as for the base choice... yeah... the last one looks off... the other way around definitely look not right... and maybe you could add even some weight to the base as well?
after al some sand inside the hollow models couldn´t hurt?
and if the puple is more dominant than the turquoise then the tau scheme could work...
and no... no glowy rod insde the pylon... would make it look as if the pyramide would "shoot" at the flyer...
Thanks Vik, although it wasn't the win, just the style prize The purple/turquoise you can see a little test of on the painted fire warrior.
Dr H wrote:Good work on the bases. Good ideas too.
Purple and Turquoise work well and yellow is quite a good spot colour to go with that.
And good point Vik about the glow of the necron thing.
Yellow works as a spot colour for me, and I'm off the glow stick. I might add some glow between the tiled plates of the cron terrain. I'll reach a conclusion about which gets which base at the end! What about cron colours?
hmm... the cron colors... i like those white ceramic looking crons... lots of options... but the pyramide should then be of darker material...
and i still remember the tau... but i am currently looking through your gallery and not finding him... but boy did i find some awesome minis there ....wow...
Well I might try some neutral ceramic colours on the pyramid then. The fire warrior is at the base of the pyramid in the first of the 3 most recent pics, although he needs some spots I might make the flyer yellowy then. Thanks for the comments guys!
Oh yes, I knew there was something else to comment on. Let me see...
Not done any Necrons myself yet so not thought about colours for them, but... one scheme I definitely plan on using is like I used on the Androids from Space Crusade; a sort of cream/bone colour with metal details...
As for flipping the colour scheme, that could make the crashed flyer quite bright and may detract from the actual model that that is supposed to just be the base for... But it might be a nice scheme...
A dangerous part of Me has started thinking pre-heresy...
i bet it has to do with your wallet part of your brain
and i will keep my gob shut for the tau scheme as i am out of my comfy zone here... i am not really firm with tau and always get an akward feeling about them... i know far too less ...
but i like the necron scheme... bone colored always gets me sitting upright!
Very nice. As always I admire your care and paintstaking attention to detail when it comes to building your miniatures. I don't think I've ever seen one that wasn't converted or kit-bashed in some way, even if only in terms of base decoration.

Well, tis true but I do have a looooooooooooooot of unpainted marines. About 3000pts built for one thing. They could go Death Guard or Emperor's children, if I were so minded. You're allowed not to like the Tau btw but glad you like the crons! was going to go with purple glow but green works better as a contrast against the Tau.

It's the trade-off with the wife doing cakes for wedding flowers. I am actually sick of the whole cake thing tbh, as I am not seeing my friends at all and, to add to it, I completely buggered up a chocolate sponge today which I can do in my sleep.
Spoiler:
In no way am I also dreading seeing my parents tomorrow
As an aside, I am massively unimpressed with Army Painter's brushes. I have destroyed 3 of them in a matter of weeks. Now I know I'm hard on brushes, but I still have citadel masters brushes from, like, 6 years ago. Today, life rolled a .
Anyway:
More rubble to add, and the 2 guys with detonators to position. Then darkshade all the cloth and I think it'll be done. Cautiously, the crash-site base is strong enough to hold the Eagle, too.
Be kind or I might Or get a baseball bat, whatever.
No, I agree. I have trained myself to be a lot less brutal on brushes, and the Army Painter ones just *DIE*. I'm even using B&J brush cleasner and preserver, and avoiding getting paint in the ferrule. Nope! Damn things just fray apart.
Guess I'm going to have to shell out for some Windsor and Newtons.
Those bases look brilliant dude! really looks like the eagle is hovering above the plinth! and the colour for the Necron parts is perfect I might be saying that as it was what i was going to do myself with my own Necrons lol! I think the bone scheme works so well with them even if they are gonna be smashed on a base!
The Tau in the Piranha still sitting there cracked me up. I guess their seat belts are VERY strong.
Winsor and Newton Series 7 are the way to go. Be sure to get regular series 7 and not the series 7 Miniature version. I keep trying various brushes, but I find myself always going back to the Series 7s.
where i am a bit puzzled tho is... why does the crew still hold on tight to their controls???.... fling around arms.... that would be more likley...
Taus are like goats Vik, when they're under shock they freeze in the position they are
Great job Graven, model and storytelling on the base are just awesome

Thanks guys. I really tried to tell a story with these; I ended up switching the 2 guys with detonantors, whilst the crouching guy is actually missing a foot and there's a little trail of cyan blood around the back.
Cheers for all the brush-tips. I shall investigate.
Anyway, what am I up to? Well, been working on my SoB, just getting them built and based just now. Won't bore you with the grunts, but other stuff:

More silly backpacks:
And the beginnings of yet more winged death!
Also, further adventures in the garage revealed this lot, scavenged by the wife from work:

Yeah, the back two are more xeno-like, the front ones are more mud brick house things.
lol, someone has to make a boob gun, get to it. I suspect that that would work best as a Tau emplacement...?

