed attack competition started. It still needed some work on spots, but I couldn't come up with ideas for it.

"Spare time"

What do servo skulls do when they get bored and the techpriest is away???

Set up some of the holy bling that's supposed to be mounted onto marine vehicles, and take turns hurdling themselves down the production line at them after turning off their antigravity plates.

Servo skull 1: I got three!
Servo skull 2: I'll get he rest!
Servo skull 3: little help guys???

I wan to make a gantry whose wheels fit the track, which can also be used to set the "pins". The end area will get a trap door where supplies are lifted up to this deck or the gantry t move to the production lines.

Edit: supply drop

Larger scale train tresel for the board, will get love at another time. Picked up used $5.00, good enough for me.

Been a little frustrated, the local shop hasn't been keeping up on ordering evergreen, so I picked up one item I wanted, and seven I might use later.

Also, consider ordering your plastic online, or speak to the store owner about your addiction/fix/needs. I'm sure they'll keep what you need in stock, if you make regular purchases/order in advance!

Thanks Brian, I'd order online, and should for the stuff I use a lot, but when I get one of my often occurring wild hairs then I need a reliable close place to purchase.

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/07/26 19:29:45

Post by: Theophony

Thanks dr. H, the gantry is progressing quickly (in my time period anyway). It will move in the channel on the side of the bowling alley. It also raises and lowers on its legs where the two tubes join. The gantry will have flashing lights, and the two winches underneath it will slide back and forth, they just won't raise/lower, but you can see they can hold things.

What you should probably do is build you own little corner of Mars, then you could have servo skull factory's as far as the eye can see .

My cunning plan is to build a necromunda table that is a manufactorum. It will be like a third shift with no supervision. It answers the age old question of what happens when you closer the refrigerator door, only this is what happens when the supervisor throws the off switch. Too bad he doesn't know that the off switch malfunctioned years ago and a rogue servo skull was in charge of fixing it. Since then all the servo skulls have been "on" 24/7, and all essential updates have been skipped. This has caused many of the servo skulls to become self aware, and with awareness they have gone crazy after decades of repetitive work stress. From time to time the servo skulls loose track of time and don't get everything cleaned up in time, when the supervisor returns the next morning, he figures the only possibility is a break in. The police have sent servo skulls to investigate after these incidents, but they too have been corrupted by the others.

Quick run to the game shop, picked up the dust tactics Quonsen hut pack. There's 6 unpainted Quonsen huts in a box for $19.95. I of course can't use it for that so putting them up on their ends to use as oil tanks for necromunda. The windows will be gas vents, or connection points for ladders, or where pipes will attach.

The nice thing about the huts is that he doors open and close with a simple push.

Thanks Dave for pointing dust out to me. I'm not getting into the game, but the terrain is awesome

Crikey Theo, your innovention knows no bounds... And you still speed through so many builds - your 'to be painted' shelf must be groaning under the weight...

Love those huts, remind of the Anderson type air raid shelters, but what a great idea to make them into oil tanks. Are you going to do surrounding beams like you get on gas storage tanks?
Spoiler:

Probably wont get the surrounding structure, working on stairs now. As for unpainted.....that explains most everything I own.

Here's the top of the tower right now, more to come.

Here's the beginning of the stairs, if anyone knows a better way, please tell me.

That's just ingenious! I'd cut those doors and windows off and save them for a different project if you are going to cover them anyways.

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/07/27 02:53:52

Post by: Theophony

Well....little to late to save the windows and most of the doors

Used zbar to square out the window, then attached strip stock to the sides for a flat square. Next attaching web trussing out from the boxes.

Will work on steps and the platform tomorrow. I need to find a compas to make round cuts and drawings easier. There's some pretty large gap in the side because the Quonsen hut doesn't sit right, all six I have are slightly off kilter.

In typical Theophony fashion I woke up his morning really early, looked at the project, and hated it. It didn't go to the scrap bin but a more concerted search pulled up the compass I was looking for , and so off came the top layer and the web truss supports. I'll have to create some new supports, but at least to me I like this level look a lot better.

@ruglud, I have stairs in my underhive...we were wealthy and elegant until the hive quake happened and sealed us off from the rest of the hive. Over the years the people starved as they only had plastic trees and no algae farms. The only thing to survive to present day when the next major quake reopened the area were the servo skulls, who had all gone mad with the boredom. That's why you see lots o things not normally available in other hives, like a janitorial crew. And servo police.
@dr. H, yes, circular ones seem to fit the eye much better. Thanks.

@Dr. H, even servo skulls enjoy taking a load off their lift units from time to time , just for you I'll have to make a 007 servo skull. He'll be just as crazy as the rest since he's been shaken AND stirred one too many times.

