I just realized that the old model and the new one look to be something real close to MK8 armor!

That, and GW actually seems to be showing show Skull Restraint as the only model, with all those teeny tiny skulls on the scabbard, may actually have more skulls than the new one!

What we can't see is all the skulls that were skull-pted inside the model.

I regret NOTHING in making that pun.

So the skull fetish is due to some minion mispelling sculpture in the Finestaff Brainwashing Machine?

Nah, it's clearly skulltaker. He's getting jealous that everyone is getting more skulls than him.
If Tau gets skulls on their minis, we can expect to see a 500% increase in prices and $50 digital exclusives that contain 3 pages of rules.

It's 21:40 in the UK where GW is based. I suspect that it will be during working hours in the UK that you'll see the site go live (assuming GW's internet staff are UK based). We might be lucky and the Oz site goes live first if regional sites are allowed to activate on their own.

It really depends - if htey want a single launch for all regions it will be during UK working hours; if they go with region by region its could be any time.

Trying hard to imagine how they will make it more corporate and dull, but aside from axing the specialist games free rules (thank god I downloaded them all in time), I can't think of much.

I'm sure they will surprise me though.

EDIT - Changes to the website (such as new products) usually go live at midnight UK time.

Seems an odd time to update the site, however new products is normally fairly straightforward - I'd think a new site might have more potential problems so running it during opening hours at least means there are some staff awake to deal with things

I still think the idea of FW being sold at a GW store or ordered with free delivery to a GW store is a pipe dream, a very large pipe dream.

Why would GW all of a sudden eat the shipping cost? Even if FW were to be carried in a GW stores, don't expect the full range, more like 'The 10 most popular items' kind of thing.

why would GW do it?

because they ALREADY DO IT... with their product.

the "two" companies really are not so, they are the same for all intensive purposes, just different departments.... seems like a no brainier that they can combine their shipping.

if gw can send gw boxes to the local gee dub store, then they can do it with FW.

I agree though, no one saw it coming, very out of character for them to give us anything for free, but maybe thats slooowly becoming less of a thing, as we have seen with the fast release rates, cheaper bundles and periodic new rules to the codexes in between the edition.

they can start having A FREAKING STORE COPY TOO, then I could actually figure out what I need to buy and give them moneys for...

sadly that last bit makes far too much sense for them to do.

That's been less and less true recently, with the weekly releases the pre orders have been going live about 19.00 on the Friday, and the WDD blog thing I think has had some effort (largely ineffective IMO) to make it more relevant, and seems to have been updated all over the shop.

The shipping container that was carrying their Internets fell off the freighter and sank. The factory is furiously making new Internets, but in the meantime certain regions will have a limited supply of GW Internets.

(That actually happened to the Falcon way back when, didn't it?)

I agree with the first part but not the second. He looks too much like he just crawled out of the skull pit on the Realm of Battle board for my tastes but I posted the counterpoint simply because some sort of bolter (not pistol) plus powerfist is one of (if not the most) common loadout characters get. You might as well be surprised if the next chaos or dark eldar model has spikey bits on him if a storm bolter/PF loadout on a marine is a shock. Not every special character needs to be mathhammered by the tourney crowd before getting sculpted and the two are perfectly viable (better at shooting and close combat than standard marines but not the best possible in either) and frankly look cool in general.

Almost all imported hobby stuff. Tends to cost about 25%-50% again as much as it should. GW stuff bucks that trend (in general) and goes for closer to double. Rarely and recently, some kits are closer to parity. It's down to gouging on distributors' and GW's part. Not taxes. (10%)

That said, I don't like the SB and the skull encrusted scabbard. But hey, that is the model. Own it.

Any one else slightly shocked at how badly this webstore change over has been handled?

... Like seriously, being down for an entire day is embarassing!

You get the new website and store fully functional and active on one server, BEFORE shutting down the old one. And then change where the domain is pointing at, job done with zero down time (well maybe mere seconds)

Theyve instead taken down their store, lost a days worth of sales, and said that patience will be rewarded......
Really ought to be sacking the people handling this changeover now and sueing them for a day of lost sales when there was no reason whatsoever to have any down time.

Lol... new products have totally nothing to do with a new webstore.
The web developers are genuinely taking the piss out of GW on this one. Will have been paid (probably very well) to make this site and get it going.
i.e GW is paying someone to cost them sales in the way mentioned in my last post.