Turret is 2 sets of havoc launchers, typhoons fronts, razorback mount, side plaques from dark talon. Glad it looks "real"! And yeah, vindicator dozer blades are huge again, dark talon bit used, for maximum silliness.
That looks epic! Right, now I need 3 of those dozers! Do bits sites carry them?
I'll keep all the extra bits from the exorcist for you for sure, anything in particular? There should be a fair few bits spare as I mainly need the organ to pimp out my Chaplain's ride. Actually, what's your paint scheme on these? The two armies would be lovely teammates.
Yeah, but eBay bitz sellers are probably better for these - very pricey on bitz sites. Any bits you can spare, actually, the organ is the bit I think looks daft! Front hatch especially, as you can see this rhino is lacking in that department

Ooft yeh, looks like the upgrade sprue is going for £15 each and the blades are £10. I'll put that on hold, haha! Actually, I'm getting a bit carried away, I don't think they'll add much to this project so I'll scrap that idea.
I'm having a look through the dedicated bits box for this army and I have most of Exorcist left over. I've taken the 3 part organ, the servitor, the metal sister, the two metal front side panels and the metal parchment piece from the front of the keyboard. I've also clipped a few of the smaller pieces from the SoB tank upgrade sprue but most of it is still there by the looks of it. The entirety of the Rhino is also there. And, I have the wings from a box SGuard which I see you are using.
The ORIGINAL Nuka Cola machine that started the =]L[=.
A giant bag of bits and stuff. Seriously. Epic. Even I don't know what'll be in it. But I'm stripping down my collection to focus on Minotaurs and IG.

The contest theme:
Discarded treasure. I am on a major recycling kick in my life. Recycling, freecyling, upcycling. Reduce and reuse. And it drives me insane when I throw away what should be perfectly good materials!
The rules:
You must create a piece of terrain the size of a CD/DVD. The terrain must utilize leftover modelling supplies. Examples of this are paint pots, plastic sprues, discarded packaging, and leftover plasticard. The debris of completed projects, normally placed into the dustbin. The terrain must be usable in a game of Warhammer 40K, but there are bonus points for making items usable in more than one game system. Multiple terrain pieces ARE allowed, as long as, collectively, they are the size of a CD/DVD. They should also maintain a similar theme (IE: You've taken four 40mm bases and built 4 jungle-themed objective markers). There is no required terrain type, the goal is to show people how to recycle things they would normally throw away into usable game terrain.
While there is no height restriction, consideration for newbie players and/or workability on the battlefield should be kept in mind.
Scoring:
A maximum score of 100 is possible. Ties will be broken by the judges. If the judges are deadlocked, I will call upon readers of this plog to vote. If THAT deadlocks, I'll declare a tie, and divide up the prizes appropriately.
Competition requirements:
These are not cumulative. A few bitz used to enhance the terrain does not count toward percentage, but loading up your entry with bitz (instead of recycled parts) will not score high. Imagine you're a new modeler, and you have a few leftovers from your initial purchases.
Entry is 25% recycled materials or less - 0 points
Entry is around 50% recycled materials - 10 points
Entry is around 75% recycled materials - 25 points
Entry is around 100% recycled materials - 40 points
Modeling:
These points ARE cumulative. A focus on techniques and designs that are easy to copy/emulate will score more points, here. You're helping the masses make terrain. A unique entry might be something that makes the judges go 'ah-ha, that's a GREAT idea'. This is where you can score points for originality of design and making a cool scene or mini-diorama.
Entry is easy for a newbie to duplicate - 10 points
Entry shows a unique idea - 10 points
Entry is visually interesting - 10 points
Entry is usable for more than just Warhammer 40K - 10 points
Painting:
Points are not cumulative. Minimum three colors. Washes and highlights to qualify as well painted, at a minimum. Amazingly well painted is something that wows the judges.
Entry is painted - 10 points
Entry is well painted - 15 points
Entry is amazingly well painted - 20 points
-----------
Weight will be given to people who come up with UNIQUE, creative uses for things most people throw away. Things thrown away: bits of dried putty, paint pots, dried paint, sprues, packaging materials, chopped up plasticard.
You may not use existing terrain or other creations, as with all League competitions, show your work. Deadline for entries is August 8th, 2013. Judging will occur a few days later, over the weekend. There will be no extensions allowed, as this is not a complex 'theme'.
Submit your "WiP" photograph ASAP. With your completed photograph, submit an explanation of what you've built, and what materials you used, as if you were writing a short tutorial.
Myself and gits are helping out with the judging - go on, take a punt!
So, crazy busy today, doing a wedding cake for a wedding we're going to tomorrow: as such, no hobby time. For those of you that I said I'd send stuff to, this (1840) is the first time I've stopped today - really sorry, I'll get to the post on Monday.
Anyway, I have very slightly tweaked the exorcist:
I think I'm going to leave those gaps in the dozer open, your thoughts? BTW, as asked before, my SoB scheme is stone and turquoise. I have accepted that there is this ordo theme linking all my stuff: note that the blog's title has duly changed - well, ish. I also tracked down the promo =I= and the rt ordo malleus termie =I= - now all I need is the rt =I= termie with the bionic leg and I will be a happy chappy.
Hey ho, sorry for brevity of update and all,
graven
Such was my thinking.
Oh! I forgot, I did do something else today, I threw together a top hatch for one of my GK Razorbacks so I can use it as a Death Cult Rhino:
The top plate is from Maxmini's rocket pods (shoddy casting on those, but more on that another time), the hatch from rescue rhino TM plus quite a lot of gs! There are a couple of Crusaders that will go with this lot - I think next to do will be them and Rhia Jacoba, so that's another squad done.
Still. I shall try tomorrow but it's my anniversary so the boss might disapprove. Have to do it before Thursday as I'm off on me holidays then.
I'm also running down my supplies - no superglue, no primer - and partly in an effort to force myself to get on with painting. However, the starboard wing has dropped off the eagle. utter utter utter it landed on Karamazov; turns out finecast can be surprisingly bouncy.
Humpf.
Next up, finishing off the death cult's gang.
The next to be done would be the female Uriah. I like the dark red along with the turquoise, wasn't sure it would work. I feel this has potential somewhere else, no idea what though.
Hey ho,
Graven
well.... happy anniversary! what does your boss expect you to come up with? flowers? choclate? mine is at the end of the coming week... and i still am without anything....
and it is so damn hot to go out shopping with two kids on the trail...argh...
your death cult gang members...good looking... a bit of a modern feel to them... those cowls have a bit of a sweatshirt hood feel to them... a bit of gangsta look thus^^...
will they stay that dark or will you brighten them up a bit more?
Well, we don't really do anything, Tbh, just a card. In fact, last year she forgot so this year she bought us some chocolates to share. We were going to go out for a bite with the kids but her sister rang up and offered to take them overnight, so we get a rare date night.
As for the crusaders, they're going to stay pretty grimdark I'll try to get a shot alongside the assassins, if I can get Jacoba done.
Thanks y'all. Just off to take the kids to the sister, huzzah. Till then, further proof that the wife is awesome - I got a bit of painting done:
Arco-Flagellants which, like all my original build of servitors etc for my GK, are made from WM Drudge Mind Slaves -
And an early WIP of Rhia Jacoba, my counts-as Uriah Jacobus -
I know folk go on about new models, but jings, this is an absolute beauty. I have another, and it really makes me want to break out all my confrontation minis (which, judging by the rumour mill, will be very useful in a month or so); I'm seriously considering Crusader's colour scheme for a gang or two.
Back from awesome tapas, beer and sacrifices to a dark god. Now too warm and drinking tea, because we're British happy that folk are looking kindly on the grimdark flagellants, I know what you mean about the red leather/shotgun combo she is now finished (boss was watching some other woman's baby) but I'm too far from the mini and value my life too much.
hmmm.... my wife and me always look in a special way to lil babies... well... i dunno if there will ever be a number three for us... we ´re still servicable in that direction... but seeing our sons... well they grew up to such fine kids... it would need then to start all over... sleepless nights... lots of poo and the yelling... but then you see a small winston churchill again and we go all oooooo^^
Yeah, another machine for turning money into poo might happen someday but it's hard enough with the two I've got As for dark god, well the pink one, clearly On an entirely separate (well, not really) note it really bugs me that grimdark chaos females are almost always slaaneshi. How about nurgle plague hags with suppurating nipples? Bah.
hurhurhur... be careful or you have more machines than you have energy to operate them
and well... that opens the complete cheescake issue again... if you ask me... i want boobarmor and i want cheescake marines and guard... if i add a fighting female to my troops where is the point in having her look sensible? for that i have my men
but... i think we can all skip out on nurgle fems... if you are into this... go...look for your landlords lady the one that yells at you for not wiping your shoes and so on...
Yeah, I understand the cheesecake argument. Just rambling.
Any-hoo, Jacoba, as promised, although strangely dark pic. Hmm.
I've got a couple of other hangers-on I might get done today, but I suspect this is me for the next week of so (week-off/wee-cough - yay terrible puns ), and will largely be reduced to lurking through limited wifi availability.
Also, entirely unrelated, great article in today's Daily Telegraph (of all places) demanding that David Cameron ban WHFB rather than porn.
Adios, amigos, graven
Edit - aforementioned hanger-on, Ordo Xenos servitor.
Also, I have an idea for a contest when I come back. I'll float some ideas on here over the next week or so, hopefully.
Brilliant updates, I particularly like the new Servitor! Keep it up, bud. And your considering a competition? Man, I'm going to be burnt out by the end of this year.