Second dummy is complete, same as the first, no pics yet, not really needed as they are the same. Thinking of putting hem on a different assembly line than the package sorter. Still churning ideas.

I love them too, I started driving them when I was 8 years old at our family business, I've been the regional trainer for them with Home Depot, driving throughout the market to train the people to drive to the stores to train the people in the store who will train the employees. I've got so many stories about forklifts that are ridiculous, but the best time was popping a wheelie on one and bringing it down safe

Here is a little progress to the build.

I never had any problems, but one of my lumber dawgs busted every edge every time by ramming the stack to make sure the load was against the backrest. Not sure how he's still employed, he destroyed a 4' wide steel rack by backing into it. His excuse was he didn't know it was there. The rack had been there since the store opened 7 years before, and he had run into it multiple times before. Now some of you might think.."well he's on a forklift and its only 4' tall" two problems with that. 1 kids and some employees are only 4' tall, and you have to look out for those. 2 when I say 4' rack I'm talking wide, it's 16' tall and 4' deep as well. He also didn't bother to tell anyone about it and somehow the managers walked by it for three days before I showed it to them and asked if they had seen it.

@dave, nope, one of our rules was to keep the floor spotless, kept the damages down, made the place look good, and saved us big time versus trip an fall claims.
@Dr. H, yep, I'm proud of the front, I even have it so the backrest can slide right or left, it is held in place right now with double sided tape.
Oh and there may be a centerfold from playskull magazine in a supervisors office. Look at those optical implants .

And a wall with a bell
Next to the bell will have to be a typical American style sign saying "____days since last workplace accident"

@Dr. H, everywhere I've worked they have had this sign posted on the same wall as all the legal stuff that must be posted. Like minimum wage, employee rights, and equal opportunity rights. So I'm pretty sure it's mandated somewhere.
@Vik, it was going to be a person operated forklift, but have multiple servo skulls playing around on it. Now it's going to be operated by Klaus. The arlam bell will have to be servo skulled also.

I don't know how to make a skull look annoyed, besides he probably enjoys ringing the bell at inappropriate times. Using the fire alarm signal or lunch period bell right after the start work bell.

I started a warehouse, not a street repair crew LDD. I still need racking for the pallets to go into, and more machines of a dubious nature. Plus I still need to focus on "when servo skulls attack".

@vik, I feel all warm and squishy now, mainly because of all the broken bones and blood draining out after the hug, but I'm sure that will pass.

It's weds. Grandparents day cleaning the basement out for them some more. 5 months in and I'm at the point of apathy. I don't want o go over because like last week poppy won't have a plan and what he wants to get done, so it will be a few hours wasted. He keeps changing his mind on what he wants to accomplish, hopefully this will be another week where he walks upstairs and tells me just to go at it. It's when I get more junk pitched tHan any other Time he's there. Sorry enough .

Got a few ideas in my head for a necromunda table with sewers, will have to run by the hardware store to get some ideas and see if the budget works out. It's for far in the future, as I don't want to get sidetracked from the postal servo skulls.

@Comrade, thanks, it was a fun build, and may serve a purpose in game.

not gonna get much done today, but a year old issue has been finally put to bed. long story short our old house sold today. like a lot of people we tried puttingit on the market a year ago when we moved closer to my wifes work and her grandparents. back then they weren't doing too good, and didn't expect either to be around now frankly. they have both gotten better, but still require a lot of extra attention, im making big brownie points while unemployed helping out. The oldhouse we owed more on it than what it was worth, due to the banks saying it was worth so much when we bought it 9 years ago. we got a buyer within the first 12 hours of it being on the market, but since it had two loans and valued less than current market it has taken 11+ months to get through all the red tape. The two banks fought it out, and we had gone to closing 4-5 times over the time period to sign the final papers only to find out one of the two had backed out, changed paperwork, or some other goofy thing. Finally relieved of this one major stressor in my life .

while waiting to sign papers I was reading other p&M blogs which got me thinking of an older T.V. show, which got me to rethink my security force. and it has been missing something. so i'll just leave this here for inspiration.

Another idea before working on the dawgs. You can never have enough barrels in necromunda. I've seen the scratch builds using paper, but into that patient. So I took some 7/16" tubing and cut them into 1/4" sections, three of them. I then popped four 1/2" circles from plastic card using my leather punches. I then stacked them to get the one on the left.

Tried a smaller size, I don't like that as much. What do you think. Also the top flat piece could be left off for a burning barrel to keep warm.

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/07/31 23:58:06

Post by: Dr H

Not a bad idea. The "rings" could do with rounding off to match the actual barrel ribbing. Either sanding them of putty them would work.
Also don't forget the little hole in the top, if you have a top.