Nope. TBH it would have been kind of shocking if GW hadn't hired the cheapest and least competent people they could find to handle their website. I'm sure their next financial report will brag about how much money they saved.

Do you? You apparently don't realize that is the stock loadout of all terminators, half of the veteran sergeant and captain models they've ever made roughly, and plenty good for several marine special characters.

Either I have been playing wrong, or that loadout is fine because you dont get an extra attack for having a pistol and a PF in 6th edition....

To be fair it may well be the former, but I have been sticking boltguns on all my Tac sgts instead of pistols because you dont get an extra PF attack unless you have x 2 PF right?

Two "Specialist Weapons". So a Lighting Claw and a Powerfist works fine.

I've heard the same rumors to include yes FW (eventually), yes FW (only in GW stores/maybe FLGS), no FW and "What's FW?" so I'm not getting two excited.

If there's a special bonus miniature, I will rejoice. Even if it's just a silly-looking space marine captain it's still potential free stuff, and something I can paint and place in my box of shiny, collectable things.

If there's any kinds of price discounts or expensive finecast kits going to plastic and being slightly less expensive, I will rejoice. Hell, if prices stay the same I'll rejoice.

If this is an excuse to raise prices and put models in new boxes where you get less models/box (not saying it's happening, just saying it's possible), I will be very unhappy.

We shall see what happens.

That site was amazing. I remember there being banner documents and such for the old print-and paste standards and just got my hands on one of the dwarf ones using that link. You can't get anything close to that off the current site. One 20 year old document has rendered more useful information than the entirety of their blog so far.

Or just the face-lift. I would be genuinely shocked if any real functionality was actually added. In fact, I will be genuinely shocked if a fairly large amount of legacy content (say, the Specialist Games resources) isn't lost in the Warp during the transition.

Assuming you did it properly you'd build the new site on same or new hardware, then switch the DNS entry (can take hours to replicate around the internet) or even better the load balancer over to the new site (live in seconds) if staying with the same data centre. Only small, one man band operations should be looking to do the migration during the downtime. Your switch over should be as painless as possible with only final shakedown testing needed, SIT, UAT, etc. should have already been performed against the actual production servers running the final build ofthe service that has already been tested on test/UAT, all ahead of go live itself.

That is how consumers affect a company's product strategy.

1. Buy or not buy the current products.
2. Talk about what you like or don't like about them, or would prefer.

The "flaming torches and pitchforks march on head office" approach went out in the early 90s.

If there seem to be more people complaining rather than buying, than a few years ago, that may reflect the situation on the ground. We shall see when the end of year financial report is published.

Then they need to fire their marketing team and hire some actual professionals.

Taking the site down with zero notice and zero indication of when it will be back up is more likely to build annoyance than anticipation. The 'What's New' piece for Tuesday ended with a "and tomorrow we'll talk about..." piece...

I get why GW withdrew from Facebook. Their fanbase - using the term loosely - is far too noisy, internet savvy and overly sensitive for it to be worth their time dealing with the fallout from every little thing. But taking down the entire site for 24+ hours without a word is just amateur stuff.

EDIT:

well there is LOTS changed here.... those baneblade kits, are now listed as individual vehicles rather than by kit name, some even appear twice in the same section...

i think this is not well planned but they couldnt leave it down anylonger for lost sales....

I guess they assume people will either email GW for answers or self-regulate.

The problem with the former is that GW is well-known for giving inconsistent responses to the same question.

The problem with the latter is that people are asshats.

I blame smart-phone users for this change. "Mobile-friendly" websites suck.

They also seem to have taken out all the content, it's just a big interactive catalogue made pretty for people on iPhones to poke around.

Did anyone notice?

The iBook version of the IG codex is 44,something €.
The printed version of the IG codex is 38 €.

They actually have the audacity to charge you 7€ more without offering something tangible. No delivery, not paper costs, not printing expenses, no nothing, and they want more money for the ebook. Are they in their right minds?!

Also, I assume the red up-pointing arrows inform you about price increases, otherwise I can't explain, why the Big Mek with the SAG gun costs 33€ now. That must be record for any single infantry model without even the bulky USR, even including forge-world.