P.S. I'll get down to the Post Office tomorrow.
Thanks man, and don't sweat running down to the old PO
And, yeah, the contest. My vague idea is a Great Repurposing: using minis for systems other than they are originally intended, such as (say) Dark Age for Death Cult or Urban War for Infinity. Basically, you have to take a model and make it recognisably part of an army for a different game system. I'm sure that most folk will go for making stuff for 40k, but I'm trying to be open minded. Also, I wonder whether to allow WFB>40k (or vice-versa)?
Sounds like great fun, I have a tonne of ideas already. Scale is quite constraining and makes it a lot easier to convert Infinity into 40k, for example, than the other way around. The other challenge will be designing the rules. Should most of the original miniature still be visible? Otherwise you could just cover it up. Should the miniature be playable/fit the scale of it's intended game or just match the aesthetic?
I think you can be more than quietly pleased with them. Anyway don't want people to think I'm trying to butter up the judges...
Sounds like an interesting and amusing idea for a competition. Would definitely want to watch that even if I didn't compete.
As Casey says, the rules will have to be water-tight.
Good points chaps. I'm going to work out the rules thoroughly I hope! The idea is that you take a mini from one system and it be playable in another, and at the end of the day anyone trying to be awkward just won't win recognisable is another matter, however, the aim is to encourage creativity in modelling, painting and recycling!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and glad the Servitor is getting much love. it is a fab little model.
Speaking of repurposing:
The middle one is clearly a "real" model, albeit with a plasma. The other two are kitbashes where the base model is an Empire Battle Wizard. This would be one type of Repurposing.
On the other hand (still very WIP):
A WM Cephalyx, Dark Age Saint and Confrontation Griffon thingy, all repurposed for the Ordo.
The idea then is that they're more than just stuck on a new base and called counts-as - they need at least minor changes and recognisable paintjobs.
How does that sound?
BTW I have, I think, some cracking prizes lined up for this; all stuff to be, yeah you guessed it - repurposed
Really nice examples! I think almost everyone will convert something to fit 40k but that's not something you can get around. Will there be an upper limit on the alterations you can make? I'm trying to figure out at what point you start getting marked down for changing the original miniature too much.
i was about to chime in with all the others abou the servitor being my favorite of the last new models... but then the Cephalyx appeared... man that is a cool fella...really... !