Here's what I have, and it might get a few more touches done, but needed to at least have somewhat of an entry done for one of the competitions.

Mine can be used in any modern, or sci fi setting, was going to do a fantasy version, but hen two other competitions started. I think his would be an excellent backdrop for a zombie movie, or horror movie. Anybody see the second "the hills have eyes"?

Materials used in the project: CD, drinking straws, old gift and credit cards, dice cube container, sprue, paperclips, wire from toy purchase (wraps the toy to the cardboard backing), and a wheel off a broken toy truck.

I will give orange a try, thanks Vik.

@ruglud, I really enjoyed that show, but unable to bring him to life. He's been shelved for the here and now. As for your Turdis idea, it has risen to the top

Also worked on my next competition.

And it's secondary use as a chem. tower.

All the yellow will get hazard stripes and the top of the tower will be grey as well.

All is still wip.

It is adeptus standard grey. It will get a wash of Delian mud or black wash. Think I might paint the shutters bolt gun metal first though.

Update to the tempest chicken. I didn't like the hazard stripe feet, so black they went. Also started on the gun pods and second coats to base areas.

Looks good Theo. I would suggest that the claws get a lot of weathering, scratches and maybe a little blood...?

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/08/04 18:26:12

Post by: Theophony

@dr. H, the claws will get some scratching. Only the crAzy servo skulls use them to attack with, they are for carrying dreadnought and landing.
@Vik, I'm thinking of doing the missiles in red, or do you think they should be a different color. The sensor I the pod will have the orange lenses as well. The lenses still have a long way to go yet though.

Not much done yesterday, I was a little under the weather, still tired, but slept ten hours last night which is double my normal sleep. Church this morning and again later tonight for a special event. My daughter went to church camp this week with 200+ other kids and they are doing a get together for all the kids and parents tonight. The twins get to go next year, so we want them to see the slideshow presentation.

Also: codex space marines is coming out in sept, as reported in news and rumors. So I am considering redoing my companies in iron hands( servo skull) tradition.

Edit: quick work, used the containers my wife's razor blades come in to make a couple vents for necromunda.

Will prime them tonight

those containers look very cool!... but you added the mesh, right?

and why did you feel a bit low? weather related? yesterday i had a severe lack of energy too... even slept during noon...very unsual for me ... but at 98.6 °F...no wonder when you´re not used to that heat... thankfully it is getting better today... around 80.6° now... and the night is far colder... finally we can sleep sound...but then... school is starting tomorrow....:(

hmmm.... red and orange... difficult mix... but...if you choose red... then only the very tips of the rockets... no whole rockets in red... that would be too much...i think...

Just a stomach bug vik, nothing weather related. The weather here has been gorgeous ll week, even the rain was welcome and didn't leave humidity behind.

The new items are air vents vik, the grates are to keep out the riffraff, gangers and mutants. It will be scatter terrain and be spots where gang members can enter/leave the board during play.

Only the missile tips stick out, should. Just do them black? Or still do black with. Rudolf nose?

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/08/04 22:10:09

Post by: Dr H

If the surround of the missiles will be staying as it is (white) then I say red tips and if you can make it look like the rest of the missile is black then that's a bonus.
If that front plate (where the missiles stick out) is going to be black, then red tips and make the missiles look white bodied.

Either way, the red will add a splash of colour.

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/08/05 15:11:49

Post by: Theophony

@Dr. H, I think I will paint the flat center part black, then do the missiles white with the Rudolph nose

Well, no painting today yet, last night I got a strange urge to use the rest of the storm raven bits I still had from the two kits I've stolen parts from. But I didn't want to build another ugly bird, so what to make out of it, something came to mind. With the new codex coming out and grav stuff supposedly in the book how about a grav tank? Since the storm raven is supposed to be a flying land raider, why not bash one out of it. The fuselage stays the same except I will endeavor to stretch the back a little. If I just use this as a land raider the front door still works, and the side doors will still be necessary, but how will I mount the side guns? Well I chopped the wings a few times, found a new attachment point, and used the cut off for a whale tail. The profile is looking more like a landspeeder now, just one that needs a diet like me. Here's where I'm at.

So this would be the terminator version of the landspeeder storm. Able to swiftly move termis across the battlefield at low altitude while still providing cover fire and protection.

Inspiration pieces.
It can still sport the front mount weapons, Nd have a top mounted weapon system, and possibly a bottom weapon system under where I will extend it. This project is low priority, and will easily get set aside, just something that popped into my head and had to come out.

I always loved vicious spidery things. Ever since the old chaos codex came out long ago and this picture was in it.