Yeah the Wyvern/Hydra kit are listed separately but the description clearly shows it as a dual kit. Arguably easier for new gamers/unfamiliar parents.

Maybe GW is replacing all their server hardware?

I don't even know if they have more than one server honestly.

They'll have multiple servers but it's a long solved problem and there should be almost no downtime on any website switch over, especially if it's not even migrated user accounts or provided any kind of transition - all the old links just drop. Companies far smaller and far larger than GW do it all the time and you'd barely notice. Amazon, google and facebook probably add several new servers a day and you'd never have noticed. Hell Dakka moved to new servers last week and the downtime was minimal.

Essentially you get the new site set up on the new servers (or a new part of the old servers), make sure it works, and then just switch over. It may take up to 24 hours for the DNS to update for some users (but the old site still works), but it's usually completely seamless.

The only 2 reasons for a site being down that long are; it's deliberate to build hype, or something's gone wrong in the process.

For a company who want all of their trade to go through the website this is hardly a shining example of how it's done.

It's sheer incompetence on the part of GW to have their site down for a whole day and counting. Normally when you revise or replace a website you build and test the new site offline then quickly "flip the switch" to make it go live with little or no interruption of service. What kind of major company actually puts their site down for a whole day or more? It's unprecedented, unprofessional, and mystifying that they would do such a thing. In other words, typically incomprehensible GW behavior.

So, old accounts won't work... meaning that they've nuked their existing mailing list, meaning they can't mail all their previous existing accounts to tell them about the new website. If that's true then wow... really wow.

Anyway, from the top:

Warhammer 40,000... <loading>... Warhammer 40,000 Armies... <loading>... tick Grey Knights <loading> displays all GK choices.

And now there are further Amazon-style modifiers. Well... it takes longer to get to any single thing (GK Troops was 40K Armies>Grey Knight +>Troops), but it's not awful.

GW wrote:There are loads of new functions

Factually incorrect. There are in fact fewer functions given that they've removed specialist and any FAQ/PDF systems completely.

GW wrote:...ranging from new product images and information to an easier, quicker checkout.

A quicker checkout can't hurt, but even so.

GW wrote:We’ll also be posting regular updates here on What’s New Today, bringing you all the latest information about upcoming releases and featuring hobby projects from you, our readers.

Not a new feature either. "What's on Sale Today" hasn't changed.

GW wrote:There are so many changes..

"Changes". They keep using that word...

GW wrote:...the best thing you can do is take a look around for yourself and see what's going on.

Not digging it - it's definitely designed for tablets/iphones now - way harder to navigate on a pc. Boo.

Everything seems the same content-wise though, no missing minis or price rises that I could tell. A lot of the fantasy stuff are in the wrong category now.

Default sort is Highest priced products at top. Giggle. Oh GW.

They really buried the "What's new today." They really hide the fact that stuff is Finecast too. The logo is gone and you have to click "more" on the description to see it's a resin kit.

I do like the bigger pictures when you click on a kit though.

I quite like the new website in terms of looks, nice and clean. The UI takes a bit of getting used to but I don't think it's any worse than before - three clicks and I'm into the troops section. In terms of content, such as FAQs I'm assuming they'll put them up over the next couple of days. I never read the articles anyway so not bothered about those.

My impressions..

1) I like the changes to the shopping experience. Its a better web store.
2) I dislike that its basically only a store. The blog is harder to find and any real sense of product support is gone.
3) I dislike that they are not supporting all the armies. Under the 40k armies list they do not list the Inquisition, nor do they list the Legion of the Damned. There seems to be no reason to exclude these armies.
4) Forgeworld products was never a realistic expectation. In order to supply FW kits they'd have to warehouse them in the USA. To do that they would need to produce them in significantly higher quantities wich would require cheaper materials or a significant mark up. Mark them up and they will quickly be pricing them out of the market. Change the material to traditional plastic and you have to loose detail in several of the kits but also retool the manufacturing process. The direct order method has worked well so far and to be blunt FW is a different company. It may be owned by GW but it has its own officers and holds its own meetings. Expecting GW stores to support the FW line is like expecting GMC dealerships to let you special order a Holden Ute in the united states.
5) The FAQs, while not shocking, was unexpected. I can see where they are going with this and I guess its clear why the didn't bother with any new FAQs in 6 months. If you don't own an ipad and you want to have the latest rules from GW, buy an Ipad. I think its clear any amendments and erratas will only come in the form of digital content updates, and after talking to the black library folks about epubs last week it is painfully clear that GW will likely always produce an ibook codex but will only produce the epub codex when it suits their schedule. The actual questions and answers portion of the process is likely dead for good. This just gets back to point number two.