Briancj wrote: It is a good idea. My bias, of course, is to favor moving figs out of WFB/40K and into some other game system.
A tough job though, wouldn't you say? Heroic scale, by design, makes GW products hard tobreuse elsewhere. As an Infinity player I could only really imagine making a TAG or Vehicle from GW stuff to fit truescale.
Casey's Law wrote:Really nice examples! I think almost everyone will convert something to fit 40k but that's not something you can get around. That's the theory! And no, no upper limit- I once used an ambull as the skeleton for a confrontation abomination, gs'd over the whole thing - as long as there's component WIPs, who am I to suppress creativity?!

Cheers if I have the time I will. After all I do have a 150 man IG army with 5 GW models in it. Is a paint job and correct use enough or do you desire something more esoteric?
Well it'll be marked based on imaginative adaptation, so you could, for instance, take a wargames foundry greatcoat and go, "Hey, look, he's DKOK" which would be OK, but I'd rather there was some rebuilding involved also (like your confrontation>admech stuff).

From and To, I suppose. Take an Eldar Jetbike or Vyper, but instead of a rider/ driver, build up a solid shell and add some bits to make it match Wraithguard/Wraithlord heads.
Enjoy your holiday, mate!
OK, to be clear it would need to NOT be a 40k>40k conversion. It could however be WFB > 40k with 40k bits, as per the chick in your blog.
Dang. I really need to write out these rules! Any suggestions before i put them up?

Ah, gotcha. I was responding to the cool Landspeeder you did for Panda's contest. The Dreadnought sarcophagus reminded me of what I was thinking of with the jetbikes/vypers.
But that sounds like a cool idea for a contest.... I plan on doing some of that for my Eldar, but I don't think they'll be very original....

Depending on how strongly you feel about it you might consider making it specifically about repurposing a GW miniature for another system? That's a bigger statement/stronger theme which could be good or bad depending on your motivation. Also remember to include rules on bases and such. The DPC rules might be worth checking as they cover 99% of issues.

DPC? And I think I want to leave this open to folk as much as possible - there are people going both ways to and from GW, this is about spuring folk onto using stuff in imaginative ways. BTW, I got the enormous package from you thanks mate and got back from Spain to find the bits I'm sending you at the bottom of a suitcase - they are now definitely en route to you

Good man, and yes, absolutely.
Should have a working version of contest rules later today or tomorrow. In the mean time, having seen how much folk are raising the bar with the Speed contest, I leave you what my deranged brain came up with as a base for the LS Tempest:
Can't quite believe it balances.

I shall endeavour to do so, mate.
Also, here is my outline of the Contest rules, shamelessly adapted from Briancj's:
Spoiler:
The Great Repurposing Contest
Please spread this around on your plogs. Thanks.
--------------
The contest theme: Repurposing – that is taking a miniature from one system and remodelling, repainting or otherwise repurposing it for another. We all go through phases in our gaming, and often pretty love-hate with GW. The aim is to spur creativity and use what you have lying around to some other, more current purpose.
The rules: The piece must be recognisably part of the system you are aiming for. Generic future soldiers used as guard wouldn’t cut it; with the addition of aquilae, they would (at least, at a basic level). You need to provide clear pictures of your base model and bits, indicating what system it is from, and explain what system you are repurposing it for. The more imaginative and creative your approach, the greater your overall chance of success. There is no limitation on what system you repurpose to and from; you can stay within the same manufacturer (for example, Spartan’s Dystopian Wars to Uncharted Seas) or entirely different (for example, an Urban War Viridian to WH40k Guardsman). Crossing manufacturers will, however, be rewarded.
Scoring:
A maximum score of 100 is possible. Ties will be broken by the judges. If the judges are deadlocked, I will call upon readers of this plog to vote. If THAT deadlocks, I'll declare a tie, and divide up the prizes appropriately.
Repurposing: Core Model. These points are not cumulative; imaginative use of bits from a range of manufacturers (or just random stuff) will count in your favour. Core model is declared simply to be “for another system” - 0 points Core model is from the same manufacturer – up to 10 points Core model is from a different manufacturer – up to 15 points
Basing: I love a good base. I’m not going to be shy in including that as a criterion. These points ARE cumulative. Model is based – 0 points Model is based in a way that repurposes other items – up to 10 points Model is based in a way that adds narrative – up to 10 points
Modeling: These points ARE cumulative. A focus on techniques and designs that are easy to copy/emulate will score more points, here. You're helping the masses make terrain. A unique entry might be something that makes the judges go 'ah-ha, that's a GREAT idea'. This is where you can score points for originality of design. Entry shows a unique idea - 10 points Entry is visually interesting - 10 points Entry is visually distinct from the original Core Model- 10 points
Painting: Points are not cumulative. Minimum three colors. Washes and highlights to qualify as well painted, at a minimum. Amazingly well painted is something that wows the judges. Roughly, painting scores will be as follows Entry is painted to a basic standard - 10 points Entry is well painted - 15 points Entry s well painted and uses unusual techniques - 25 Entry is amazingly well painted - 35 points
-----------
Weight will be given to people who come up with UNIQUE, creative uses for things lying around in bits boxes! You may not use creations, and as with all League competitions, show your work. Deadline for entries is Thursday September 26th, 2013. Judging will occur a few days later, over the weekend. There will be no extensions allowed, as you’ve got plenty of time and had a heads-up already.
Submit your "WiP" photograph ASAP here in The Ordo Bloggit. With your completed photograph, submit an explanation of what you’ve repurposed for.
The prizes: Oh-ho-ho. The prizes are very much in keeping with the theme also. But I’ll keep you in suspense just a little longer on that one till we decide to give it the Go light (19th August, probably).
Well that would be one way of explaining all the gaps I spent an hour with liquid gs filling today, actually. I've redone the exarch's base - I'm planning on doing him predominantly white over red base, as if glowing - against the black of the DW tempest.
I love that empire battle wizard - the way you've painted him is very grimdark 40k though so he looks the part.
I'm not 100% percent sure that using a thermic lance as a prop for a landspeeder works visually. But it would look the part if you painted it to look like he is burning a hole in the bottom of it. Also I'm amazed it doesn't bend with that on top!!