I always wanted giant spider destroyers, and the defiler just was a major let down. I think this sort of thing would be a mechanicus dream. Lots of fiddly moving parts and it mimics a living creature. Almost done with the second one, they are a pain to assemble and to get right where the legs are balancing them, but I think I came up with a new way of doing it that could speed things along.

Now if these are attack bikes, how should I do regular bikes?
1. Same, but make the legs a little smaller, and remove heavy weapons
2. Same but put storm bolter on bottom and rider weapon on top
3. Something completely different (if you choose this then give me an idea)

Attack bikes are the trikes, are they not?
So you want something sleeker, thinner, more 2-wheeled bike... How about some kind of 4 legged, galloping thing. Similar aesthetic but a little less bulk?

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/08/06 14:47:35

Post by: Theophony

@ruglud, thanks, yes more legs go faster, so less legs would be slower....and he bikes have to keep up with the attack bikes.
@Vik and Dr. H, while I like the idea of less legs and keeping the platform similar, I find that I couldn't fit all four legs on a bike base. I would love to do a dog looking bike, hence the robot wars attempt, but I just couldn't wrap my head around it.

So I got thinking, how do I keep the body, and keep the mechanicus idea....
Well the ymbol of he mechanicus is a giant cog with a skull in the middle, so why don't I make a servo skull cog?

He's new so he gets a training wheel , I don't know if I could use his as episode 7 of when servo skulls attack, but I can just see the other servo skulls making fun of his newb who needs a training when on his monocycle because his processor can't keep balance yet.

The business side with the twin bolters for counts as bike.

The training wheel is not permanently attached, I will try and make a cog about the same size later, it's just a place holder so you get the idea.

What do you think???

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/08/07 11:59:55

Post by: Theophony

Wow....either I stupefied everyone with incredible awesomeness....or more likely your trying to save my feelings by not telling me how bad it is.

Well I worked on it some more, replaced the wheel with a second cog. I still need to fill the sprockets, or cap the end of them with pc.

Please let me know good, bad and dumb of what you think, it will help them to evolve.

I think the ends need some sort of tread or texture to sell the idea.

It seemed to be a quiet DDakka day yesterday, not as much traffic as usual for mid-week.

I did see your unveiling of the cog and left my mind to think about it (it works best when I don't interfere ) and see how your evolution came on.

No prime computations yet (if you get the reference ), but I think the teeth on the large cog are too big for the diameter of the "hub" OR they are too straight, sloping sides may make the length seem more natural...

The smaller one looks ok, but the big one looks more "paddle wheel" than cog.

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/08/07 14:24:19

Post by: Theophony

@minion Dave, I'm thinking of trying to do a stamp of the mechanicus symbol to put on the ends of each sprocket, failing that either rivets or the prongs used on the bulldozers at trash dumps. Some of the sides might also get some details like wires as well.
@Dr. H, yep it's been slow yesterday. We took our kids for a two hour drive to Springfield, Illinois to visit the Lincoln museum and library. Very good time, and a great day-cation. I checked in as often as I could on my iPhone (which I hate doing) before my wife gave me the talk . Unfortunately the sprockets had to be that long on this one to accommodate the training cog , maybe a little work around the sis will reduce that look.

Off to the grandparents house today. With the basement having been done as much as I can do, now it's time o work on the 3000sq. Ft unfinished attic of storage . The kids start school again next thursday, which frees me up even more

@nerdfest, they aren't giant saks chasing you, but still scary none the less.

Only worked at the grandparents for two hours. Still cleaned out about 4 90gallon trash cans full of stuff. And that was just to clear off the stairway TO the attic. Did find some nice stuff that he let me have instead of pitching or recycling. Got some old scrap pieces of gutter cover to use as fencing/grating, a few lawn tools that he had multiples of because he couldn't find the other ones which were deeper in the same piles, and then I found these...

Empty co2 cylinders from pellet guns. I think they may make some nice large propane tanks. They are almost 3/4" diameter so I can make some bracing for them relatively easy. Over all length is 3 1/4" with the valve end being roughly 3/8"

I'll see what they turn into

when those canisters are empty... are they totally secure? just checking... you never know...

as for the quiet day yesterday... we had some very hot and humid days the last ...er...days... and my sysetm went all the way downhill...so i followed it and went to bet at 10... if i do so i always feel even more old than i actually am

now back to topics...

the doomwheels look rather good...the very idea to use these bitz of the hatches in that way is again a living testament to your genius!... the servo skull i would put in always in an upright position... i imagine a clever inner device to keep it in a static position even if the whole thingy is spinning like crazy...
the weaponry you added looked fine too...i agree with dave that the ends of the cogteeth needs additional texture... maybe just embossed card?

also on a related subject... for your next build of these i would suggest making a perfect hexagon first... or rather three to get the right thickness of your desire... and then you can have the cogteeth in perfect position.,., as of now the eye is drawn to the odd placed teeth... i had that happen to me too with my captian victory´s shield... and it dorve me crazy...no end...

also... on the above story of your gandparents... sorry if i am stepping on your tes for asking... but what you here describe sounds rather like a case of being a messy... dunno if that term fits in an english surrounding... but that looks like a bad habit turned out even worse...are the grandparents all right? sorry if my tone might sound out of place...it wasn´t to be inteded to be disrespectful...