Typical design by committee mess, far too many competing design elements on the page. Looks better on high res screens than low res screens due to the size of the elements, doesn't seem to follow responsive design, GW really haven't gotten modern website design. Still it loads fast on my phone (Note 3) and the store is easier to navigate than before.

Not liking the removal of all of the actual content either. Not sure why this took so long, it really is pretty basic now that the content has been removed, other than a stupidly long approvals process for the design.

I quite like how you can browse the whole range of an army on one page now, for the painter and modeller I think the site is quite nice, even for the gamer it's easy enough to navigate to a specific force oganisation slot. I quite like how you can pull up the fast attack choices for all armies at the same time for example. I think I actually quite like the new site, except the distinct lack of FAQ's and Erratas.

This, pretty much. It's a generic online store, I don't see why they even bothered with a redesign. And I certainly don't see why anyone besides GW would care about it.

You could actually do that before, it just wasn't obvious. If (previously) you clicked on an army, then you got the home page for that army with a couple of suggestions of what you can buy, on that page was a link to the entire range for that army.

It wasn't obvious, but it was there, they could have just made it a bit clearer.

I like how it looks a lot smoother and the promotion of the models on the pictures, looks more appetising.

But thats it, it just feels like a store now, nothing more, no cool painting articles, free pdf rules, battle dioramas, conversions.

Warhammer is one of my main hobbies, one of the only things in life which actually bring joy and relaxation and to just feel it become an ever increasing exploitable product and less of a hobby, its just fething gakky.

Oh dear, I just realised if you click on "Hive Tyrant", it doesn't show you an assembled Swarmlord, even though you can make a Swarmlord from the kit, it doesn't show it, you have to search separately for the Swarmlord to see the Swarmlord images... it does the same for all the variant kits, so the only way to see all the Baneblade variant images is to go through each one separately... all 8 of them.

Part of me hopes that there will be a mass of complaints about the lack of FAQS, just so that they realise how much people actually care about the rules. Do their customer service personnel work in headquarters, or did they outsource it? If they got a load of calls all about the FAQ topic, it could actually have an affect.

Dude, that's still more money for digital content than for a printed book. Digital content is, once it's created absolutely cost-free, and since they need a digital file to create a printed version, it's not like they had so much more to do to get an ibook.

My guess is "redesigned our website" is something that sounds good in the next financial report. And since making a generic online store is a trivial task (that GW somehow still screwed up), unlike making legitimate improvements in the quality of their products, it's something they can brag about without having to invest any real work or risk losing money. And, perhaps more importantly, it's something that the uninformed shareholders can look at and understand without having to know anything about GW's products (or anything besides their profit numbers). The fact that the vast majority of their customers won't care about the redesign is irrelevant as long as they can make it sound like a Good Business Strategy That Profitable Forward-Thinking Companies Use.

They actually have the audacity to charge you 7€ more without offering something tangible. No delivery, not paper costs, not printing expenses, no nothing, and they want more money for the ebook. Are they in their right minds?!

Doesn't the iBook version come with interactive stuff like an army builder or something? That's usually the justification for the price differences between android and iVersions.

Dude, that's still more money for digital content than for a printed book. Digital content is, once it's created absolutely cost-free, and since they need a digital file to create a printed version, it's not like they had so much more to do to get an ibook.

TBF regarding Ipad codexes, the cost isn't just the cost of printing the book, its covering the cost of the production of the content, i.e. the people who come up with the rules, draw the art, paint the models, photograph it etc, this is recouped in the cost of the products, be it paper, metal, plastic, electronic.

Yes cost of printing will be higher than electronic however GW charge for the codex, not the dead tree its made from, so the fact that E-codexes are the same price as Paper ones isn't an issue, and they charge more for the digi deluxe codexes as they have videos, automatic links to special rules etc when you click on words and the army builder (which is very useful I have found), all of this costs more money to implement than creating the electronic file to be printed on books, the coding to make the interactive codexes takes more man hours, hence higher cost.