The plastic empire battle wizard kit is constant source of joy. There was a contest a while back for converting fantasy wizards into 40k, I took a lot of inspiration from it.
I know what you mean, but I like the idea of him catching a swipe at it as it goes past. I'm still really torn on colour schemes for him - I'm considering 1) Classic fire dragon (red, yellow helm) 2) Red blended up through orange/yellow/white 3) Green, for a really striking contrast 4) Bone with purple helm (cormadepanda's scheme)
Bearing in mind the Tempest will be black - any thoughts? The other thing is whether to actually do a thermite lance blast emerging from the other side. I'm not in theory averse to it (although I have no idea what it would look like) but it turns a playable model on a (theoretically) cool base into a diorama.
and as for the updated base... i like that idea... yet...i think a lil piece of clear plastic rod is in order... just placing it on a gun... i don´t think so that any eldar would fight that way as to do such a close shot...?
Hurrah! I take your point Vik but the hover-height of LS happens to be exactly the clearance of a thermite lance. Too good an opportunity not to use!
Also, I hate you all The 2nd shot gives a truer indication of the fact that the cinematic is coming out at the right angle (I range a piece of wire all the way through the model. Yay.) Should I have it ending in spray or a thin beam?
ryanroberts wrote: I'm in for the repurposing contest! Where do i sign up?
Right here, and welcome aboard! I think that given the enthusiasm I'm just going to declare this contest... open! Myself and Briancj will be judging. I've had some excellent feedback on the rules, which I'm going to repost:

The prizes:
Okay, so in keeping with the theme of the contest, the prize pool is stuff that you could repurpose to other systems. There's 4 to choose from:
Scibor Sci-Fi Knight (Templar #6) (Although doesn't come with scenic base)
Top 3, and a Rule of Cool prize (to be given to one entry for sheer coolness!). The prizes listed are not in order - first place, first choice, and so on. Oh - and just to add more fuel to the fire, I'm going to do participation prizes.
Yup.
As in, you finish, you get something.
Guaranteed.
Ooh, mysterious!
So what are you waiting for?
And the very best of luck to you all!
Entrants so far: Ryanroberts (PIP) Llamahead (Complete) storag (WIP) Viktor Von Domm (WIP) Gitsplitta (PIP) Casey's Law (WIP) Skalk Bloodaxe (PIP) Alfndrate (WIP)
Well I had best get some pictures sorted then- this actually gives me an incentive to do something I've wanted to do for a while.
Things to follow...
Automatically Appended Next Post: Right, this is the start of my entry into the"Repurposing Contest".
I'm starting with this (sorry for the stock photo- I had already broken it before I had chance to take a picture), an AT-43 Karman, and turning it into a 40K Ork.
I've already pulled off his gorilla head and replaced his feet with some Ork boots chopped off of one of the plastic Boyz sprues, and started to add some Orky bitz! Going to need a fair bit of green stuffing on this one!
And the pack thing on his back is crying out to be grunged up, so I'm thinking Stormboy.
I'm not one for remembering to take WIP pictures (I tend to get in the zone and don't come out until I'm finished), so the next likely shot would be a finished picture!
cool prices... i have atm no idea... but i have plenty of non GW minis alrady so finding a suitable piece is not that hard...

DPC=Dakka Painting Challenge.
And yes, it has been said that I have an enormous package. Glad you liked, I got the bits through too thanks mate, well chuffed.
The competition sounds like great fun, I'm definitely on board but I'll be making a start near the end of this month if that's cool?
The enthusiasm for this is making me chuffed as chuffed thing covered in... chuff. Folk can start whenever, just want to set the ball rolling. Incidentally, the prizes are not "in order" - first place gets to pick theirs, and so on. I'll edit the main post. I may have more prizes in store if there's a particularly high standard/range.
In other news, I'm just about done with the non-modular SoB tank (the rescue one):
Still a wee bit of clean-up a gs work here and there to do.
But wait, graven, where is that tasty plough of doom? Ah, well, that's going to go on the heavily armoured & modular tank that is still to come. Should crank it out over the next couple of days, depends if I can locate a specific bit for it or not.