Vik, the canisters are totally secure once empty, I think they might have just been compressed air and no co2. Basically just a metal shell.

The grandparents are mentally alright, just have had bad health issues with plenty of hoarding to go with it. Nanny had cancer when I met my wife and was told she had weeks to live. Thirteen years later she's totally clear of any signs of hat but has had both knees, a hip or two, and back surgery along with other procedures which keep her from going up or own steps. Poppy has had multiple back surgeries, neck surgery that almost put him in a wheelchair, arm and shoulder surgeries and an infection that almost killed him. He is struggling to walk now since the last surgery, but getting his legs back. He keeps everything because he wants to build and make things as he is An engineer who designed and built mining equipment and vehicles similar to catapillar tractors. I unfortunately see lot of me in him, my hobby area would look like his house if I were to not clear it out often. Their housekeeper, is a friend hat has worked one day a week for then for the last thirty years. She lends more Imelda sitting and talking with nanny than leaning, but still gets paid, but I guess when your 60+, it's not likely to be down on your hands nod knees cleaning for others.

On the minion bomb, I must tell you that your grot bomb was. Huge factor in its creation. It will get rivets of course, but I think it is obvious it must be a bad moons clan, and yellow, with lucky blue pants.

I will have mother look at the sprocket placements, I used the notches on the hatches as guides.

my own grandpa was in a same way... mutiple surgery ... heart failure and then some tumor under his brain that took away almost all of his sight... he once was the peak of manliness in my youth... seeing that old man crumbling before us was gutwrenching...

so with the above explaination... i see what would leave to the current status quo with their home...

and as to the minion... i looked at it more as a walker than a bomb... like a weird dread

Big boy becomes "Dave's Dogs" may have to be "G____'s Gerkins" as it has the G from gru labs on the front of his apron though.

Also his twin brother didn't fair so well, and just became my original idea of a propane tank.

His third brother may become a servo skull submarine, "the hunt for red skulltober"

@dave, the round bit at top is the back of the servo searchlight from the fortress of redemption, I think it looks the part. The only thing is these are proportionally smaller than the ones you see behind homes and businesses.

I was having far too much fun with this today....so here's episode 8 "do you want fries with that"

Customer: I'll have a large nuka cola no ice, that's all.
Servitor: €¥!££€~{}{# were out of ketchup !€+£#>|<%,?>*!
Customer: I don't want ketchup, I just want a large nuka cola no ice.
Servitor: <~*}#|€!€£!>?£ emperor combo meal....girl toy >|\~?>£!€+!
Customer: All I want is a large nuka cola!!!
Servitor: ^*¥+%{<>£!>£ emperor combo...girl toy, nothing to drink £}%|{.<€!£€¥£
Customer: Are you kidding me? I don't want a emperor combo! I just want a nuka cola NO ice!
Servitor: the Inquisition has been alerted to your heresy. Please remain where you are while they are in route.
Customer: runs off
Servitor to supervisor: mechandrite bump.

The statue now has his toes

So I now must have a name for my 40k food franchise. I'm thinking they will be yellow hot dogs so I can paint him up like a minion, but it should have a nice ring to them and start with a "G" as I have it on the belly of the minion.

I think the 50's hold good times for us here in the states Vik. Post WWII, the baby boom, and Americans becoming so capitalistic. All the troops that came home began to settle down, buy homes, t.v., cars all the new and innovative stuff that came out then. Our economy was cranking and we had money to spend. We look back at hose times with fondness. Germany had the iron curtain around them, fear of he Russians and still getting over the war and finding out everything that Hitler and the bosses had done. I can see why it's not a good feeling time period for you guys.

Along those lines on our long drive yesterday we passed an antique mall (didn't go inside), but outside was a Giant Paul Bunyan statue, a big boy, a huge "UFO" playground building with windows on all sides and up on stilts, old cars and next to it was an ice cream store that was in the shape of a ice cream cone.

Well I went on a supply run, looking for ghost buster toys for Dave. Didn't find any. But hit my flags and picked up a package of instant mold, I'll have to try it out tomorrow if I get a chance. Also thought I should show off the other item I got at the grandparents.