It is not just down to the fact you get something physical in your hand. The world seems to forget you don't buy the cost of the physical item, you buy the resources needed to make it, which includes salaries and time.

So, they make a whole chunk of their stock direct-only, then take their website offline for a day.

Buttons don't work any more, just the +/- to the side.
Masses of stock is Web Store Exclusives, being 32 of the 75 Eldar items, and lots of those are electronic or duplicates.
Leading to, where's the ebook Eldar codex? Other ebook items are there, as is the ibook.
The 'include' ticks are nice, but what about an 'exclude'? I want to block all istuff apple-only products, and some armies from my searches.
Gift Lists are gone, as the accounts got wiped.

Does anyone want to tip off Amazon or ebay, and hope they get their legal team to rip this down for us?

I am not disappointed, the new website is what it is, a web store. What is the point of them cluttering up their website with painting articles, when you can find plenty of painting articles elsewhere on the internet? Also GW stopped the free content ages ago.

It's turned into a long list of products, generic and badly laid out. The load times are poor.

The positive is the new pics, which look great. But then they collect about 20-30 on them on a page and it just blends into each other.

Things like the random product slider on the front page full of Imperial Guard heroes just don't seem well thought-out. It's like they've got a feature and thought we'll just stick it here, whilst removing features like the drop down menus that I actually found more useful.

Should have updated the old site in my humble opinion.

I guess I should say it should be a trivial task. Online stores are a well-understood subject, and GW isn't doing anything that requires any special design work. You could probably run the GW website just fine by taking a generic online store template and adding some icons from GW's IP. Which makes it so hilarious that they still couldn't get it working without extended downtime, even if you count its current (apparently) buggy state as "working".

Yeah, and FAQs/errata, who needs those, just cluttering things up.

Actually I liked a lot of the GW painting articles, you can never have too many painting articles, especially since the GW often gave you a more realistic image of what you'd achieve (the 'eavy metal models were often painted with mixed colours and/or photoshopped, so you could easily be deceived in to thinking you could achieve a similar look when really you couldn't).

I don't see why they couldn't, you agree to the terms of the offer and the fine print probably says something about charging you some large amount of money if you refuse to return it. And it's not like it's an unfair policy, if you preorder some stuff, get the free miniature for spending $100, and then cancel your purchase before you're billed for it then you don't deserve to have the reward because you didn't spend the $100.

There was too much content getting in the way. You can hardly expect GW to clog up their intertubes with all that pointless content like FAQs and articles and the like when all people really want to do is buy GW models.

Seriously, purely as a webstore, I like it. As the website for a company producing a range of miniatures games... it's a complete and utter failure, because it's nothing by a webstore. No information on their product, no product support, no hobby material... it's purely a sales vehicle.

The only reason that this would even be an issue is that they have shipped your order to you incomplete. In which case, if you decide to cancel the remainder of your order and purchase the outstanding part of it from somewhere else, that's on their head for selling you stuff they don't actually have to ship to you.

Even if it is legally enforcable (which I would doubt) it's a ridiculously stupid thing to say to potential customers.

It's presumably to avoid any loopholes with people ordering stuff that takes a while to ship, or rejecting it the bulk of it at the store, or similar.

But the more diplomatic way to deal with it is to only ship the mini with the last order batch and take it back if it's refunded. Instead of making the announcement that did.

Would you prefer that they not ship out partial orders until everything has been paid for so that people don't cheat to get the free model?

And I have no problem with people canceling an order to buy the stuff somewhere else. I do have a problem with people claiming a reward for spending $X and then canceling their order but keeping the reward.

This. If you do not return the model, and you cancelled pre-orders to get it, you card should be charged.

That being said, there's standing up for a principle, and the PR cost of being heavy-handed vs just eating the loss of a single tiny plastic sprue with a sunk cost of perhaps 40 cents + 2 or 3 dollars of shipping.

I'm confused why they went with what they did. They used to have armies listed like they were in the codex; whilst now they are shown in a series of pages all jumbled together.

The only way to sort is with a vast array of tickboxes on the left. I don't know, its fast and works and its very streamlined and minimalist but it just seems not much gain and possibly a touch more fiddly.

It's also a great shame they didn't bring back their articles with this; that would have been a prime time to bring them back

Good job I grabbed the pdfs for the specialist games I wanted, it seems the last remnants of the old republic have finally been swept away.