Thanks Vik, they do scream Ork don't they?! I converted/repurposed one of their weird skimmer vehicle things, into an early days of aviation/steam punk inspired Imperial Guard flyer a while back.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/496398.page I was toying with redoing it for this competition but decided it wouldn't be much of a challenge as it's mainly a re-paint and just a re-sculpt of the pilot that I want to do.
ach... me aching heart... ryan... you simply had to do it, eh? now i need to see where to find that or die trying to scratchbuild that piece of art... i like those curvy flying machines! looks spectacular...
i think we are in for a treat here with you!
and graven... very posh looking... i am more than eager to see where this is going! awaiting painted WIP update in ten...nine...eight....*snip*
Though be warned, it was made from some sort of weird rubbery plastic that will gunk up files, razor saws, drill bits etc! And is a female canine to glue together without prep work!
well then it is a good thing that my budget is so low... i could tunnel with^^...
no i am already looking at your gallery... very nice stuff you have there... i commented and voted on some pics... the bunny sniper was my favorite!...
soon i might scratchbuild something that resembles your build tho... those round curves really speak to me... and i like the flight jacket you did... looks very fitting!!!
And WIPs of the next one. This is to be more heavily armoured, more repressor style and will get the giant plough: The top section of this is going to be hell to build and has already involved the bone saw...
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oops, front view with plough:
And pips of the fire dragon and tempest: bonus points to the first person who works out original chapter. Anon, graven
inmygravenimage, the base for the Tempest is getting me all excited- much better than the bog standard plastic flying stands, and the Sisters tank is looking good, can't wait to see what style of painting you opt for.
I've finished the build and all the green stuffing on my Repurposing entry, filled gaps and made new straps for the armour plating and jetpack thingymajig, and made a nice and simple base.
Took me a while to find a suitable scaled Ork head, the plastic boyz just looked too small, kind of like the Goombas from the Super Mario movie.
This head looks a little too large in my opinion but it does give a nice, false perspective of him leaping forwards when viewed from the front. Now just to get him prepped for painting! (And it seems I am able to stop and do WIP shots- perhaps a blog of my many, many projects in the near future?)

Very nice! Oh and I got a second package from you yesterday! Thank you very much! I think I have everything I need for my marines now, if only I had the time to work on them.
Thanks guys! Really appreciate all the feedback.
Fire Dragon approaches completion. Sorry about the flash, but the silver really is very bright, which was part of the plan. The glow is obviously still ongoing.
Had a swell day today, Metropolis came by and we chewed the geek fat a while and kids ran riot - 5 boys, 3-11. Madness

Thanks mate! And yes, the lance is not as far along as the rest. I had originally planned burnished gold for it, but I'm glad I stuck with silver. However, I'll add some contrasts in other colours to the pipework at the very least. Fair point.

Course, now I want to paint bright coloured pretty stuff but, meantime, progress on the Tempest:
i think the burnished gold would be too near to the armor of the eldar... then these colors would bite each other... so silver was indeed the better choice!
(tho..if you had made the eldar green in scheme then a burnished golden lance would have been perfect^^)
My entry for the great repurposing. Take one Rapier Miniatures Griffon designed as an antagonist for Classical Grecian forces and take a Bacchus War of the Roses Mounted Commander.
Add hacksaw and insanity
Voila a mounted commander on Griffon or Baron Tourville of New Haven.
Please note those models are 6mm and that's a 25mm square base. Basically I chopped of the wings. With difficulty as they are cast together and chopped the griffon in half. Then I added the middle bit of the mounted commander with the horse and saddle between the head and hind quarter of the Griffon. I then stuck the back of the Griffon back on.
well i say under the circumstances of that harsh light of a flash up this close many details get shown rather wrong or even bader... shows stufff that isn´t to be seen under usual light scources...so i think no fear!
Sweet progress, graven! And that looks awesome too, Vik.
Not a clue what I'm entering yet but does it have to start as a wargaming miniature from a game system? I just rescued two miniature display cars that I was throwing out because I noticed they are pretty close to 30mm scale. I'm considering repurposing them.

Not sure which is the money shot LMK your thoughts mes amis! Thanks for the excellent C&C thus far. BTW, I did go with =I= red missiles to purge heresy, and it's Emperor's Children in origin.
Hey ho,

And thanks for the conformation, if I have time I might tackle turning a 60mm scale H2 SUV into some sort of truck for Infinity(diorama) or my Norks. If I don't have the time I'll see what else I have available to repurpose on a smaller scale. That's the problem with these competitions, I get an idea, it grows and before I know it it's too big a project to finish in time.
Hah, that's awesome dude - the money shot for me is the underneath view showing the (insert weapon name here) burning through the Tempest hull (sorry, I have no idea what that Eldar dude is firing )
And Ronin - I haven't seen those minis for yonks. Had a few but lost them many moons ago...

Ah yes, supply drop from the divine Miss Dee - a ton of ST bits including 10 pairs of wings - seraphim next on to-build list, assuming I don't get distracted by your supplies I know there's a penitent pilot there and I have 3 nos sentinels in the garage so I might get side tracked there As for flamers a repressor has heavy flamer and tl storm bolter. Tanks are all modular (well, the 3 with "altars") so the can run as any possible sob loadout - immolator with heavy flamers, mm or hb, repressor, rhino or exorcist.