I got quite a bit of the black plastic, which is gutter guard from twenty years ago or so. You can also see the instant mold I got.

Careful observers may also notice another scatter piece I built earlier. It will be the dumpster for the fast food franchise "name still to be determined"

Closer pic
Also I cut a length of the gutter guard stuff be because I had an idea, and wrapped it around a pen.

Once taken off it looks like good razor wire to me, what do you think?

There's actual stranding in the plastic mold that upon close look makes it really neat.

no burgers, protein sticks.
And where do you put the protein stick wrappers if your a busy ganger on the run from the adeptus arbites? Well you could just toss it on the grouns, but that would be littering and extend your time as a future servo skull. Just stop by one of the many trash cans/heater units along the street. But be careful if thowing your wrapper into an already lit up can as the grease from the protein stick has been known to be used as a replacement for promethium when guard units are in serious need.

Nice bins. You know you're going to have to make a lot of rubbish to be put in that wire bin...

that bin looks very good... i have one of these under my desk for the stuff i have absolutly no use anymore...it does happen^^

the wire looks nice...tho the thorns are a bit big for my taste... tho...if you use it on a big wall as an extra cruel means of defense... this might work...

and the dumpster again shows your genius...

the mesh as such has a very nice shape... i bet there is plenty of good use... i see basketball playgorund fences or such things with this...

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/08/08 12:29:07

Post by: Theophony

@dr. H, if there's anything I specialize in its rubbish
@vik, I got the mesh a while back to make fencing from, looks like Dave may have used it on his landspeeder, the only problem I have is it doesn't glue very well. The black guard stuff is a little oversized for razor wire, but I believe that it can still look the part of hazardous ground. Also the mesh is just so nice looking , it looks circular, but is actually more hexagonal up close. It might make a nicer barrier wall.

I didn't like the trash dumpster as much this morning as yesterday, but saw what was bothering me about it.

I replaced the gw part with scratch built, now I'm more happy.

Off to take my boy to basketball practice and to Walmart, I'll see if I find anything interesting, I'll have my daughters with me, so no serious scavenging possible.

yes... even better looking...will you add some rivets?

oh...and maybe you could sprinkly PVA and static grass on the wire... that could make some mean looking thornbushes or something^^

I have some rivets on order, unfortunately they are coming on a slow boat from china literally. They are the same microbeads used by machinator, hopefully I can do half as good of a job as he does with his rivets on his tanks. I'm sure I could have gotten them locally, but I must help support our new overlords like a good toadie.

Edit: just saw this video, now I want to be a zombie hunter

no idea whatsoever, I found it over in the news and rumors space marine codex thread. it reminded me of so many D&D games as a kid when a new Dungeon master started in the group and enforced encumberance. We had what could only be called a sniper elf who carried 200+ arrows so he couldn't run out. After this Dungeon mater got done with the character he had to hire henchmen just to tote the arrows for him . This is how I would have to dress in a zombie game, just to make sure I don't run out of ammo. Of course once you got all that ammo on, you'd have to use the bathroom, I guess that's what the tactical toilet paper roll is for.

Oddly enough on my run out yesterday I stopped at an army surplus store and was looking at the molley rigs and 50cal ammo boxes.

best thing was the perfect hair shot tho of shade...

and a former good friend of mine was a game master in our game... we had that player... he had gear out of this world... magically augmented to no end... and dual swords, bow, crossbow, shield, double handed sword and an axe... maybe i forgott something... well the player was forced to swim in a lake... fully kitted.... it took like 5 times a roll of dices to make him understand that he either drowns or has to leave the gear in the lake... he survived... poor fella^^

Thanks ruglud, but that will have to be imagined

Wen to breakfast with the family then stopped by hobby lobby. They are clear ancient out a lot of model kits along with good supplies, so...supply drop.

The sheets are two packs of g scale diamond plate and two packs of brickwork. Each has two pieces in them for $4.19 (40% off) the sheets are 7.5" x 12" each.

Wait are those googlie eyes? Why yes, yes they are. Unfortunately they were just too big for what I wanted. You see I wanted them to fi inside the goggles, not on top. Well I'll have to make do.

Forgot to bring Dave in last night before bedtime, I guess the metal cooled differently than the plastic and his goggle strap popped off. He's been reglued since the pic.

It's an off brand, jtt I believe. really thin, forgot to look at the gauge, but light shines through rather easy. Or the price I couldn't pass them up. I might make another trip later as hey has some other textures as well, including a moonscape with craters. Didn't want to go crazy with the kids around.

I've been putzing around all last night and his morning with not a lot to show for it. So back to necromunda build. Since I was listening to deep space nine in the background it got me thinking of Jeffries tubes and conduits, and some pieces from that grav tank I was fiddling with just happened to catch my eye. So chop, chop, glue glue oh what a relief it is.