It's a pretty bland webstore, shame any rules support has gone in the trash with various other things, but they have ipad things to sell. It's just so white and dull to look at, but they're pushing this direct-only thing pretty hard now.

I'm glad Forgeworld isn't a part of this new site, the more independence they have from GW main the better IMO.

No, I would prefer that they not take orders for product that they don't have to sell.

If they don't do that, then this won't be an issue in the first place.

Alternately, just excluding pre-orders and backorders from the total spend required to obtain the free miniature would be another (also more customer-friendly) approach.

My take:

No breadcrumb trail. Instead there is a small "Back" link that moves around the page or disappears depending on what type of page you are looking at.
The slideshow on the front page is annoying.
The left side menu uses two different mechanics for making selections, but doesn't allow selection by clicking on names.
The product filters allow you to look for say IG and Tau at the same time, which is nice but confusing and probably not wanted. You have to click them off again.
When you click on a product, the page layout makes the info about your selected product look overshadowed by a larger set of info on "other things they think you might like to buy". You have to do another click to get the full info on the product.
I have already been confused by the separate entries for Hydra and Wyvern into thinking they are different kits, when they are in fact one kit.

Various errors in text and pics, e.g. Codex: Astra Miltarum (All Languages) -- -- understandable though they could have scanned all the text automatically to get it spelt right.

The site is clearly designed primarily as a sales promotion tool rather than an information searching utility. It is more difficult to navigate that it might be. I can't help thinking they could have done better in terms of UX.

It is also astonishing they have deleted all existing user accounts. If they didn't keep that database, they have thrown away years of valuable information on customers.

Yeah, that's a mind-bogglingly bad move.

I find myself wondering if it was a deliberate design choice, or if their website guy just told them it couldn't be done to avoid the hassle...

I think they've stripped out all FAQ and other information. It's purely a webstore - a brand new webstore it seems if Kilkrazy,s comment is right that all user accounts are wiped.

Sometimes you can see why a company makes a choice that isn't the best, but they are forced into it through other factors. Here I'm finding it really hard to see why GW has done this. I guess their new policy is to abandon internet advertising and connection with players and to treat it purely like a webstore - though least they've still got the facebook pages for stores.

........ mind = blown. I thought the Taurox was the worst thing in recent memory, but this is just flat out pants on head.

Interestingly, if you try and reset your password for an old account (without ever creating a new one) the reset page indicates that it successfully generated and mailed you a new password. No email ever arrives, and presumably ever will, and no error message stating you don't exist (anymore) ever appears.

With coding this sloppy I'd hate to see what the back end looks like, vulnerability wise.

I wonder if the recent heartbleed error caused them to react that way to user accounts? It could be that they had to disable access to them whilst they patch up that security breach and then following that accounts will be active again (emails might simply also be overloaded with requests for changes).

The Data Protection Act does not require you to disable or delete user accounts because you change the design of your web site.

If you go to log in or register on the new site, it tells you the accounts from the old store are no longer active.

They may still hold that info, but why not use it for the benefit of customers? It used to tell you what stuff you had ordered in the past.

IDK about buying GW stuff, but I sometimes make the mistake of buying something on Amazon that I bought before. Their site pops up a warning if you put a duplicate item in your shopping basket, to help avoid that.

My first impression is...I don't really like it.

I guess I can't blame them for wanting to modernize the site design. Problem is, modern website design sucks balls. It is based on mistaken ideas that people love blogs and if a website layout imitates blog-style, people think it's hip and cool. In reality, all sensible people hate blogs.
Another thing is modern tendency to minimalism, which shows in lack of all kinds of borders and fields. This is meant to look slick and modern, but it looks and feels jumbled and confused.

Might not be possible. If the store is being set up by a different company than the previous, then it may be more difficult than it's worth to migrate that customer data. It may not seem to make a lot of sense but I've seen it often in my work as a software tester; new company takes over equals new product with no connection to the old.

It's worse in every conceivable way. Bad default ordering? Check. No gaming support? Check. More clicks to navigate? Check. More obfuscation of dual kits? Check. More confusing to navigate? Check.