Hey guys,
Sorry it's been awfully quiet over here. I had a job interview Weds which I really, really wanted and didn't get. Was very stressed in the run-up and been pretty bummed out about it. Anyway, bouncing back (because really, what else can I do?) and hope to have updates (and reboot the contest) later.
Thanks guys. As llama said in his own blog, not the job, it's the career. Just have to keep going. And, thus:
I will reboot the contest tomorrow, hopefully. Onwards...
Sorry to hear about the disappointment, pal. I hope you bounce back to form soon! Chin up and refocus.
The sister's tanks are the bomb man, serious muscle. They are really going to tower over the battlefield. Any tips on building those structures? Not sure how I'm going to mount the exorcist organ on the back of one of my Razorbacks. There isn't much room and it's really heavy.
Thanks all. Case, I used the wall pieces from cod and strengthened with a strip of 0.5mm styrene.
Anyway, let's re-kick-start this thing! I'm going to repost:
The Great Repurposing Contest
Please spread this around on your plogs! Thanks.
--------------
The contest theme:
Repurposing – that is taking a miniature from one system and remodelling, repainting or otherwise repurposing it for another. We all go through phases in our gaming, and often pretty love-hate with GW. The aim is to spur creativity and use what you have lying around to some other, more current purpose.
The rules:
The piece must be recognisably part of the system you are aiming for.
Ties will be broken by the judges (myself and Briancj).
Core model is declared simply to be “for another system” - 0 points
Core model is from the same manufacturer – up to 10 points
Core model is from a different manufacturer – up to 15 points
Basing:
I love a good base. I’m not going to be shy in including that as a criterion. These points ARE cumulative.
Model is based – 0 points
Model is based in a way that repurposes other items – up to 10 points
Model is based in a way that adds narrative – up to 10 points
Modeling:
These points ARE cumulative. A focus on techniques and designs that are easy to copy/emulate will score more points, here. You're helping the masses make terrain. A unique entry might be something that makes the judges go 'ah-ha, that's a GREAT idea'. This is where you can score points for originality of design.
Entry shows a unique idea - 10 points
Entry is visually interesting - 10 points
Entry is visually distinct from the original Core Model- 10 points
Painting:
Points are not cumulative. Minimum three colors. Washes and highlights to qualify as well painted, at a minimum. Amazingly well painted is something that wows the judges. Roughly, painting scores will be as follows
Entry is painted to a basic standard - 10 points
Entry is well painted - 15 points
Entry s well painted and uses unusual techniques - 25
Entry is amazingly well painted - 35 points
-----------
Weight will be given to people who come up with UNIQUE, creative uses for things lying around in bits boxes!
You may not use creations, and as with all League competitions, show your work. Deadline for entries is. 23:59 gmt on October 31st. 2013.
The prizes:
Okay, so in keeping with the theme of the contest, the prize pool is stuff that you could repurpose to other systems. There's 4 to choose from:
Scibor Sci-Fi Knight (Templar #6)
(Although doesn't come with scenic base)
Top 3, and a Rule of Cool prize (to be given to one entry for sheer coolness!). The prizes listed are not in order - first place, first choice, and so on. If there are many many entries I'm going to p provide more prizes.
And the very best of luck to you all!
We've already got some great entries started by Llamahead, ryanroberts and Viktor von Domm. Let's do this!
No idea what I'm entering but I'll get my thinking cap on and make a post about it as soon as I have something. I think I'll do something small and give it some real TLC.
Edit:
Came up with a shortlist of bits and miniatures which I'll submit as my first WIP below.
Before I make the final call and start though I have a couple of quick questions:
What if the miniature is not attached to or meant to be part of a game system?
Can we do more than one miniature? And if so, can they be on separate bases?
@ Casey: as long as it moves clearly away from a particular game or clearly towards a game, that's the main thing. That's a mighty fine collection of bits there, too.
@s_l: thanks man! Really need to get some paint on them though.
Some great repurposing thus far - let's see even more folks!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Hmm, half of post got chopped?!
@panda - c'mon, you know you want to @ gits - hurrah! This I gotta see!
@ Vik thankyou kind sir