Blank wall section that's same size as a bulkhead......I've got plans for it.

The hatch, pipe and light are just resting on there or are poster tacked for now.

Hatch open. Next time I might make he hinge actually work, right now it's poster tacked.

Obviously still needs work, but until I can mass produce the blank walls, nothing will get permanently affixed. The lamp light is from the bike fairings off the old ravenwing set. I have lots of them from my bit selling days and they are cheap on eBay.

Thinking of making 1'sq. terrain boards for each restaurant including drive thru areas. They can be set up next to each other with barricades between them, or on different sections of the board just for giggles. Or do you think it should be set up like a food court in the mall?

And another idea just popped up because of that. Thanks dave

Seems everything with the inquisition got straightened out at the grub hub. The citizen realized he DOES want an emperors combo WITH ice.

Just so you know, so you don't get lobotomized for taking he emperors name in vane, the combo includes a Big E protein stick and a nuka cola. Make sure you place your Big E wrapper in the proper receptacle or else .

Here's some of the modular parts for the grub hub/ trash hut/ brick house. Funny they all smell the same. Includes fourth wall, half wall/ counter, and operating door taken from the dust tactics Quonset hut.

Unhappy customer waiting behind the grub hub to get payback against the servo skulls that caused him to get searched by the probing mechandrites of the inquisition.

Up next.....servo skulls with stupid fast food franchise hats

man... you are exceeding building limits no end theo!!!!... i hear the whistle blows of the cops! run for it!...

that brickwork and the things you do with it makes me envious... but i have my own little ways around this...you´ll see... one future day

the burger wars idea and the board for that i think is a really nice idea!... comic relief and a highly unique play theme... for once i think you need to focus on something...

lil big dave looks awesome and highly funny with htose google eyes...and when you described his google strap poped due to termic issues...i coldn´t repress a laugh!... i bet you had to be there... must have been like in the movies

the new bulkhead idea looks promising...but lacks some more detail... and honestly... if you think about a working hatch and angle... do it... there is no better way around it than in actually doing it...i hint that towards my wife when she is making new clothes for her every time... if something is not like you wanted it in the first place... redo!...until you are fully satisfied...the nagging feeling you shoulda/coulda have done it better when you only do it soso... it ruins the fun and fame you get when doing a job for yourself you know coud have been different...

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/08/09 22:07:50

Post by: Theophony

in no way was the thermic issue to infer that Dave might be a hot head. He always seems level headed when posting around here.

I have an idea for the hatch to make it functional. But too many other ideas were happening at the time. I really need to write my stuff down in a notebook for later reference, so I can come back to it. I've tried that idea before, but then it just doesn't seem cool enough later.
, so I scrap them.

Even servo skulls get time off for Maintenance and recharging so what happens to the grub hub then? Well we can't leave humans in charge, they'd just eat everything. Pull down the gate and lock up.

And where does the gate go when open for business?

I am limited by fat fingers, and materials available. So the gate doesn't roll up.

I think I found a new avatar while building the grub hub.

@Dr. H, yes, that's the corrugated cardboard I had talked about way back when . I got it from an art store here. Got a 2'x4' piece for around a dollar. Forgot about it till I looked for something else yesterday and saw it.

Not a heck of a lot today. Thinking what I could do with my kids, why not take them to the park to play? Well my kids were still sleeping, so why not bring the park to them in 28mm scale.

I've got to get some PVC pipe at h hardware store to make a slide. Also need to knock out a monkey bar set, and a fire mans pole, possibly a tetherball post, basketball court anything else I should make? A sandbox will be easy (and just gave me an idea, very necromundy).

@dsteingass, thanks dave , I had to find a use for those cocktail drink things as the evil petting zoo idea never took hold.

Had to flesh out the idea I had with my previous post. Unfortunately I don't know where my jar of sand is, guess I'll take the kids to a real park today and grab a handful. So you guys will have to see the sandbox without sand in it.

The chopped up body I an old space wolf scout. I'll cover it mostly with sand, add some blood red, and we have a necromunda body dump

Also in the picture do you guys think I should use the bb or the marble as a ball left in the playground?

Also also in the pic we have one vote for batting cages, any seconds???

MINIGOLF!!!!!!!!!! Sorry that just popped into my head

This is what happens when you take the gang for a road trip outside the industrial area of the hive.

Post by: Dr H

Nice. Again, you have pulled out some ideas and made them reality. Park things are looking good.

I'd say the marble looks a little too large for the scale.
Batting cage sounds good and mini-golf will be epic (do it ). Also, thinking about the local rec/park here (where they got rid of the huge slide), how about a half-pipe thing for skateboards? But also build a slide, that will also be cool.