The only thing which is better is the front page, which is now less cluttered. Every single other thing which has been changed is far worse for it IMO. I don't even know who it targets - it won't make new players happy because the highest cost default ordering is very off putting to customers, it won't appeal to veterans because they dropped all support and it doesn't help anyone in between because the dual kits are named differently on the store to their ACTUAL product name. If someone had handed me this website design, I'd have told them to redo it all, because it's pure garbage. Disappointed doesn't even cover it.

I like the new layout of the store. Just feels much more 21st Century. Also looks like it'd be significantly easier to navigate on my phone should I ever feel the need to do that.

The complete disappearance of the FAQ/Errata section is disconcerting though.

Also the limited edition miniature is ugly as sin. The hell is up with that sword? Forget the stupid scabbard for a second. What the hell is it even attached to? Is that supposed to be on his belt? It's just kind of floating there on his front. Totally, totally stupid. And the way he's holding his storm bolter is totally awkward and mighty stupid as well.

Might not be possible. If the store is being set up by a different company than the previous, then it may be more difficult than it's worth to migrate that customer data. It may not seem to make a lot of sense but I've seen it often in my work as a software tester; new company takes over equals new product with no connection to the old.

And that's not a big deal with, say, enterprise office users having to all change their passwords to get into whatever; where the impact to business is just annoyed lusers, but it's a little different with a customer-facing webstore like this where every little roadblock you throw up directly equals a nonzero number of lost sales. The requirement to migrate user data should have been a contracted requirement, I think.

Look again, Hive. Look at the torso. There's a notch in the belt. I assume the others side of the sword has the corresponding notch to fit it in snugly.

Which makes it even that much more awkward and stupid.

It shouldn't be hard to migrate the basic account data of the username, name and address, and payment details. Just a bit of scripting to output the necessary fields and take them into the new database. Frankly, if the old database was supported in a proper system, all you actually need to do is to build the new website on top of the old database. Relational databases are not exactly rocket science.

The record of past purchases also would be valuable to GW.

Foe example, they used to know where I live, my local GW shop, and what things I bought, which indicates the armies I am interested in.

That information could be used to send me special offers, invitations to events, info about new units for my armies, and so on.

All of that could be sent out nearly automatically to a relevant group of users. You could for example contact all Tau players in Scotland who haven't bought a unit for more than a year, and send them an offer to visit their local shop for a free pot of paint.

Fill in the notch with some greenstuff and you're good to go. There's a lot not to like about the model but that notch is hardly a big deal.

Last I checked the FW kit is significantly more expensive - they also do kits of many of the other daemon lords; but only the lord of change is limited order (its the only limited order for Fantasy - excluding chaos magic cards which are a broken link last I checked)

It does however force you to remove data which is not being used for the purpose for which it was collected. If it is no longer being used by the store then they'll have to delete the personal data. They could have anonymised that data and are keeping. As to why it was not migrated over, I'd guess that the new system is not 100% similar to the old one and their supplier was going to charge too much for the migration

That they launch a seperate "games workshop rules, erratas & FAQ's" website that becomes the sole mouthpiece regarding rules (ie, no more conflicting FAQ's and posts by the facebook page)

However...this is a slim hope. I'm more of the mind that this is their whole sale dropping of after-market support for rules after they've been written. GW hasn't had a facebook page for awhile, Up until a few weeks ago they had digital editions, forgeworld and black library but they abandoned it, along with its twitter. Because any connection to negative comments, scrutiny or legitimate questions must be avoided and buried at all costs.

Well if it's a new company doing the website there are data protection laws about not sharing your private info (name and address) with another company without your consent. You don't have to share the data. You just share the field structure of the relational database that contains the data, and provide dummy data for test purposes.

You don't have to re-register to accept new terms and conditions. eBay sends out new terms and conditions fairly often, and you accept them by continuing to use the web site.

No legal requirement to keep customer records beyond those required for accounting proposes, and I would expect that to be separate to the website customer records to some extent. There is no issue with giving a company re-doing the website the information, as long as it is used in line with the reason the data was collected. For example, the third party could move your data to a new server for GW, or even send out marketing on GWs behalf, but if they used it for cold calling you about web design, or for some other reason there would be a problem.

Main problem with that is that it requires effort from GW and them to admit mistakes, two things that recently they refuse to do. They have been dumping things that they should be doing onto the community because they aren't a "rules company", despite charging insane prices for rules and splitting them up into DLCs.