Gotcha! Necromunda it is then, I'm going to do a Hired Gun and see how long it takes, if I'm quick I'll do a few of them.
Repurposing: Core Model. These points are not cumulative; imaginative use of bits from a range of manufacturers (or just random stuff) will count in your favour.
Core model is declared simply to be “for another system” - 0 points
and...
Model is based in a way that repurposes other items – up to 10 points
And the problem with the following is that it discourages me from actually showing what I plan to do because if someone else sees it as a fun idea & wants to try something similar (and I'm suggesting no malice here), suddenly neither one of us gets the points for it being unique.
Right, I can answer these:
Core model is declared simply to be “for another system” - 0 points
>Simply saying, yes, it may look like a Dark Eldar but it's a Drow, honest.
I really don't think anyone would do this!
Model is based in a way that repurposes other items – up to 10 points
>Up to 10 additional points for basing the model using bits from another system(s)
>Entry shows a unique idea - 10 points
It's simply that if you think of an original or unusual use for something. I wouldn't expect someone to copy you directly, but if they adapted your idea, you'd get full credit and theirs would depend on how they went about it.
That help? Feel more encouraged? I want this to be inclusive, not exclusive, so if you feel the rules could/should be modified/clarified, please do say!
I'm now busy tinkering with that nelf to bring it up to standards with my latest works, but I suddenly realised, that one thing mirth be a problem - I'm entering this model as a studio work, as it'll be painted by Ish and to help spread the word about our studio a bit. If that's a problem you may just count it as unpainted =/
So, really looking forward to seeing what folk have come up with? Bit quiet round here, are folk getting contest burn-out?
I had a massive fight with the wife today about the amount of unholy, unbuilt, unpainted stuff, and indeed the painted on shelves. Anyone else been through this? We are tight for space but this is my sanity/release. I'm not getting much gaming done either - which turns into a self-fulfilling prophecy, because then why do I need all this stuff?
Well, my wife allowed me more than possibly I am actually deserving, but she always brags around to make me finish my projects. But often starting new stuff has its meteors for me too...which she doesn't get at all... And storage or better the chaos in the living room is of capital interest to her...and often yelling because of said status..
I know your position...
I sort of have that issue I love to paint but dont have much time to play and have a ton of stuff and not much room, so I've started painting stuff up and selling my older stuff on ebay to fund new projects.
Has been working well so far, although it is a bid sad seeing it go.
My entry is underway, promise! Need to go get more glue though, I'll take pictures when I've done something substantial. The bases are giving me nightmares, I want them to be usable in games and match the rest of my 'munda so it's a struggle to make them interesting enough.
I have a unattached workshop 18x36 thats full of all my various hobbies (minis, power tools, armor, fridge ect) attached to a 3 car garage unattatched to the house. I have wall of kits, thou probbly not as much as WM. Wife makes her own money. As long as we pay the bills and save for the future. We buy what we want. (were also older professionals without kids)
Lastly when my wife mentions the number of minis, I mention her room of fabric ( she a costume designer for the Theater) We both smile and move on. Life is good!
Thanks for listening to me moan chaps. Things are marginally better, and I am using this as an excuse get on with painting. We've decided to BOTH have a bit of declutter so that's at least fair.
Meantime - dodgy phone pics notwithstanding - some blocking in turquoise:
And seraphim with wings and redone bases. Yes the pic is blurry, sue me, it's to illustrate poses
As I say lads I really appreciate the support from fellow old marrieds and bachelors alike!
The tanks are looking foxy mate, great work so far.
And decluttering sounds to me like an excuse to buy cool storage to hide stuff in. I take no responsibility for the marital blitzkrieg that would follow that course of action...
Beautiful stuff. My you have been busy while I was away. I hope the Sisters get some love. I hear that they may be a year away. At least they are not getting Squatted...

I will be watching again. Love the vehicles.
Sisters getting some loving ah yeah! I also saw the faeit rumour out of GD Germany to that effect, and had it in-no-way-confirmed from some staffers I seem to be getting some more sisters too, from another mate who's having a forcible woman clearout. May include 5 seraphim, 5 sob and 2 immolators...
Dr H wrote:Good work Graven, they look really good.
Thanks mate!
Casey's Law wrote:Top job! Loving the high contrast on the robes, I might just have to try that!
Cheers, funnily enough I've been doing high contest robes for ever, it turns out - as part of the clearing I found helldorado minis that were early efforts, and in that style.
Giant clearing indeed:
Making room:
Because And this is just GK - no =][= or anything :
Yes blurry, it's about a sense of scale
And in other news, you've got 3 weeks left in this contest - get a move on you lot Cheers,
Graven
So clearly, whilst getting distracted, I should NOT be making new stuff I'm not a big fan of penitent engines, they're rubbish - so by the time the new Codex comes around next year they'll be must-have-unstoppable-beardy-nerf machines, and twice the price.
I must have enough bits to build one or two, right? Reckon so Obviously much cabling and filling to be done.
Casey's Law wrote:Pretty! You think SOB will be getting some lovely plastic kits for 2014?
Anything for a bit of variety in poses Basic SoBs would be great eh?
Viktor von Domm wrote:Yup...still nothing here... I suppose it must be stuck at customs... Or lost in the warp...
Those arms...a bit too blocky looking for sister tech?
Bother. That is annoying. As for the arms, well, the use of dread parts stemmed from thinking about Karamazov, and I really hate the giant flailing arms of the normal one. Still, the dread shoulders are bit chunky, could maybe be balanced by a shoulder pad affair on the other arm
inmygravenimage wrote: ... And then I see a rumour on BoLS today that the digi codex for SoB is coming out asap!
Just read the same... If only they released some plastic kits... I'd be all for it !!!
And yours are an inspiration too !! Not too sold on the discrepancy between the thin, Sentinel legs, and the stocky Dread shoulders, but hey... They'll look great when painted !
Painted no, you've lost me, sorry Anyway.
after some consideration I've removed the flamer:
Hopefully you can also see how it's starting to evolve generally. Of course, I'll need another sentinel to make a squad of 3 And the question becomes how to tackle the 2 flamers. SoB twin link, mounted on shoulder perhaps?
Damn, only 3 weeks left! That should be plenty of time to get my entry painted (at least the build is complete!) but I keep getting distracted- re-building and panting my IG, repairing a friends 4000 points worth of Space Wolves (he had them in a cardboard box and put a heavier box on top) and painting a gorgeous Battlestar Galactica kit, besides work and decorating a house!
I can do this, I can do this, I can....