I don know much about skateboarding, but my neighbor when I was a kid in the eighties had a half pipe in his back yard. While I never broke a bone on it(though I felt like I had), I had some nasty bruises the few times I tried it. Guess I could start with bulkheads for the elevated parts, and make some curves for the others areas. I might have to do some research.

I always wanted. Build a mini gol course in my back yard, guess ill make one n the basement instead . Tiny windmill and castles here we come.

Going Down: Beyond the Gates of Antares  @ 2013/08/10 13:37:04

Yeah, I know very little about skateboarding. I don't think I even progressed to standing on a board in the few occasions I tried as a child. Rollerskates, yes. Skateboard, no. Although I was more of a bike user, could go faster on one of those.

Look forward to the mini-golf. At least we won't have to wait long at the pace you seem to be going recently...

Can I recommend the sand from those sand art things over playground sand? The scale is quite noticeable. Often the sand art sand is in funky colors, but if you look in the floral section of Michael's craft store, you can find bags of sand, cork chunks, and other useful terrain supplies on the cheap there. ..and in more realistic scale colors. It can of course be painted too.

@dave, I'll make a run there later this week, thanks for the suggestion.
@dr. H, might skip the ramp after second thought, or putting it on the back burner for now. But it will possibly come in on a later phase of the project.
@vik, well my forehead is getting larger, we all just thought it was because I was going bald . I'll have to think how to do the batting cages. Also found this over in news and rumors. http://ghosttraingames.com/others/ they are making a alternate American civil war skirmish game, looks steampunkery to me

I like my new avatar a lot, because I made it very cathartic.

Also talked the wife into taking the kids to do mini golf today , at a local amusement center that has batting cages as well. Research mission

Teeter totter now has handles, an made a few low walls that will be landscaping around the park.

@reeno, thanks for the compliment
@LDD, thought about making the backboards out of clear plastic and breaking one,but since my board is going to be snicker area of the hive, kind of like a pre fall of the imperium, thought maybe they had kept it in decent shape. Plus servo skulls would never leave broken stuff around. Might make one with rivets, welds, or broken bits. Being necromunda I guess I should at least drill bullet holes in one of them.

As for MINIGOLF, still thinking of ideas. Maybe a giant cog for one of the displays. A marine statue for another. An Imperial guard, or the lasgun with helmet fallen guardsman, dead xeno scum. Maybe creatures of the imperium. I have a few spiders, so maybe a necromunda sump spider. Open to other suggestions as well. One idea I had was to make a pre heresy play park with 18 holes, one for each primarch(of the 18/19 known), or go for 21 (each primarch gets his own, except alpha legion gets two on one) and the Big E gets the final one where if you score you get a prize

Not much done yesterday, had an okay time at MINIGOLF, my son had a meltdown so we only played 16 holes plus the win a "free ____" hole because it was hot and no shade around. My oldest hit the bullseye on the last hole and won a free Ted Drews custard, so we all went for ice cream after.

Also my brother and sister in law had their first child, a beautiful healthy girl. My wife and I have it planned to go visit them in October, they live in New York City, and we'll site see at that time and give them a night out.

Finished this part, yes part, this morning.

And scale shot

The grey pipes are from a kit I bought 20+ years ago, and I wish I had more of it. I've used bits everywhere, I'm not even sure what scale it is and no marks on the sprue to let me know the manufacturer. It's from model trains, all sorts of pipes and flanges . I'd love to be able to make the whole jungle gym out of it, but alas no. I'll stop by the model shop this week and see if they have anything similar, otherwise the gymset will be slightly different.

I'm pretty sure it's much smaller, I'll take a pic of the spruces later as I'm getting ready for church right now, the steps on the set are tiny.

Only had a bit of time, and the joints are small, so needed to rig up a way to hold the parts together till the glue dries. But here's the start of the next piece.

@ldd, when you find out who makes it let us know, I'm buying stock in that company as soon as you post it.
@kc, good to have you back , sorry ill try to work faster now that the kids go back to school Thursday.
@dave, m gonna laugh if its something you already have ample supply of and it's under some other name.

Back from church, grocery shopping and making the kids lunches, brother in law is coming over. Hopefully we can get a game of bloodbowl in.

I do have jewelers chain stashed away for the swings

Edit: which chai. Do you think? I'm leaning towards the smaller sized links.

Dave will try and get some this week mate send me your address though as I need to know where to send it.

Theo will be going on Saturday if they have it I will buy it and let you know for sure.

Now those swings looks pretty dam cool so far, as to the chain can you hang some over the frame so we can get a sense of scale.

Although I would go for the smaller links looking at them.
